  12/11/20 - Shaka ToneyrSr/2021, Penn State, 6-3, 242 (DS#8 DE) + More +

By any measure, the Penn State football team's season has been a disappointment. At 2-5, there is no other way to label a program that had aspirations of being a contender for the national title before the campaign opened. But leave it to defensive end Shaka Toney, ever an eternal optimist, to see the positives in losing far more than winning. "Losing isn't fun, and I've never lost this many games in my career on any team," Toney said during a video conference with media on Tuesday. "Now, I've just learned how to handle it. I learned how I can get better from it and what I can do to help to get out of losing. It was all a lesson. It ain't the end of the world. … You've just got to maximize your opportunities when things don't always go as planned. You've got to learn situations and maximize situations when they don't got the best way.

"I just feel like it was a big learning year. There's a lot of things you can just take away this year that hopefully you worked on in yourself." Presumably, there is little refinement for Toney's affable, enthusiastic nature. Even with the guarantee that Penn State will have with a losing regular season for the first time since 2004, Toney preached the importance of completing the task at hand. "You don't win every marathon you run," Toney said. "You don't win every race. But if you finish, that's what means the most because now, you can get up and learn. Whereas if you quit and you just lay down and keep letting people walk all over you, you ain't learning nothing. You're not getting better. You're taking no lesson from the loss. All you're learning is that I can quit when stuff gets tough. "You always want to see things through. That's all we preach is to finish strong. It ain't always how you start. It's about how you finish." - Tribune Review

  12/05/20 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Sean Clifford threw a 29-yard touchdown and Penn State's defense set up three scores with stops or takeaways on Saturday as the Nittany Lions played their best game of the season with a 23-7 victory over Rutgers. Penn State (2-5, 2-5 Big Ten) dominated both sides of the ball, outgained Rutgers 381-204 and held the Scarlet Knights to a season-low for points, more than three touchdowns below their average. The win was the second straight for the Nittany Lions and their 14th in a row over the Scarlet Knights (2-5, 2-5). Clifford opened the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Parker Washington with 3:32 left in the first quarter. It came after the Nittany Lions stuffed Johnny Langan on a fourth-and-1 from the Rutgers 45 on the Scarlet Knights' opening possession.

After a 30-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar extended the lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter, Penn State stopped Rutgers on another fourth-and-1 from its 45, this time on an incomplete pass by Langan. Devyn Ford capped the short drive with a 7-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 lead. Jordan Stout added a 47-yard field goal early in the third quarter after Rutgers quarterback Noah Vedral fumbled on the second play of the half. Vedral threw a 3-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass to Bo Melton with 4:56 left in the third quarter. An interception by safety Christian Izien at the Nittany Lions 36 set up the score. Pinegar added a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. - Penn State/AP College Football

  12/02/20 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford is a pretty deep thinker when it comes to his position. But he doesn't necessarily ruminate over the X's and O's of being a signal caller. He's much more profound about it. "One (term) that I've heard used before is your 'flow state,' " Clifford said during a video conference with media Saturday. "I'm actually minoring in psychology, and one thing that we've talked about is when an athlete or anybody really gets in their state of flow. It's definitely a game-changer, and it's fun when you get into that state and you can just kind of play loose. "I feel like I personally haven't been in that. Last year, I was. After a couple of losses this year, I feel like it's been tough to find that, but (Saturday), I just kind of let loose and had fun with my teammates. I felt like I was back to the Sean that I used to be."

On Saturday, Clifford directed his team to its first victory of a disappointing season, 27-17 at Michigan. Clifford made most of his impact on the ground, rushing for 73 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. He also had 163 yards passing with 17 completions on 28 attempts. It wasn't necessarily the biggest win of Clifford's career, which has included victories in two of three bowl games. But it was certainly significant given Penn State's struggles this season. - Tribune Review

  11/29/20 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

After being benched early in the second quarter of Penn State's Week 4 loss to Nebraska and then not getting the start against Iowa last week, Clifford was back as the starter Saturday against Michigan. And he played well through most of the contest. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Ohio native made smart decisions with the football - not turning the ball over in a game for the first time all season. He especially looked good using his legs. With 3:32 left in the first half, Clifford rolled left and looked downfield before taking off and beating a couple Michigan defensive backs on his way to the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown run that put Penn State up 14-7. - Centre Times

  11/29/20 - Jahan DotsonSr/2022, Penn State, 5-11, 181 (DS#6 WR) + More +

The Nittany Lions came into this season with a huge question mark at wide receiver and plenty of mystery surrounding the position. Through six games, those questions have been answered at the team's talent is no longer a conundrum. Penn State is set at wide receiver for a few seasons thanks to several key weapons on the outside. Junior Jahan Dotson has shown all season that he can be a top talent at the position, but Saturday afternoon it was a true freshman who stepped up. Parker Washington finished the game with a career high 93 receiving yards on nine receptions to set the pace. Those two - if Dotson doesn't enter the NFL Draft - have plenty of talent to carry the position into the future. - Centre Times

Sean Clifford threw for 163 yards and scored one of Penn State's three rushing touchdowns, and the Nittany Lions finally broke their winless skid to start the season, beating Michigan 27-17 on Saturday. Keyvone Lee and Will Levis also ran for TDs, and Penn State (1-5, 1-5 Big Ten) never trailed in this matchup of proud programs that have struggled mightily in this pandemic-shortened season. Hassan Haskins ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns for Michigan, but the Wolverines (2-4, 2-4) never found much of a consistent rhythm offensively. It was the 899th victory for the Penn State program, and the Nittany Lions had to wait a while for this one. This was the first time they'd started a season 0-5, but three impressive touchdown drives were enough to hold off Michigan. Penn State led 20-17 in the fourth quarter before a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard scoring run by Levis.

Cade McNamara, who came off the bench to guide Michigan to an overtime win at Rutgers last weekend, was off target for much of this game. He went 12 of 25 for 91 yards. Penn State marched 75 yards in 10 plays on the game's first drive, taking a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard run by Lee. That was about as smooth as it got for either offense, however. Haskins broke free for a 59-yard run later in the first quarter, and he eventually scored from 2 yards out to tie the game. Clifford was shaken up briefly in the first half, but after returning to the game he broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run to put the Nittany Lions back on top. A muffed punt gave Penn State a field goal just before halftime. Michigan closed within three when Haskins scored on a 2-yard run with 13:12 remaining, but the Wolverines couldn't keep Penn State out of the end zone on the ensuing drive. - Penn State/AP College Football
