  08/11/22 - *Joey Porter Jr.Jr/2023, Penn State, 6-3, 198 (DS#3 CB) + More +

Penn State hasn't had many cornerbacks like Joey Porter Jr. Few possess his raw talent. Even fewer are built like him. Porter is already a 2023 first-round projection in several mock drafts. The North Allegheny grad, the son of Pittsburgh Steelers great Joey Porter, was a third-team All-Big Ten pick by the conference's coaches last season. But there were a couple of issues with penalties in 2021, and Porter's overall play sometimes gets overlooked as a result. Still, Penn State veteran cornerbacks coach Terry Smith knows what he has in the 198-pound Porter, who is entering his fourth season with the Nittany Lions.

From a physical standpoint, Smith said there is only one former Lion - a good one - who is comparable to Porters: Amani Oruwariye, one of the top young corners in the NFL. He was a first-team All-Big Ten choice in 2018. "Amani's having such a great career with the Detroit Lions," Smith said. "Amani's built similar to (Porter). Amani probably has a lot of what Joey has, (but) Joey has more speed. Amani wasn't as fast, but those two guys are probably the most comparable in my mind, of guys I've coached because of their length. "Joey's kind of exceptional with his speed, athleticism, that combination he has. He's 6-3. His arms are 35 inches. That's the longest on the team - D-ends, O-linemen, everyone. And so you put that out on the perimeter, it's tough on receivers to get separation. We're excited about him." - Tribune Review

  08/10/22 - *Parker WashingtonrSo/2023, Penn State, 5-10, 204 (DS#20 WR) + More +

Penn State is in desperate need of production at wide receiver with Jahan Dotson's departure for the NFL. The common line of thinking is that there will be a by-committee approach to make up for the lost receptions and yardage. However, there's a breakout candidate on the roster who has already proven what he's capable of in some of Penn State's biggest games last season. Wide receiver Parker Washington is dynamic with the ball in his hands and that's going to be the hardest part of Dotson's game to replace.

The sophomore has the lower body strength to run through tacklers but can make opponents miss with relative ease when he has space. Not to mention, he had nine catches for 108 yards against Ohio State with Dotson on the field and then seven catches for 98 yards against Arkansas without him. Washington is unlikely to be as good as his predecessor, but he still has a golden opportunity to be the most valuable piece of the offense in 2022. - Centre Times

  08/10/22 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Predicting a Penn State MVP for 2022. Let's not overthink this. It's been a decade since a Penn State back not named Saquon Barkley or Miles Sanders has reached the 1,000-yard milestone, and the passing offenses of coordinator Mike Yurcich have historically spread the ball around. By process of elimination, unless OL legend Steve Wisniewski finds a time machine, that leaves sixth-year quarterback Sean Clifford. Clifford might not finish as an all-conference selection, but he should complete about 60% of his passes while throwing for at least twice as many touchdowns as interceptions. That should be good enough for MVP honors in an offense that likely won't feature many statistical standouts. - Centre Times

  08/08/22 - Julian FlemingrSr/2025, Penn State, 6-2, 208 (DS#82 WR) + More +

Julian Fleming enters his third season with Ohio State football still endeavoring to display the talent that once made him a highly coveted prospect. According to coach Ryan Day, the junior from Pennsylvania took an important step over the summer. Strength coach Mickey Marotti's champion tiers for offseason workouts are gold, red and blue. Yet above gold, a select group can also attain "Iron Buckeye" status. That's not a list the staff releases, but it's notable when Ryan Day attaches that designation to anyone. After Thursday's first practice, Day said Fleming achieved an Iron Buckeye summer.

The former five-star prospect and No. 1-ranked receiver in the 2020 class, slowed by injuries and blocked from a bigger role by stars now departed to the NFL, may finally be synching health with opportunity. "Julian Fleming had the best offseason he's had to this point," Day said. The potential ramifications for the offense are immense. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson were both selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Jaxon Smith-Njigba returns from a record-setting season in the slot. Sophomore Marvin Harrison Jr. is the leading candidate for the X receiver as a bigger-bodied red zone threat. Fleming, though, could be the Z answer that takes the top off defenses as Olave once did. He totaled 86 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions last season. To this point, some of his bigger playmaking opportunities have come on special teams, or when running down a defender after an interception and forcing a fumble. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  08/01/22 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Heading into his fourth season as Penn State's starting quarterback, Sean Clifford (6-2, 212) is the focus of media attention because of his involvement with the College Football Players Association, which is a hot-button issue. He was besieged by reporters and cameras at media day and asked about the new association. "I'm going to stick to football questions," Clifford said. "But I appreciate the question." Clifford also launched his own Name, Image and Likeness agency this offseason and is the CEO of Limitless NIL. "I see myself as a leader in the locker room first and foremost, there for every single student-athlete that comes in contact with me," Clifford said. "Because I want to make sure I'm there for them the same way great leaders were there for me early. Trace McSorley being one of them; Saquon Barkley, Mike Gesicki, Chris Godwin … all those guys who were in the locker room before me." - Inquirer.com

  07/30/22 - PJ MustipherrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-4, 320 (DS#28 DT) + More +

Veteran defensive lineman PJ Mustipher, now in his fifth year, had his 2021 season cut short due to a serious leg injury in the Lions' sixth game, a narrow loss at Iowa. Still, Mustipher was a second-team All-Big Ten choice, a good indicator of just how well PJ played in the middle of the Lions' defense. "A lot of people talk about the game of football," Franklin said. "You want to be strong up the middle, very similar to baseball and having a nose guard like PJ Mustipher to set the tone is really, really important. He's back and excited and ready to go." Franklin added of Mustipher: "He's in great spirits. He feels both mentally and physically 100% back because I think that's a big part of this, right? As well as not just the physical aspect of it, it's the mental aspect of it as well." - Tribune Review
