  Former Arkansas coach Chad Morris is staying in the Southeastern Conference Western Division as Auburn's offensive coordinator. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced the hiring on Tuesday a month after Arkansas fired his longtime friend. Morris failed to win an SEC game in nearly two full seasons with the Razorbacks, but he has an impressive track record as an offensive coordinator. Morris was also SMU's head coach from 2015-17 after four seasons running the offense at Clemson. Like Malzahn, he built a name for himself as a high school coach; Morris in Texas and Malzahn in Arkansas. Morris replaces Kenny Dillingham, who appears set to join Mike Norvell at Florida State after one season. Malzahn resumed calling plays last season but it's not clear who will handle those duties after the hiring of Morris. - AP College Football

  2019 WILLIAM V. CAMPBELL TROPHY AWARD WINNER: College football's most prestigious award honoring both athletic and academic achievement is coming home to Eugene. Oregon senior quarterback Justin Herbert, a Eugene native who led the Ducks to a Pac-12 Championship game win Friday, was awarded the William V. Campbell Trophy on Tuesday by the National Football Foundation and presenting sponsor Mazda. Considered the "academic Heisman," the Campbell Trophy honors academic and athletic success along with leadership and community achievement.

Herbert was named the 30th Campbell Trophy winner Tuesday night at the NFF's Hall of Fame banquet in midtown Manhattan. He and his family were in attendance, and will travel to Atlanta for recognition as the Campbell Trophy winner during Thursday's College Football Awards Show. "It's an incredible honor to be standing here accepting this award, and I'd like to thank the National Football Foundation for hosting such a memorable event," Herbert said upon receiving the trophy. "I am honored to be joining the incredible people who have previously received this award. I will strive to uphold the legacy of every winner of the Campbell Trophy before me." Herbert was the third Campbell Trophy finalist from Oregon, following in the footsteps of fellow quarterbacks Bill Musgrave and Dennis Dixon. He was the second winner who competed in the Pac-12 Conference, after former California offensive lineman Alex Mack. - Oregon Football

In the Pac-12 Championship Game, Thibodeaux posted five tackles, 2.5 sacks and blocked a punt. He ranks second in the Pac-12 in tackles for loss and third in sacks. He's the first Duck to earn the honor since the conference started awarding Freshman Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.   CJ Verdell ran for 208 yards and broke open the game with two long touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, and No. 13 Oregon spoiled No. 5 Utah's playoff hopes with a 37-15 victory in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night. The Utes (11-2, No. 5 CFP) came into the game hoping to make a case for one of the four playoff spots with a conference title but instead got overmatched by Oregon (11-2, No. 13 CFP) and lost their second straight Pac-12 championship game. They fell into a 20-0 hole in the first half and then gave up a 70-yard TD run to Verdell after cutting the deficit to 23-15, paving the way for the winner of the Big 12 title game between Oklahoma and Baylor to get into the playoff as long as No. 1 LSU beats No. 4 Georgia for the SEC championship.

The Utes got back onto the game with two TD passes by Tyler Huntley in the third quarter. He connected with Zack Moss on a 24-yard play on the opening drive of the half to cut it to 20-7 and then threw a 25-yarder to Samson Nacua late in the third quarter to make it 23-15 following a 2-point conversion. The Utes then drove into Oregon territory before Huntley was sacked by Keyvon Thibodeaux on second down. Utah ended up punting on fourth-and-4 from the Oregon 40 after being stopped on three fourth downs earlier in the game. Verdell struck with his big run five plays later and added a 31-yard score later in the fourth against the nation's top-ranked run defense to put the game out of reach. - AP College Football

  2019 PAC-12 FOOTBALL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Justin Herbert was named the 2019 Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced Thursday. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their respective sports disciplines. Herbert becomes the first Duck to earn the Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The senior from Eugene, Ore., is a general science major and holds a 4.01 cumulative undergraduate grade-point average.

He has compiled nine terms with a GPA over 4.0 and is a three-time Dean's List honoree at Oregon. Herbert is also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honoree and a two-time CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American. He is a finalist for the 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy, the award presented annually to the best football scholar-athlete in the nation for combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership. Herbert's academic prowess has been matched by his on-field performance throughout his collegiate career. He has 31 passing touchdowns this year and 3,140 yards through the air, becoming one of just seven players to throw for over 3,000 yards in each of the last two seasons. - Pac-12 Football

  Boston College fired coach Steve Addazio after seven seasons in which the Eagles never surpassed seven wins. Wide receivers coach Rich Gunnell will serve as interim coach, athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a statement on Sunday afternoon, a day after BC beat Pittsburgh to achieve bowl eligibility for the sixth time in seven years under Addazio. "He inherited a program that had a down stretch and led us to six bowl games while recruiting high-character student-athletes that represented BC the right way," Jarmond said. "Our student-athletes have been pillars of the community and in the classroom and that's a credit to Steve and his staff."

Addazio was 44-44 since taking over in 2013, earning a bowl-qualifying sixth win with the 26-19 victory over Pittsburgh. The 60-year-old coach spent much of his postgame news conference talking about the program's future, insisting, "It's not about me." "All I cared about was getting this team to six wins and getting another month with them. And then watching what I watched," he said after celebrating with his players in the locker room. "That was the greatest gift that I got. You want to talk about me? That was a great gift." Addazio lamented the loss of quarterback Anthony Brown and linebackers John Lamont and Isaiah McDuffie, and spoke -- in a familiar theme for him over the years -- about the program's youth.   Justin Herbert threw for 174 yards and a touchdown in his final game at Autzen Stadium and No. 14 Oregon held off Oregon State 24-10 on Saturday in the 123rd Civil War rivalry game. Oregon (10-2, 8-1 Pac-12) wrapped up the regular season with a perfect record at home for the eighth time. The Ducks reached 10 wins overall for the first time since 2014. Oregon State (5-7, 4-5) was denied a bid for bowl eligibility in coach Jonathan Smith's second year. The Beavers haven't made a postseason appearance since 2013. Trailing 17-3 at the start of the fourth quarter, Oregon State closed the gap on Jermar Jefferson's 19-yard touchdown run with 11:03 left.

Herbert appeared to hit Jaylon Redd with an 8-yard touchdown pass but a review determined Redd fumbled before scoring, giving the ball to the Beavers. Oregon State's drive fizzled on a fourth-and-5 attempt, turning the ball over on downs to set up Cyrus Habibi-Likio's 20-yard touchdown run with 1:15 left. Oregon was cruising toward a possible bid in the College Football Playoff last weekend when it was upended 31-28 at Arizona State. The loss dropped the Ducks from No. 6 in the rankings. Oregon was already assured of a spot in the Pac-12 championship game Friday in Santa Clara, California.   Dillon Gabriel threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, Adrian Killins rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, and UCF concluded its regular season with a 34-7 win over South Florida in the War on I-4 on Friday night. The Knights (9-3, 6-2) were never seriously tested, as they built a 24-0 lead by halftime with a 35-yard touchdown run from Killins and a 32-yard scoring reception from Gabriel Davis. They erased any lingering doubt as to the outcome when they drove 82 yards for another touchdown immediately after USF finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter. UCF gained 495 yards to the Bulls' 181 through the first three quarters. The disparity narrowed to 539-250 after a fourth quarter in which the final margin was all that was left to be determined. The Bulls committed three turnovers, while the hosts committed none. For USF (4-8, 2-6), Jordan McCloud completed 9 of 21 passes for 116 yards and two interceptions.
