In his first season in Norman, Ethan Downs appeared in all 13 games, with 14 tackles, three for loss, and a forced fumble. It wasn't a bad start to his Sooners career at all, but most everyone associated with OU football is expecting much more out of him as a sophomore - including Downs. "I feel more dangerous this year," Downs said. "I feel capable of making an impact." That's a big reason why Downs was one of two defensive players chosen by Venables to represent OU recently at Big 12 Media Days. Downs was one of just two sophomores to take part in the event. Downs was the first sophomore to represent the Sooners at the event since linebacker Kenneth Murray in 2018.

"It's about the work they put in, the consistency of the last seven months," Venables said of why he chose Downs. "It's about the buy-in, the buy-in to the culture, the work they put in, the leadership. It's about how you play. I bet you there's not any third-team guys here right, right? It's earning the right to be here...He's earned that opportunity." Downs has embraced his newfound role among the Sooners' defensive leaders. "I've grown a lot," he said. It's become a running gag, a tweet snarkily promised before every show that always ends up coming true. Shane Beamer, as did Will Muschamp and Steve Spurrier before him, holds his in-season Thursday radio call-in show and without fail, a caller will ask why South Carolina doesn't make better use of its tight ends. When they ask this season - and there is no "if" about it - the inquiries may be laced with more venom. That's because some of those callers may be NFL scouts, wondering the same as Sally Q. Fan: Why not use these guys if you have them? Jaheim Bell and Austin Stogner check into the 2022 season as the No. 12 and 16 NFL-ready tight ends in the country, according to Phil Steele's preseason Bible.

Bell caught more passes for more yards for USC than anyone not named Josh Vann last year, bustin' loose with a five-catch, 159-yard, two-touchdown day in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Stogner caught 37 passes for 654 yards and eight TDs in three seasons at Oklahoma, and brought a surprise gift with him to Columbia when he transferred: Quarterback Spencer Rattler. "He's just another weapon that we can use," Rattler said of Stogner, whose arrival at USC was delayed until this summer. "Just a complete mismatch, no matter what team we were playing. He was always the go-to guy in that third-down situation, or when we need to get the ball up to somebody, he was a big-time target for us." - The Post and Courier

Six Kansas State Wildcats made the 29-man preseason all-Big 12 football team. Five Baylor Bears joined them. And four West Virginia Mountaineers along with four Iowa State Cyclones. One Oklahoma Sooner was on the team. That's right. One. Punter Michael Turk. The OU masses are indignant and maybe they should be. Pushback over the Sooners' and Texas' eventual move to the Southeastern Conference? Maybe. Only three UT made the preseason team, and usually the squad is packed with Sooners and Longhorns. The first game of the Brent Venables era will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 3 and be televised on Fox, OU announced Thursday. The home game against UTEP is one of two Sooners' nonconference games that will be televised on the network, joining the Sept. 17 game at Nebraska, which will kick off at 11 a.m. on the network. OU's other non-conference game, at home against Kent State, will kick off at 6 p.m. and air on SoonerVision on ESPN Plus. While the kickoff time for the OU-Texas game Oct. 8 wasn't announced, the game will air on ABC.
