A week after becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2013, Oregon State remains in contention for the Pac-12 North Division title following a 24-10 victory Saturday night over Arizona State. A program coming off a 1-11 season before Jonathan Smith took over as head coach at his alma mater in 2018, the Beavers (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12) have come a long way. Jack Colletto ignited a stagnant Oregon State offense by running 47 yards for a touchdown on fourth-and-2 from the Wildcat formation, giving the Beavers a 24-10 lead with 11:24 remaining. "I was thinking touchdown all the way," Colletto said with a smile. "Adrenaline kicked in on that one." It was the eighth rushing touchdown of the season for Colletto, a former quarterback converted to linebacker in 2019. B.J. Baylor led Oregon State's offense with 150 yards rushing.

The Beavers were in jeopardy of squandering a 17-0 halftime lead. Punter Luke Loecher mishandled a snap deep in Oregon State territory in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and the Sun Devils recovered at the 4. That set up a DeaMonte Trayanum's 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to 17-10 with 13:56 remaining. Baylor's 20-yard run on the ensuing possession gave the Beavers a spark, and Colletto's touchdown run proved decisive. If Washington defeats Washington State (6-5, 5-3) at home Friday, and Oregon State wins at Oregon (9-2, 6-2) the following day, the Beavers would play Utah in the Pac-12 championship game Dec. 3 in Las Vegas. Oregon controls its own destiny and would win the North Division with a win over the Beavers. In a three-way tie between Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State, the Cougars would get the nod in a tiebreaker. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Oregon State took a pretty good shot from Utah in the first eight minutes but the Beavers never wavered and responded with an all-around performance that put them a win away from a bowl berth. Luke Musgrave blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown, B.J. Baylor rushed for over 100 yards and a score, and Oregon State rallied from an early deficit to defeat Utah 42-34 on Saturday night. The Beavers (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12), who trailed 24-14 at the half, scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of the second half to take control.

One more win and the Beavers will be bowl eligible for the first time since the 2013 season. "What's in front of us is bigger than going to a bowl game," fourth-year coach Jonathan Smith said. "And so the mantra is you try to win a game to make the next game bigger and that's what we did." Oregon State, the conference leader in rushing yards per game, rushed for 260 yards with Baylor, who entered averaging 112.8 yards per game, leading the way with 152. Quarterback Chance Nolan was 14-for-19 passing for 208 yards and two touchdowns with Trevon Bradford catching six passes for 74 yards and a score. Bradford also had two carries for 20 yards and a touchdown. Utah entered the game allowing just 128.3 on the ground. - Oregon State/AP College Football

B.J. Baylor had 20 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns, Everett Hayes kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired and Oregon State beat Washington 27-24 on Saturday night. It's still relatively early in the season, but Oregon State's win combined with Stanford's upset of No. 3 Oregon in overtime puts the Beavers (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) in first place. Oregon State snapped a nine-game losing streak to Washington (2-3, 1-1 Pac-12) and is 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 2013. Oregon State rallied for its fourth consecutive win after losing the lead in the fourth quarter.

A strip-sack of Oregon State quarterback Chance Nolan by Faatui Tuitele at the OSU 13 and fellow defensive lineman Sam Taimani's recovery and 13-yard run set up Sean McGrew's 6-yard touchdown run, giving Washington the lead at 24-17 with 10:02 left. Back came the Beavers. A 19-yard run on a reverse to wide receiver Anthony Gould, followed by Gould's 22-yard reception set up Baylor's 27-yard run to tie the game at 24-24 with 6:35 remaining. McGrew was stopped inches short of a first down on a fourth-and-1 direct snap run near midfield at the 3:18 mark. The spot was upheld on an official's review. McGrew's 39-yard touchdown run up the middle tied the game at 17-17 with 10:19 remaining. Dylan Morris' 18-yard pass to Kamari Pleasant on third and 18 deep in Huskies territory kept the drive alive. Oregon State gained momentum early in the second quarter. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Oregon State will go with sixth-year senior Sam Noyer as its starting quarterback for Saturday's 2021 season opener at Purdue. Noyer, who transferred from Colorado in June, beat out fourth-year sophomore Chance Nolan for the starting berth. Tristan Gebbia, among those battling for the starting berth during the first two weeks of camp, is sidelined with a sore hamstring. Coach Jonathan Smith said the quarterbacks were told of the decision Sunday. "Throughout camp, I thought the whole quarterback room did a good job going back and forth. It was very close," Smith said. "Ultimately getting ready for a game week, felt like the best way to do it was make a decision on Monday so we can have a week of work with the game plan." The 6-foot-4, 227-pound Noyer played five years and 26 games at Colorado. Noyer earned second-team all-conference honors in 2020 after leading the Buffaloes to a 4-2 record. Noyer is a graduate of Beaverton High. "The overall feel throughout the body of work through camp and then headed into a game plan, we just felt like he has the best chance to let us score some points," Smith said of Noyer. - The Oregonian

On the list of wow players during the first five days of Oregon State's preseason football camp, there's no disagreement that tight end Luke Musgrave is an automatic inclusion. The third-year tight end from Bend has been a showstopper in the passing game, and emerging as a blocker. At 6-foot-6, up to 252 pounds with good speed, Musgrave is impossible to miss when the Beavers scrimmage each day. While it might be premature to project Musgrave as the seventh career 1,000-yard tight end at Oregon State, he clearly has that capability. "He's got himself in great shape. He's running really well, and he's carrying good weight," OSU offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren said. "The biggest thing for him is, he's always been really good in the passing game. It's the 50-50 balls with a big body that we're looking to see more of. He's done some of that. "He's going to be a big part of what we do."

Musgrave has been a camp standout with not only contested passes, but making a tough catch. There was a situation Monday when Musgrave went up high to grab a long pass over the middle, knowing he was going to get blasted. He made a fingertip catch, securing the ball as he hit the ground hard. "That one hurt. I still feel that one," Musgrave said. "You just have to accept that it's not going to feel great on the way down, but you'll get the catch, most of the time." - The Oregonian

Oregon State junior defensive end Isaac Hodgins, the team's most veteran player in terms of career starts, had foot surgery Monday and will be sidelined for about two months. Hodgins hurt his foot midway through Saturday's practice. He left the workout on crutches, and didn't attend Monday or Tuesday's practice. Coach Jonathan Smith, who didn't specify which foot, said Hodgins' injury is "longer-term, so give or take eight weeks." Hodgins, brother of Buffalo Bills receiver Isaiah Hodgins and son of former NFL fullback James Hodgins, has started 30 of 31 games at Oregon State. Hodgins started his first game as a true freshman in 2018. He brought a streak of 28 consecutive starts into the 2021 season. The 6-foot, 274-pound Hodgins has 76 tackles, 9 1/2 tackles for loss and five sacks during his career. Hodgins was Pac-12 all-conference honorable mention last season. - The Oregonian
