In an age of college football where it's easy to leave, it's remarkable that Elijah Collins has stayed. After all, we're talking about a guy who was Michigan State's featured running back three years ago, rushing for close to 1,000 yards as a redshirt freshman, under a different coaching regime, and, who, in the two years since, has battled injury and illness and watched a new staff bring in four different transfer running backs to replace him. And yet, Collins doesn't see his journey through that lens. "For me, I've seen what Coach Tuck (Mel Tucker) is trying to do here," Collins said last week. "From the very jump, it's been clear. The first day he came in, he said he wanted to go out and make a statement and really bring Michigan State to that next level. I mean, I feel that as well. I was here when Coach D (Mark Dantonio) was here. Things have changed. But it's all for the better. And I could see that progression. So it's really something I wanted to be a part of. Because I know if anything's going to come from it, it's going to be something good."

Perhaps Collins should be the advisor that greets every athlete at the gates of the transfer portal. It's unclear what Collins' role will be this MSU football season. The depth chart, reading the tea leaves, appears right now to begin with Wisconsin transfer Jalen Berger. Colorado transfer Jarek Broussard is expected to play a significant part, too. Offensive coordinator Jay Johnson mentioned junior Jordon Simmons on Thursday, as well. Collins, 2021 Auburn transfer Harold Joiner and redshirt freshman Davion Primm are also battling for carries. It's hard not to root for Collins. He's been through it - a tough and lingering bout with COVID-19 in 2020 that pretty much sunk his season, then a lower leg injury after a promising series of carries in his debut last season during the second game of MSU's season. - Lansing State Journal

Oklahoma State true freshman receiver Talyn Shettron has at times been the talk of the new guys with his impressive athleticism and ability to catch the football. But his spring finale was cut short with an ankle injury. So far, his first fall camp has been hampered by injuries. Shettron, a four-star recruit from Edmond Santa Fe, has been limited on the field for the first week. "Talyn's been nicked up a little bit," OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. "So, he's just still trying to work back into the situation. I would love to get him back out there full speed right away. He started off in the beginning of camp and looked good and then was slowed a little bit again." The Under Armour All-American is also fighting a battle for playing time behind a talented group of receivers with more experience. That just allows the Cowboys more time to get Shettron healthy and prepared. "He's going to be a great player, no doubt in my mind," Dunn said. "It's just a matter of time. It's when. It's hard to play somebody that hasn't taken a ton of snaps. "You got a guy like Braydon Johnson and Jaden Bray in front of him. Those guys in front of him just makes it harder for a young guy to come in and make a play. Timing. But I've seen a lot of good things." - Daily Oklahoman

Arland Bruce, who started four games, became Iowa's most versatile and efficient offensive weapon despite taking the fewest snaps of the five-receiver group in 2021. Bruce (5-10, 200) shifted to multiple receiver spots and rushed 10 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 25 of his 33 targets and finished with only one drop.

Along with bulking up, Bruce has focused on increasing speed and sharpening cuts. Like Johnson, Bruce's focus has grown to a broader understanding of the offense. "Last year, I was kind of just out there running routes," Bruce said. "Now I can adjust to what the corners are doing, what the safeties are doing. Timing is everything. Timing with Spencer and Alex are a lot better than they were last year as well, too. It's pretty frustrating seeing things from last year where I could have maybe scored or did something a lot better." - The Athletic
