  09/02/19 - Jalen Hurts, Sr/2020, Oklahoma, 6-1, 222 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Even one of the best nights ever for an Oklahoma player wasn't good enough for Jalen Hurts. The new Sooners quarterback passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more, and No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past Houston 49-31 on Sunday night. It was Hurts' first game for the Sooners since he transferred from Alabama. He put on a show as his predecessor, 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, watched. He posted 508 total yards, the fifth-most in school history. Hurts was not impressed. And at a school that has produced back-to-back Heisman-winning quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield and Murray, nitpicking has become the norm at that position. "We did some really good things out there tonight, but there are a lot of things we can improve on," he said. "We've got to take that next step."

Hurts started at Alabama for two years before losing the job to Tua Tagovailoa. He stayed as a backup at Alabama last season, then transferred to Oklahoma and won the starting job in preseason camp. He looked at home in the opener - he completed 20 of 23 passes for 332, ran for 176 yards on 16 carries and helped the Sooners gain 686 total yards. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley liked how Hurts handled the situation. "He played good," Riley said. "There were things he could do better, but I thought he handled the moment good. You could tell out there that he'd been in it, certainly. I'm sure he had some nerves, but he did a good job managing them." - AP College Football

  08/28/19 - *CeeDee Lamb, Jr/2020, Oklahoma, 6-2, 198 (DS#1 WR) + More +

It's CeeDee Lamb's turn to be Oklahoma's big-name receiver. The past two years, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown garnered much of the attention with his blazing speed and highlight-reel plays before leaving for the NFL. Now, Lamb is in position to garner the attention and accolades. The 6-foot-2 junior said he will not be complacent now that he is the main man. "I'm just trying to go out there and be great," he said. "Show everybody what I can do for the most part, that I've gotten better, that I've gotten bigger, faster, stronger. I just want to do all I can on my part, on my end, to help the team win."

Oklahoma has a history of players stepping up to become star receivers in recent years. In 2015, Dede Westbrook was the No. 2 option behind Sterling Shepard. The next year, he won the Biletnikoff Award winner for the nation's top receiver. In 2017, after Westbrook went to the NFL, Brown emerged. Last season, Brown was a first-team Associated Press All-American. Lamb has been a co-star at times. He has 111 catches for 1,965 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career, with yardage and touchdown totals that sit at 10th place in school history. Last season, he caught 65 passes for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had 160 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas State, 167 yards and a score against Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game and 109 yards and a touchdown in the College Football Playoff loss to Alabama. "I've just got to keep it rolling, man," he said. "That's my motto going into this season, is keep it rolling." - AP College Football

  08/20/19 - Jalen Hurts, Sr/2020, Oklahoma, 6-1, 222 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Jalen Hurts' rise to the starting quarterback position at Oklahoma wasn't a foregone conclusion, despite his wealth of championship experience at Alabama. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley took his time before naming Hurts the starter for the fourth-ranked Sooners' Sept. 1 season opener against Houston. Though Hurts played in three national championship games for Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2017 national title, Riley said he wanted to see how Hurts would adjust to a new system after he transferred to Oklahoma in January .

Hurts barely won the job over redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler. Hurts didn't clinch the job until Riley reviewed a recent scrimmage. Riley spent two years as Oklahoma's offensive coordinator and is entering his third as the Sooners' head coach, yet this might have been his toughest call. "I just thought he was just slightly better here as it went on, and it was slightly," Riley said. "Probably the closest one (quarterback race) that we've had since I've been at Oklahoma." - AP College Football

  08/19/19 - Jalen Hurts, Sr/2020, Oklahoma, 6-1, 222 (DS#7 QB) + More +

No. 4 Oklahoma has named Jalen Hurts its starting quarterback for the Sept. 1 season opener against Houston. Hurts played in three national championship games for Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2017 national title. He transferred to Oklahoma in January and has won the job over redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler. Hurts started the 2016 and 2017 seasons and led Alabama to a 26-2 record. He lost the starting job to Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 but still played in 13 games. He replaced the injured Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter of the 2018 SEC championship game and rallied the Crimson Tide to a 35-28 win over Georgia. Oklahoma made the announcement Monday. - AP College Football

  08/17/19 - Jalen Hurts, Sr/2020, Oklahoma, 6-1, 222 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Hurts is 21 and has already graduated from Alabama with a degree in communications. Running back Trey Sermon said Hurts' maturity stands out. "He's an old head to me," Sermon said. "He listens to a lot of old-school music. He makes a lot of jokes that you hear that my uncle would say." Mayfield was a fiery, vocal leader who would yell and jump around. Murray was more subdued, but had a swagger that his teammates latched onto. Hurts? He says: "I chill." "He's kept to himself, but he's still always working," Lamb said. "He's always either with film or he's trying to go get some routes in. He's definitely the most laid back guy on the team, if not top five."

Hurts feels his personality meshes well with Riley's, and he likes being paired with an aggressive, offensive-minded coach. "I think coach Riley has really good intentions," he said. "Really good intentions with really bad intentions." Hurts sees Riley as a players' coach and said Riley has made a special effort to build a connection with him. "Our relationship has really grown," Hurts said. "You kind of have to force it because of the short time I'm here and how much I really need to take in before we actually get into gameplay. It's a relationship I definitely appreciate. Definitely a different relationship from coaches I've had in the past. I think the relationship can take us a long way. I think it can take this team a long way." - AP College Football

  08/09/19 - *Tre Norwood, rJr/2021, Oklahoma, 6-0, 192 (DS#8 FS) + More +

Oklahoma defensive back Tre Norwood is out for the season with an undisclosed injury. Coach Lincoln Riley made the announcement Friday. Norwood started all 14 games last season and was the projected starter at nickel back this season. Riley said the junior will be missed because of his experience and versatility, including his play on special teams.

Last season, Norwood tied for fifth on the team with 58 tackles last season. He had an interception in the final minute of last season's Big 12 title game victory over Texas and five tackles in the College Football Playoff loss to Alabama.   Oklahoma defensive back Tre Norwood was expected to be a big part of the Sooners' defensive revamping under new coordinator Alex Grinch. Now, Norwood could miss significant time after suffering an injury in practice this week. After Tuesday night's practice, Norwood was seen leaving the practice field on crutches. ESPN reported that Norwood suffered a knee injury and that his return for this season was in question.

A source close to Norwood told The Oklahoman that "it doesn't look good." The junior from Fort Smith, Arkansas, started 14 games last season. He played for much of the year as a cornerback but shifted to safety and nickelback late in the season. - The Oklahoman

  08/03/19 - Kennedy Brooks, rSr/2022, Oklahoma, 5-11, 209 (DS#12 RB) + More +

Oklahoma and football coach Lincoln Riley both offered statements Saturday after a student made abuse allegations public against running back Kennedy Brooks the night before. Mallory Jech on Friday identified herself as an alleged victim of mental and physical abuse by Brooks, who was cleared by OU's Title IX office in an investigation nearly one month ago and has been since reinstated. He participated in Saturday's first preseason practice. Twenty minutes before the conclusion of that workout, OU released this statement:

"OU has been made aware of social media posts in reference to a recent Title IX investigation. Title IX reports and investigations are confidential in order to protect the privacy of both the individual reporter and the respondent involved in the investigation. University policy is to conduct investigations involving student athletes independent of OU Athletics.
