With quarterbacks expected to go with at least the top three picks in the draft and Cincinnati at No. 5, numerous projections have Sewell headed to the Bengals. With Taylor running one of the drills at Oregon's pro day, Sewell admitted to feeling some nerves at first but said being able to turn to his brother Gabe, a former linebacker at Nevada going through pro day at UO as well, helped. "At the end of the day, football is football for me," Sewell said. "Going out there clear-minded, not really getting those logos and those people's teams get over my head about that, not to overthink about that. At the end of the day, going out there and performing and doing what I do, being between those lines at pro day definitely brought a lot of memories."

Sewell felt people forgot about him a little bit after not playing last season and wanted to reaffirm that he's the best offensive tackle in this year's draft. The 2019 Outland Trophy winner and unanimous All-American felt his performance last week did that but above all, believes his film from albeit just 21 career college games, shows he's the best in class. "Go put on the tape," Sewell said. "Everybody go ahead and watch what I can do and nobody can do what I do in this draft in the offensive tackle rooms. I bring something totally different to the table and I think people know that. People will say whatever they want to say. All I have to say is put on the tape and watch me work." - The Oregonian

Last fall, Colorado coaches saw enough potential in Christian Gonzalez to throw him into the fire at cornerback. This spring, Gonzalez is still just 18 years old but is benefitting from the experience he got last season. "I do feel more confident, just after getting a regular season; well, half a regular season," Gonzalez said Monday after the Buffaloes' fourth practice of spring. "The game has slowed down a lot. Way more than going into last season out of high school, but it's great." Gonzalez, who turns 19 on June 28, came to CU from The Colony (Texas) High School last summer and earned a starting role in preseason camp. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA did not count last season towards eligibility, so Gonzalez will go into next season as a freshman again. Despite his youth, Gonzalez asserted himself during the brief season for the Buffs (4-2, 3-1 Pac-12). He started all six games and played nearly 90% of the defensive snaps, showing improvement from the start of the season to the end. "He's a good young player," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. "I won't say (he played) outstanding, but I will say better than average job for a first-year player to come in here and play." - Daily Camera

Nix faced several true challenges leading up to his sophomore season in 2020, namely learning how to play under a new offensive coordinator despite a limited offseason due to the coronavirus pandemic. While those were unfavorable situations, they ultimately don't absolve Nix of having some of the same issues as a sophomore that he had as a freshman. The good news for Nix is he has two coaches in Harsin and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo who have built their reputations on developing effective quarterbacks. Bobo mentioned on March 22 that Nix is keying in on his footwork and his progressions, and during the Tigers' open practice on March 20 Harsin repeatedly took Nix aside and discussed several plays after the fact. Nix's talent is undeniable, but harnessing his ability and doing so consistently has yet to happen. The A-Day scrimmage should offer an early glimpse at Harsin and Bobo's early influence on Nix. - Opelika-Auburn News

Three Oregon players have medically retired and are no longer with the program. Offensive linemen Chris Randazzo and Jonah Tauanu'u and inside linebacker Sampson Niu all medically retired, Oregon coach Mario Cristobal announced Thursday. Randazzo, a redshirt-sophomore, opted out of the 2020 season. A former three-star signee in 2018, Randazzo played in one game, against Nevada in 2019, during his two seasons at UO. Niu, a senior, did not play last season and his mother passed away in January. He had 65 career tackles in 33 career games. Tauanu'u, a former four-star prospect and top 100 recruit in the class of 2019, played 16 snaps over two games while redshirting in 2019. He did not play due to injury last season. - The Oregonian

Six Oregon players who were injured last season are back to full participation this spring, three others are on their way back and several others are going to miss spring practice. Running back CJ Verdell (left thumb), tight ends Spencer Webb and Patrick Herbert, outside linebackers Adrian Jackson Jr. and Jackson LaDuke and cornerback Dontae Manning are all "full speed," according to Mario Cristobal. Inside linebacker Justin Flowe (torn meniscus) has been limited but is expected to be a full participant in two weeks, offensive lineman Jaylan Jeffers (left arm) has also been limited and may be held out of spring due to precautionary reasons and tight end Cam McCormick is "progressing well" from an unspecified injury that kept him out of last season, Cristobal said. Offensive lineman Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu will miss spring practice due to the unspecified injury he suffered in the Pac-12 Championship game against USC. - The Oregonian

Oregon once spring practice for the second straight year with a quarterback competition and a returning backup who enters as the favorite. Tyler Shough was in that position a year ago and Anthony Brown hadn't even signed with UO yet. A year later, Shough put up strong numbers for three-plus games, then saw his efficiency tumble in the second half of the season and Brown overtook him during the Fiesta Bowl. Shough left for Texas Tech, Brown returned and is the only quarterback on the roster to have attempted a college pass and Ty Thompson arrives with a ton of hype as the highest-rated high school QB signee in program history. Brown didn't have a full opportunity and time to learn the system last offseason. Spring was cut short, he arrived in the summer and the second fall scrimmage was canceled. Shough started the season off great and then things spiraled. A much more normal offseason might serve Brown as well as any player on the roster. If he takes the reins and shows he can be the every day starter, Oregon has an experienced quarterback that showed flashes of dynamic playmaking late last season. - The Oregonian

Similar to the Oregon's receiving corps, the tight ends have limited veteran experience returning and an infusion of young talent. DJ Johnson is the only returning tight end to catch a pass last season as Cam McCormick once again missed a season due to injury and Spencer Webb got in for a only a handful of plays in the Fiesta Bowl but didn't record a stat. The departure of Hunter Kampmoyer opens the door for a lot of reps in practice and in games. McCormick has battled through a lengthy injury history and at this point, anything he provides in a game would be incredible given his struggles. Johnson went from near the bottom of the depth chart at the position a year ago and not even having a full-padded practice until the fall to being an early breakout performer for the Ducks last season. Now he's the favorite to start in the fall. - The Oregonian

Oregon has needed to overhaul its receiver corps for the past few seasons and the pieces to make that happen are coming in with Franklin, Thornton and Brevard. Spring will give an early indication if the freshmen will challenge for prominent roles this fall but they're likely going to have a chance to contribute immediately regardless. Johnson and Redd are atop the depth chart but both have plenty to improve before they leave college. Johnson was probably underutilized last season but is certainly capable of producing consistent numbers and he is probably Oregon's best blocking receiver. Williams and Pittman both need to have a full season of games to showcase their skills to the max. - The Oregonian

  03/31/21 - CJ VerdellrSr/2022, Oregon + More +

Two of Oregon's best offensive weapons are in the backfield. CJ Verdell and Travis Dye give the Ducks one of, if not the best running back duos in the Pac-12 and one of the better tandems in the country. The emergence of Sean Dollars late last season makes the group even more diversified in terms of skills. Verdell missed the last two games of the season with a left thumb injury that hampered him even earlier than that. It was the first games Verdell missed in his career and he enters what will be his fifth-year junior season will facing questions about health. Oregon tried to lesson the load on Verdell the past few springs, with last year's practices cut short before full contact any way. It's been over five months since he was at 100% on a field though. - The Oregonian

Auburn quarterback Bo Nix and head coach Bryan Harsin are still getting to know each other during their first spring together, but in the last two weeks both gave nearly identical answers on a very important topic. Nix's development has been one of the primary concerns for Auburn during spring practice, and Harsin and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo's backgrounds playing and coaching the quarterback position undoubtedly made the head coach-play caller an attractive pairing.

Nix and Harsin were asked over a series of days about what aspects of the game Nix needs to concentrate on the most, and both the quarterback and his head coach explained there's no shortage of ways Nix can up his game. "Obviously, as a quarterback and as a competitor, really everything. Every part of my game I want to get better," Nix said on March 17. "I want to be consistent, especially from the pocket. Gauging my receivers … getting on the same page as those guys, sticking in the pocket and making throws. I feel like this spring is going to be really good because last year we didn't have one. So this year, there's extra practice time to sharpen some things like feet - having quick feet - and just the little things that play a part in playing quarterback." - Birmingham News

Auburn's first A-Day under Bryan Harsin will take place on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m., FBS Schedules announced on Twitter on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+. Ever SEC spring game will be broadcast on that network except Alabama's A-Day, which will be broadcast on ESPN. SEC Network+ is different from SEC Network because it is not a TV channel. Instead, it is a streaming service "the ESPN App on smartphones, tablets and OTT streaming devices and on computers via ESPN.com," according to SECSports.com. A-Day will be the culmination of spring practice, which started Monday. These practices are the first time for the players to get on the field with their new coaching staff. Only one coach, Cadillac Williams, was retained from the former staff. - Birmingham News

Bryan Harsin detailed his plans for his first spring as Auburn head coach during his appearance on the Talking Tigers podcast with Auburn play-by-play announcer Andy Burcham on Monday. Harsin said the Tigers will begin their spring practices on Monday, March 15 and will practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Harsin explained the alternating days to start the week gives the players and coaches time to process the prior day's work and for the players to recover. The consecutive days to end each week, meanwhile, will give the players a small taste of what practicing throughout the fall will be like. Harsin said the plan is for the Tigers to get seven practices in before their first scrimmage - presumably on Saturday, March 27 - then take a week off for what amounts to a spring break for the players while the coaches prepare for the remaining practices. - Opelika-Auburn News

Central Florida hired Gus Malzahn as its football coach Monday, a little more than two months after he was fired by Auburn. Malzahn was 68-35 in eight years with the Tigers, never having a losing season and going 39-27 in the Southeastern Conference. UCF scheduled an afternoon news conference to introduce its new coach. UCF lost both its athletic director (Danny White) and football coach (Josh Heupel) to Tennessee last month. UCF hired Terry Mohajir as AD last week. Mohajir was the athletic director at Arkansas State during Malzahn’s one season at the Sun Belt school. UCF has been one of the top teams in the American Athletic Conference since joining the league in 2013. The Knights have won the conference three times and played in three BCS or New Year's six bowls. - AP College Football

The first practices of the Bryan Harsin era are about a month away. Auburn teased the start of spring practice on Saturday evening, tweeting out a short video clip to generate excitement for the spring season while announcing that practices will begin in 31 days. That puts the start of spring practices on Tuesday, March 16 -- tracking with what Harsin said last month about aiming for a mid-March start date. It will be Auburn's first opportunity to practice under Harsin, who took over the program in late December after the program parted ways with former coach Gus Malzahn. - Birmingham News

For Oregon to get there will mean getting Thibodeaux, Funa, Andrew Faoliu, Brandon Dorlus, Mase Funa and other members of the front seven freed up to rush the passer. Thibodeaux had 38 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and three pass breakups in seven games last season and won the Morris Trophy as the Pac-12?s best defensive lineman, as voted on by the players. DeRuyter is aiming to maximize Thibodeaux's evolving skills. DeRuyter said Thibodeaux has a skill set comparable to Von Miler, who he coached while at Texas A&M, and schematically Oregon might look closest to that unit.

"The ability to bend, the pass rush value, really excited about him," DeRuyter said. "We used Von in a Joker position, what we called it back then. We will have the flexibility to do that, depending on the package and personnel that we're in to have him there but we're going to move him around a bunch. "I've already sat down with KT and explained to him we're probably not going to have him playing 4i at all, but we're going to move him around. On third down we moved Von from an A gap to a B gap to a C gap, we moved him all around to try to take advantage of matchups." - The Oregonian
