The Cougars return 36 letterwinners including 17 on offense, 16 on defense and three on special teams. The group includes eight offensive linemen including all five starters and two, in Cam'Ron Johnson and Patrick Paul, who were 2022 First-Team All-Conference honorees. The group will be tutored by first-year Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach Eman Naghavi who joined the Cougars in January following a decorated season in the same position at Tulane. After missing the entire 2022 season due to injury, Houston welcomes back running back Alton McCaskill IV who set the program's true freshman rushing touchdowns record in 2021. He is accompanied by wideout Matthew Golden who broke UH's all-time receiving touchdowns record among true freshman a season ago. - Houston Football

The Cougars' offense will look different this season with the graduation of Tune and early departure of Dell to the NFL draft. UH signed former Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith from the transfer portal, added several receivers, among them four-star signee Mikal Harrison-Pilot, and will welcome back star running back Alton McCaskill from a knee injury that sidelined him last season. - Houston Chronicle

University of Houston running back Alton McCaskill is doubtful to play this season after suffering a torn knee ligament in spring practice, coach Dana Holgorsen said Thursday. Speaking during the American Athletic Conference's media day, Holgorsen said McCaskill was recently cleared to begin running, but said it was premature to put any timetable on a possible return. "That conversation won't even be had for months and months," Holgorsen said. "Just being smart about it, I doubt it." McCaskill tore the ACL in his left knee during the final week of spring practice. He underwent successful surgery in April. "That's not my call," Holgorsen continued when asked about a timetable for McCaskill's return. "If I wanted that to happen and the doctors say no, then the doctors are going to win out for sure. We're interested in what's best for Alton and his future." McCaskill had 961 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns as a freshman last season to earn AAC's Rookie of the Year. - Houston Chronicle

The Cougars will be without McCaskill for most, if not all, of the season after he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee late in the spring. McCaskill had a sensational freshman season, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns to earn AAC Rookie of the Year. He made an impact from the start and became the type of every-down back that has been in short supply at UH.

There is no timetable for his return, but it's clear the Cougars will not have one of their top offensive weapons for an extended period in what is likely the school's final year in the AAC before a move to the Big 12. "Can he get back to the point he can play in a couple of games?" coach Dana Holgorsen said. "That's not my decision, either. That's medical decisions. If that happens, great. If not, we'll get him ready for spring (2023)." Not only was McCaskill so valuable as a workhorse (team-high 189 carries), but he also was a threat to catch passes out of the backfield (21 receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns). McCaskill, one of the top-rated signees in school history, lived up to the hype with his 16 rushing touchdowns a freshman record and the second-most by any UH player in a single season, behind quarterback Greg Ward Jr.'s 21 in 2015. "I'm here to be legendary and break records," McCaskill said during his first year. - Houston Chronicle

Alton McCaskill rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as No. 17 Houston methodically dispatched Temple 37-8 on Saturday to clinch a berth in the American Athletic Conference championship game. The Cougars (9-1, 7-0 American Athletic) have won nine straight games since an opening loss to Texas Tech to secure their first appearance in the conference championship game since winning the American Athletic in 2015. They will likely face No. 2 Cincinnati, which has to win one of its remaining two games - at home against SMU next Saturday and at East Carolina on Nov. 26, to join them in the Dec. 4 championship game. "Make no mistake, I'm proud of where we are at," Houston coach Dana Holgorsen said. "That's a goal before the season started. We wanted to be in the title game and we are. But it doesn't change what our job is next week (in the home finale against Memphis) or in two weeks (at UConn in the regular season finale)." Temple (3-7, 1-5) has lost five straight games, outscored 217-35 in that stretch. "Our defense, I thought played well enough to win," Temple coach Rod Carey said. "Our offense put us in some bad positions today." The Houston defense, which had been blistered for 79 points in back-to-back wins over SMU and USF, got interceptions from cornerback Marcus Jones, safety Gervarrius Owens, and Gleson Sprewell while holding the Temple offense to just 10 first downs and 48 total plays in the game. - Houston/AP College Football

The game, which was originally set to begin at 3 p.m. Central, was delayed 20 minutes due to lightning. At 3:20 p.m., it was delayed after a brief start and didn't resume until five hours later. It ended close to midnight in Houston. It finally ended when JoVanni Stewart recovered Ryan Jones' fumble which was initiated on a tackle by Donavan Mutin after Jones took a short pass from Holton Ahlers. Down 24-10, Ahlers ran it in from the 1 with 6:59 left in regulation before the Cougars (6-1, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) turned it over on their first play from scrimmage on the following drive. Inheriting a short field, Ahlers threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Audie Omotosho with 5:43 left to force overtime. Ahlers threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns for ECU (3-4, 1-2). Clayton Tune threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns for Houston. - AP College Football
