  08/10/21 - Jamal HillrSr/2024, Oregon, 6-0, 216 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

Dealing with a Friday news dump wasn't the way Mario Cristobal wanted to get fall camp kicked off. Following Oregon's first practice at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex, the fourth-year coach announced that projected defensive starters Jamal Hill and DJ James have been suspended from the team indefinitely. Hill and James are each facing potential criminal charges following an alleged shooting of an airsoft gun from a moving vehicle that struck a person in the face Tuesday night in downtown Eugene.

They did not participate in the Friday morning practice. "Those guys are indefinitely suspended until further notice," Cristobal said. When asked a follow-up question about a possible timetable for the return of Hill and James before the Sept. 4 opener against Fresno State, Cristobal said: "That's the only response I have to that." Hill had two interceptions in Oregon's win over USC in the Pac-12 championship game. The sophomore safety from Rex, Ga., earned all-Pac-12 honorable mention last season. - Register Guard

UCF has been picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference preseason media poll, snapping a two-season streak of being the favorite. The Knights, who received 241 points and two first-place votes, finished behind Cincinnati, which was the overwhelming favorite with 22 first-place votes. The Bearcats are coming off a conference championship and a spot in the New Year's Six Access Bowl. The preseason favorite has gone on to claim at least a piece of the AAC championship in just two of the past eight seasons. UCF is coming off a 6-4 season in 2020 and hired a new coach in Gus Malzahn in February. The team returns 16 starters, including quarterback Dillon Gabriel. - Orlando Sentinel

  08/06/21 - Patrick HerbertrSr/2025, Oregon, 6-5, 249 (DS#35 TE) + More +

Patrick Herbert is still technically a freshman in eligibility but close to a senior academically. The former Sheldon High standout is finally healthy and ready to contribute entering his third fall camp at Oregon. As a true freshman in 2019, Herbert made his debut against Nevada but utilized his redshirt while his older brother, Justin Herbert, led the Ducks to a Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl victory. An injury during the second week of the 2020 fall camp prevented the youngest Herbert brother from playing at all last season, which did not count on the eligibility clock.

Herbert, a third-year freshman still seeking his first college reception, is closing in on a degree in sociology with plans to obtain a master's in education. So does the 6-foot-5 tight end feel like a veteran leader or a rookie entering the start of fall camp Friday? "A little bit of both," Herbert said. "School-wise, I'm almost done. But football-wise, I haven't even really got started. It's a weird thing." The good news for Herbert is the 2020 season was strange for everyone as the Ducks finished 4-3 overall with head-scratching losses to California and Oregon State, but still won a Pac-12 championship. - Register Guard

  08/04/21 - Jaylon ReddrSr/2022, Oregon, 5-08, 170 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Every receiver who contributed for Oregon in 2020 is back this fall and three heralded freshmen join them. That's why the Ducks should see greater production and consistency in the passing game this season. More targets, bigger targets and improved targets. Johnny Johnson III and Jaylon Redd are two of UO's eight super seniors and enter their final seasons as presumptive starters but also with stronger competition than a year ago. Mycah Pittman will clearly be a major contributor, as will Devon Williams. Freshmen Troy Franklin and Dont'e Thornton flashed during the spring and will contribute immediately. - The Oregonian

Oregon's Mykael Wright was named to his second preseason watch list. The Ducks cornerback is among 57 players named to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission. An Oregon player has never won the Paul Hornung Award, which Alabama's DeVonta Smith won last year. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville in March 2022. - The Oregonian

  07/31/21 - Alex ForsythrSr/2023, Oregon, 6-4, 303 (DS#9 C) + More +

Alex Forsyth enters his second season as Oregon's center with high expectations and he's planning on being around a while. The fifth-year junior, who was named first team preseason all-Pac-12 and is on the watch lists for the Rimington and Outland trophies, intends to return to Oregon for his sixth season of college football in 2022. "I already told (offensive line) coach (Alex) Mirabal I plan to come back for a sixth year just because I haven't played a whole lot," Forsyth said. "I just started seven games so far and whatever happens this year. I love college football and it's my dream to play here so I'm going to focus on right now playing for them." He is planning on earning his Master's degree in brand responsibility, a one-year program at UO that several athletes, including Sabrina Ionescu and Haley Cruse, have earned degrees in over the last few years. - The Oregonian

  07/31/21 - *Mykael WrightrSo/2022, Oregon, 5-11, 181 (DS#22 CB) + More +

Now the third-year sophomore is racking up the preseason accolades. Wright was named to the all-Pac-12 first team released Tuesday and appeared on the Hornung Award watch list Thursday. "He's one of the best athletes I've ever been around," Oregon cornerbacks coach Rod Chance said during spring practice. "If you show me a defensive back that can move and change direction as well as he does, or better, I'd like to see those dudes." The Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. Wright had 270 yards on 13 kickoff returns in 2020. As a freshman in 2019, he became just the third player in program history to return multiple kickoffs for touchdowns in the same season.

In his career, Wright has amassed 650 kickoff return yards with an average of 28.3 yards per attempt. Wright, who was an all-Pac-12 first team selection last season after finishing with 25 total tackles (18 solo stops), is also a preseason candidate for the Jim Thorpe Award given to the nation's top defensive back. "I think the next step is developing his body," Chance said. "On the football field, there's nothing that he can't do." - Register Guard

  07/30/21 - Anthony Brown Jr.rSr/2022, Oregon, 6-1, 217 (DS#18 QB) + More +

Oregon is the team to beat in the Pac-12. And Anthony Brown is the man to beat at quarterback. After the Ducks were picked to win the Pac-12 in the preseason media poll Tuesday, coach Mario Cristobal said Brown will enter the Ducks' fall camp atop the depth chart. "Anthony will start with the ones. He has earned that," Cristobal said at the conference's media day event in Los Angeles. "He's done a very good job from a performance standpoint, leadership performance, taking on coach (Joe) Moorhead's offensive scheme. "At the same time, the freshmen behind him have done an excellent job as well. It merits them getting an opportunity to compete for that position as well. We will make that happen."

Tyler Shough started all seven games last season but transferred to Texas Tech after splitting snaps with Brown in the Pac-12 championship game and Fiesta Bowl. Brown was a combined 15-for-23 passing for 164 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over USC in the conference title game and the loss to Iowa State in the Fiesta Bowl. The Boston College transfer also had seven rushing attempts for 40 yards and two touchdowns. "He's a very cool, calm customer," Moorhead said during spring practice when Brown took all of the first-team snaps. "He's a guy that has played a lot of football, he's a guy that's extremely intelligent and has a lot of ability as a thrower and a runner...I think he has really seized the opportunity and understands the urgency that's required of this position." - Register Guard

Three of Oregon's six players to miss spring practice due to injury are back to full strength with 10 days to go before fall camp. Running back Trey Benson (knee) and offensive linemen Jaylan Jeffers (left arm) and Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu (unspecified) are all back to 100%, according to Oregon coach Mario Cristobal. Benson, Jeffers and Aumavae-Laulu were all expected to return to action this summer.

Cristobal said tight end Cam McCormick, who has missed nearly three full seasons due to an ankle injury, has made "tremendous progress." Defensive tackle Jaylen Smith (unspecified) is doubtful for the start of camp, but Cristobal didn't rule out his availability beyond that. Running back Sean Dollars, who had eight carries for 47 yards last season and injured his leg during winter workouts, remains out indefinitely. Cristobal said the third-year freshman is looking at "mid-season to late season" for a potential return. - The Oregonian

So much has happened off the field in the last seven months - the dawn of the name, image and likeness policy for players, proposed College Football Playoff expansion, looming realignment - but not much has changed in the perceived pecking order on the West Coast. Oregon is picked to win the Pac-12 championship in the 2021 media poll released Tuesday. The Ducks received 27 of the 40 first-place votes to earn the preseason nod, ahead of both USC (10) and Utah (3).

"I never and we will never see ourselves as a program with a bullseye on us, a target on us. It's never been that way, never will be that way," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said of the lofty expectations during his press conference Tuesday at the Pac-12 media event in Los Angeles. "When we wake up in the morning, our feet hit the ground, we wake up with a hunger, drive, determination to make sure we're always a hunter in a humble way, driven way. "All the other stuff, the fluff and the predictions, it doesn't factor into our regimen, our structure, our DNA, our mentality." Seven Oregon players were named to the preseason all-conference first and second teams - defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux (first), cornerback Mykael Wright (first), center Alex Forsyth (first), linebacker Noah Sewell (second), safety Verone McKinley (second), running back CJ Verdell (second) and wide receiver Johnny Johnson (second). - Register Guard

Sewell, a five-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class, led the Ducks with 45 tackles while earning Pac-12 freshman defensive player of the year honors. He also led the conference's freshmen in tackles for loss (6.5) and sacks (2.0).
