Seven Michigan State football players are charged in the postgame melee in Michigan Stadium's tunnel last month, according to a statement Wednesday from the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office. The most serious charge is against cornerback Khary Crump, who faces a felony count of felonious assault. The charges against the six others are misdemeanors. Linebacker Itayvion "Tank" Brown, safety Angelo Grose, cornerback Justin White, defensive end Brandon Wright and defensive end Zion Young are each charged with one count of aggravated assault, and linebacker Jacoby Windmon faces one count of assault and battery. The charges come ahead of the final regular-season games: No. 3 Michigan plays rival No. 2 Ohio State on the road Saturday a few hours before the Spartans close it out at No. 11 Penn State, and needing a win to become bowl eligible.

Scuffles broke out in the Michigan Stadium tunnel on Oct. 29 after the then-No. 4 Wolverines beat the Spartans 29-7. Social media posts showed Michigan State players pushing, punching and kicking Michigan’s Ja’Den McBurrows in and near a hallway that doesn’t lead to either locker room. Brown, Grose and Young are seen on video getting physical with McBurrows. McBurrows and defensive back Gemon Green went up the tunnel, walking alongside the Spartans, after the game while much of Michigan’s team was waving them off the field after beating their in-state rivals for the first time in three years. Green, in another post, is surrounded by police while shouting across the tunnel at Michigan State players. - AP College Football

  11/14/22 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

West Virginia fired athletic director Shane Lyons on Monday, a move that comes amid the worst stretch for the football team in more than four decades. President Gordon Gee said there were no immediate plans to make changes under coach Neal Brown. Lyons is gone after nearly eight years. Gee said in a statement that Rob Alsop, WVU's vice president for strategic initiatives, has been named interim athletic director while a search is ongoing for Lyons' replacement. Brown has a 21-24 record in his fourth season, including 4-6 this year. It's the worst stretch since the football team went 17-27 under Frank Cignetti from 1976-79.

In September, after West Virginia started the football season 0-2 and fans turned up their criticism of Brown, Lyons said he would take a wait-and-see approach for the remainder of the season. Fans also had criticized Lyons' move to give Brown a contract extension following a 6-4 record in 2020, his only winning season. "We are supporting coach Neal Brown and our team as we complete our season over the next few weeks," Gee said in a statement. "We are aware there are some deficiencies, but we have not given up on the coach and the team, and they have not given up on each other. "The evaluation of the football program will be the first task of our new athletic director and no changes will be made until that review has been completed." Lyons was hired in January 2015 to succeed Oliver Luck. He previously served as deputy athletic director at Alabama and as associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. - AP College Football

Michigan State has suspended four players for their role in roughing up Michigan players in a stadium tunnel after losing a game. Spartans coach Mel Tucker announced Sunday night that linebacker Tank Brown, safety Angelo Grose, defensive end Zion Young and cornerback Khary Crump were suspended immediately. "Michigan State University football core values include integrity, discipline, unselfishness, toughness and accountability," said Tucker, who made the decision after "reviewing the disturbing electronic evidence." Scuffles broke out in the Michigan Stadium tunnel after fourth-ranked Wolverines beat the Spartans 29-7 Saturday night. Social media posts showed at Michigan State players pushing, punching and kicking Michigan's Ja'Den McBurrows in and near a hallway that doesn't lead to either locker room. Brown, Grose and Young are seen on video getting physical with McBurrows.

McBurrows and defensive back Gemon Green went up the tunnel, walking alongside the Spartans, after the game while much of Michigan's team was waving them off the field after beating their in-state rivals for the first time in three years. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Saturday night that one of the players, who he did not identify, might have a broken nose. A social media post on Sunday showed a Wolverine, who appears to be Green, getting roughed up by Spartans. Green, in another post, is surrounded by police while shouting across the tunnel at Michigan State players. "Two of our players were assaulted," Harbaugh said. "I saw on the one video. 10 on one. It was pretty bad. It needs to be investigated." - AP College Football

  10/02/22 - Ari BroussardrSr/2024, Rice, 5-11, 222 (DS#21 FB) + More +

Ari Broussard ran for two touchdowns, Treshawn Chamberlain scored on a fumble return and Rice beat UAB 28-24 Saturday night. Broussard scored from the 1 in the first quarter and from the 3 with 8:01 left in the third quarter before Chamberlain's return gave Rice (3-2, 1-0 Conference USA) a 21-17 lead 18 seconds later. Dylan Hopkins threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Trea Shropshire to cap UAB's ensuing possession but the Owls responded with a 14-play, 82-yard drive that took 8 1/2 minutes off the clock and culminated when TJ McMahon threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Dean Connors to cap the scoring with 9:02 left in the game.

DeWayne McBride ran for 23 yards to near midfield on the next play from scrimmage and had a 4-yard run on third-and-2 before Hopkins hit Shropshire on third-and-8 for a 13-yard gain and a personal foul by Rice's Josh Pearcy gave the Blazers a first-and-10 at the 11. Ikenna Enechukwu tackled McBride for a 4-yard loss before Hopkins threw three consecutive incomplete passes - all intended for Shropshire - and Rice took possession at the 15. Hopkins was 15-of-21 passing for 231 yards and two touchdowns with an interception and McBride finished with 121 yards rushing on 27 carries for UAB (2-2, 0-1). - Rice/AP College Football

  09/22/22 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

J.T. Daniels threw for 203 yards and a touchdown to lead West Virginia to a 33-10 win over Virginia Tech on Thursday night. Freshman CJ Donaldson rushed for 106 yards and West Virginia (2-2) got a strong performance from its defense to win its second straight game after losing the first two. The Mountaineers, who beat Virginia Tech for the second consecutive season, scored on five straight possessions spanning the first and second half. Daniels’ 24-yard touchdown pass to Sam James with 11 seconds left in the first half gave the Mountaineers a 13-7 lead, and they never trailed again.

The Hokies (2-2) closed within 16-10 on a field goal by Will Ross with 4:19 left in the third quarter. West Virginia answered, scoring on a 6-yard run by Justin Johnson Jr. with 14:13 left in the game. The Hokies had West Virginia stopped twice on the drive, but personal foul penalties on Norell Pollard and Dax Hollifield kept the drive alive. Penalties hindered the Hokies all night. They committed 15 for 132 yards. - West Virginia/AP College Football

Luke McCaffrey is a dynamic playmaker with good hands that Bloomgren foresees being a vital part of the offense. A former quarterback at Nebraska who started three games at the position for Rice in 2021, McCaffrey made the switch to receiver in the spring by choice. A 4.9-second runner over 40 yards, McCaffrey is a viable option at receiver, along with Bradley Rozner, who missed most of the past two seasons, Cedric Patterson, and Tulsa transfer Sam Crawford. Last year's starters Jake Bailey and August PItre transferred out. - Houston Chronicle

2022 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST: JT Daniels, West Virginia,... WVU transfer quarterback JT Daniels (6-3, 21) has quickly acclimated to the Mountaineers' offensive system, coordinated by Graham Harrell. With proven productive stints at both USC and Georgia on his resume, there's not much Daniels hasn't seen from opposing defenses, and getting used to Harrell's version of the Air Raid (a bit different, but not far removed from the classic version popularized by the Hal Mumme-Mike Leach coaching tree) hasn't been a big change. "I learned so much from all the offensive coordinators and coaches I have had, and I have been able to transition back and forth from an NFL style to an Air Raid style a couple of times over my career," added Daniels. "I've been able to process all of those changes." - West Virginia Football

  06/18/22 - Clay ServinrSr/2024, Rice, 6-5, 309 (DS#78 OG) + More +

Nearly eight months after accepting an invitation to join the American Athletic Conference, Rice on Wednesday announced it has finalized an agreement to officially enter the league in 2023. Rice - along with UTSA, North Texas, UAB, Florida Atlantic and Charlotte - will jump from Conference USA to the AAC on July 1, 2023. Rice athletic director Joe Karlgaard said the announcement "brings Rice athletics a step closer to its very bright future." Left out of the Big 12 following the breakup of the Southwest Conference in the mid-1990s, Rice spent eight years in the Western Athletic Conference and eventually joined C-USA in 2005.

The AAC's agreements with the six new schools - which were spread out over the last five days - ends the latest round of conference realignment that began last summer with Texas and Oklahoma accepting invitations to join the Southeastern Conference. That set off a wave of moves, with the Big 12 adding the University of Houston, Cincinnati and Central Florida from the AAC and independent BYU, and the AAC quickly adding six C-USA schools to form a 14-team football league. On Friday, the AAC said it reached agreements on $18 million exit fees with its three departing schools - who will join the Big 12 on the same date - to pave the way for Rice to finally set a concrete date to join its new league. - Houston Chronicle

  06/16/22 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

As might be expected from a veteran quarterback, WVU transfer J.T. Daniels has quickly acclimated to the Mountaineers' offensive system, coordinated by Graham Harrell. Of course, Daniels played for Harrell at USC, so even the few tweaks installed by the now-WVU offensive coordinator haven't been hard to pick up, even as they morph to take advantage of West Virginia's improving stable of running backs.

Also, there's Daniels' history of learning entirely new offensive systems, which has become such a strength that he lists "processing," as his top ability as a quarterback. "I played in an NFL style in high school and in my first year at USC, then it was the Air Raid (under Harrell). Then at Georgia it was more NFL, so I have played in both and moved back and forth. I pride myself on having a high football IQ, and I've always been heavily involved in every aspect of the offense. "I learned so much from all the offensive coordinators and coaches I have had, and I have been able to transition back and forth from an NFL style to an Air Raid style a couple of times over my career," added Daniels. "I've been able to process all of those changes." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

  05/06/22 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

WVU officially adds Georgia quarterback transfer JT Daniels: WVU coach Neal Brown announced JT Daniels, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound redshirt senior quarterback from Irvine, Calif., signed a grant-in-aid and will transfer to WVU from Georgia. Though he is listed as a senior, Daniels has two years of eligibility remaining due to the free COVID year granted by the NCAA. Daniels is a former 5-star prospect, reuniting with Graham Harrell, who served as his offensive coordinator at USC in 2019. Harrell now holds the same position with the Mountaineers. Injuries have derailed Daniels' time at his previous two stops.

After being named the starting QB at USC in 2018, where he started 11 games as a true freshman, an ACL injury the following season forced him to the bench. Kedon Slovis, who is now projected to be the starter at Pitt, took over and played well, forcing Daniels to hit the transfer portal. Daniels and Slovis could meet head-to-head Sept. 1 when the Backyard Brawl resumes at Heinz Field. Daniels, at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, transferred to Georgia, but his recovery caused him to miss the early part of the 2020 season, but he did start the final four games, including a Peach Bowl victory over Cincinnati. - Dominion Post
