All of the pieces were there for Nebraska's offense early in the game against Northwestern. A clean pocket? Check. Quick, accurate passes from Casey Thompson? Check. Tough yards on the ground when they needed it? Check. But, the challenge in all of those arenas is doing it consistently for all four quarters, something that failed Nebraska's offense in a 31-28 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. Head coach Scott Frost turned over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, and a pass-heavy opening drive might have been the result of Whipple's typical offensive system. However, second-half struggles led to an interesting response from Frost after the game. "I think we're going to have to learn as an offensive staff that you have to be a little creative in this league," Frost said. "So, we have some things that we can work on. I thought we did a lot of good things, but it's got to be more of a complete game."

In the run-heavy Big Ten, creativity can mean finding the right moments to pound the rock and the right moments to air it out. When the pocket held up, Thompson showcased the arm talent that helped him land NU's starting job in the offseason. Thompson completed eight passes to Trey Palmer and six to tight end Travis Vokolek, who would have played a big role in the second half if he wasn't forced from the game due to an injury. Thompson's pair of fourth-quarter interceptions were certainly game-changers, but so was a controversial fumble call on Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda. The wideout appeared to have a knee down at the same time a Northwestern defender ripped the ball out, and a video review upheld the call of a fumble on the field. - Lincoln Journal Star

Casey Thompson will start as quarterback for Nebraska's season opener in Ireland, NU coach Scott Frost announced Thursday night on his monthly radio show. "Casey's going to be the guy," Frost said on the Huskers Radio Network while complimenting the other four scholarship QBs on the roster including backup Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers. Frost said he "wouldn't be surprised" if more than one plays. But it's the high-profile transfer from Texas who will get the first rep overseas against Northwestern. Thompson threw 24 touchdowns last season for the Longhorns. He's the most experienced QB on the roster, and he's had the edge since arriving for spring camp. His accuracy and velocity improved after a surgery on his hand this summer; Thompson played the last half of UT's season with torn ligaments. "There's no substitute for having played a lot of college football and there's been fewer mistakes from him," Frost said. "It really was a big jump too from spring ball to fall and I think that thumb was probably bothering him worse than he let on. He's throwing it way better now in fall. Oklahoma safeties coach Brandon Hall describes Billy Bowman as a "quiet guy." But make no mistake, that doesn't mean he's not a competitive guy. While Hall, of course, sees that competitiveness on the football field, there isn't really a place he doesn't see it. "Coming over to the house, playing basketball - just anything outside of football, you start to pick up that [this] dude is always playing to win," Hall said during OU media day earlier this month. "It's not just in the weight room and stuff." Bowman's coaches and teammates have seen it, too. Among all of the players that have been discussed during the spring and fall camp, Bowman's name has been mentioned by his teammates almost more than any other.

Bowman's certainly confident entering this season. The sophomore safety enters the 2022-23 season as a projected starter on the Sooners' defense with the potential of being one of the team's biggest impact players. "I definitely felt like last season I lost some confidence," Bowman said. "But I feel like this year, [I've been able] to gain that confidence back with the new coaches coming in. During spring ball, I definitely feel like I gained my confidence back and I'm ready to go." Bowman entered last season as the starter at nickleback, assuming the starting role for five of the team's first six games. He then saw playing time at cornerback but struggled, and his playing time diminished as the season continued. Linebacker T.D. Roof will miss the 2022 OU football season after suffering a biceps injury that will require surgery, head coach Brent Venables said Tuesday. Roof, the son of defensive coordinator Ted Roof, transferred from Appalachian State after his father joined Venables' staff in the offseason. Roof has played in 45 career games during his career at Appalachian State, Indiana and Georgia Tech.

Venables said it hasn't been decided whether or not Roof would pursue a medical redshirt to play next season. "We'll look at what all the options are," Venables said. "He's been through a lot, been at multiple schools and nothing's been easy for him. We'll see. We'll give him all kinds of opportunity based on where his heart is and after cooler heads sometimes prevail. We'll give him another day or two to figure all that out." While Roof was unlikely to be a starter, he was expected to be in the mix for playing time and likely contribute on special teams also. Daniel Parker didn't hesitate. "I'll do it," Parker responded when Missouri coaches asked him during preseason camp in 2018 to make the move from defensive end to tight end. Parker knew that his path to playing time as a freshman might be faster on the offense. But Parker had never played tight end before making the switch four years ago. "He didn't realize how early and how often he was going to have to play," said Joe Jon Finley, Missouri's tight ends coach at the time. Now, Finley is OU's tight ends coach and Parker is a tight end for the Sooners after transferring in the offseason.

"We had that connection," Parker said of Finley. "He knows what I'm about. I know what he's about. It was just good to get back with him." Brayden Willis, with 45 career games played and 12 starts, figures to be OU's primary tight end this season but Parker's varying skill set figures to give him a place among the group. "He brings the mindset that just gives you chills when you think about old-school football," Finley said. "We're going to be physical, and that's the part he absolutely loves. He can go out and catch the ball...He couldn't come here at a better time fitting in with the mindset of Coach (Brent) Venables of being physical, fast and playing extremely hard. Oklahoma enters the season in a familiar spot. The Sooners landed at No. 9 in the Associated Press' preseason poll, the outlet announced Monday. It's the seventh straight season the Sooners are ranked inside the Top 10 in the poll and the 19th time in the past 22 seasons. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame took the top five spots, respectively. Alabama defeated Ohio State in the national championship game last season. Oklahoma is the highest ranked Big 12 team in the poll, one spot ahead of Baylor (No. 10) and three spots ahead of Oklahoma State (No. 12). Texas and Kansas State received votes but did not make the poll. This marks the 23rd straight season the Sooners are ranked inside the Top 25 entering the season, which is the second-longest streak behind Ohio State (34). Kendal Daniels was the top-rated recruit in Oklahoma in the 2021 class, originally choosing Texas A&M. After he was released from his letter of intent, he signed with OSU a few days later. Daniels immediately stood out on the field. His 6-foot-4 frame certainly helps. But so does his athleticism and ability to get to the football. "The ceiling's high," first-year OSU defensive coordinator Derek Mason said. "I don't know how good he can be. I've had a number of guys go play in the NFL, and that's great. Do I think he has NFL talent? Yes. But right now, all I'm trying to do is make sure he gets 1% better." Daniels appeared in three games last season, including the Fiesta Bowl, but did not record a statistic as he maintained his redshirt status.

The Cowboys expect growing pains with Daniels this fall. But they believe he will improve from them. "He's a really good prospect and he doesn't have experience," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "He's gonna gain experience and he's gonna get better. He's gonna make mistakes and he's gonna get better. His attitude is fantastic. His body is what I'm guessing NFL would dream of for a safety, but he's inexperienced. "But he's been tough, he's got some natural skills that we can't coach and he's got a body. Change isn't easy, but one returning Gators offensive lineman has made a positive impression on the new Florida football coaching staff. Coaches have identified redshirt junior offensive tackle Michael Tarquin not only as a contributor, but also a potential leader. "You're just talking about a guy that approaches everything the right way," offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Rob Sale said. "It doesn't matter if it's film study, prehab, rehab, how you take the field and practice, it's everything's 110 percent. "I'm very pleased with Michael. Obviously, we're expecting big things from him this year, but he's going to answer the bell. He's a stud when it comes to his attitude and his daily approach, how he does everything."

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Tarquin, a former North Marion High standout from Ocala, made two starts at right tackle for the Gators last season and is projected to start at the position this season. But he's not taking anything for granted. Tarquin has taken a methodical approach to his development in his first three years on UF's campus. After appearing in three games and redshirting in 2019, he appeared in all 10 of UF's games in 2020 and started two of 12 games in 2021. "Just being patient and just staying steady with it and constantly working hard, constantly absorbing as much information as you can and always being ready for that opportunity," Tarquin said of his approach. "That's something I feel I've always done a really good job of, and I just continue to have hope in that and continue to work hard and get ready to take on that role." - Gainesville Sun

Arkansas freshman receiver Isaiah Sategna appears to be acclimating quickly to college football. Coach Sam Pittman alluded to Sategna's play on multiple occasions during a meeting with reporters following the Razorbacks' first practice in full pads Thursday. Pittman included Sategna as one of multiple receivers who are producing in practice. "Isaiah Sategna is going to be a good player," Pittman said. "I don't know when, but it could be (the Sept. 3 season opener) against Cincinnati, it could be next year - I don't know. But he's done a really good job." Pittman indicated Sategna caught a touchdown during team drills Thursday.

During another point in individual work, he showed good balance to keep his feet inbounds as he hauled in a back-shoulder pass in front of a pylon - a catch that earned an attaboy from his position coach, Kenny Guiton. Sategna, a 5-11, 173-pound slot receiver caught 100 passes for 1,908 yards and 17 touchdowns last season at Fayetteville High School. His yardage total was best among all high school receivers in the nation. Unlike most of his classmates, Sategna did not go through spring practice earlier this year. He opted instead to run track and won state championships in the long jump, 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Isaiah Sategna is confident he will continue to compete in football and track and field at a high level at the University of Arkansas - and beyond - just as he did at Fayetteville High School. "My goal is to be in the Olympics and play in the NFL," Sategna said. "I do feel that's pretty realistic." Sategna, 5-11 and 175 pounds, is a freshman receiver for the Razorbacks and signed his football scholarship with the understanding he also could be on the track and field team. "Everybody would have had to share him," said Sam Pittman, going into his third season as Arkansas' football coach. "Or he just would not have been interested in your school. "We certainly didn't have a problem with that. We want him to be great at whatever he's willing to work for. He does want to do track. He should. "We'll be able to go over there and watch him run and watch him jump and watch him run the hurdles. We're all for him, and the biggest reason is he's on our football team. We wanted him." Last season Sategna had 100 catches for 1,908 yards and 17 touchdowns to help Fayetteville reach the Class 7A state championship game, where Bryant beat the Bulldogs 42-38. - Northwest Arkansas Times
