ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 57. Collin Oliver, DE, Oklahoma State, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stats: 29 tackles (20 solo), 11. 5 sacks. Last year's ranking: NR. As a freshman, Oliver had 29 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. The Cowboys lost defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to Ohio State and return just four starters, but Oliver is undoubtedly the guy you want back after a freshman season like that. - ESPN.com

In an age of college football where it's easy to leave, it's remarkable that Elijah Collins has stayed. After all, we're talking about a guy who was Michigan State's featured running back three years ago, rushing for close to 1,000 yards as a redshirt freshman, under a different coaching regime, and, who, in the two years since, has battled injury and illness and watched a new staff bring in four different transfer running backs to replace him. And yet, Collins doesn't see his journey through that lens. "For me, I've seen what Coach Tuck (Mel Tucker) is trying to do here," Collins said last week. "From the very jump, it's been clear. The first day he came in, he said he wanted to go out and make a statement and really bring Michigan State to that next level. I mean, I feel that as well. I was here when Coach D (Mark Dantonio) was here. Things have changed. But it's all for the better. And I could see that progression. So it's really something I wanted to be a part of. Because I know if anything's going to come from it, it's going to be something good."

Perhaps Collins should be the advisor that greets every athlete at the gates of the transfer portal. It's unclear what Collins' role will be this MSU football season. The depth chart, reading the tea leaves, appears right now to begin with Wisconsin transfer Jalen Berger. Colorado transfer Jarek Broussard is expected to play a significant part, too. Offensive coordinator Jay Johnson mentioned junior Jordon Simmons on Thursday, as well. Collins, 2021 Auburn transfer Harold Joiner and redshirt freshman Davion Primm are also battling for carries. It's hard not to root for Collins. He's been through it - a tough and lingering bout with COVID-19 in 2020 that pretty much sunk his season, then a lower leg injury after a promising series of carries in his debut last season during the second game of MSU's season. - Lansing State Journal

2022 PRESEASON ROTARY LOMBARDI AWARD WATCHLIST: Brock Martin, Oklahoma State, S-Sr DE,...Martin heads into his super senior season as one of nine Cowboys who have elected to take advantage of their extra season of eligibility. An established veteran on the defensive side of the ball, Martin's 50 career games played in are the most on the OSU roster and his 22 career starts are tied for second most on the defense entering 2022. He comes off his best season of his career in 2021 where he was selected to the All-Big 12 First Team by the coaches in the conference after racking up 41 tackles, which were most on the OSU defensive line, and ranked second in sacks (9.0) and third in tackles for loss (14.0). - Oklahoma State Football

Kendal Daniels was the top-rated recruit in Oklahoma in the 2021 class, originally choosing Texas A&M. After he was released from his letter of intent, he signed with OSU a few days later. Daniels immediately stood out on the field. His 6-foot-4 frame certainly helps. But so does his athleticism and ability to get to the football. "The ceiling's high," first-year OSU defensive coordinator Derek Mason said. "I don't know how good he can be. I've had a number of guys go play in the NFL, and that's great. Do I think he has NFL talent? Yes. But right now, all I'm trying to do is make sure he gets 1% better." Daniels appeared in three games last season, including the Fiesta Bowl, but did not record a statistic as he maintained his redshirt status.

The Cowboys expect growing pains with Daniels this fall. But they believe he will improve from them. "He's a really good prospect and he doesn't have experience," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "He's gonna gain experience and he's gonna get better. He's gonna make mistakes and he's gonna get better. His attitude is fantastic. His body is what I'm guessing NFL would dream of for a safety, but he's inexperienced. "But he's been tough, he's got some natural skills that we can't coach and he's got a body. We just need to get him out there and let him play. We have to be patient with him." - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma State true freshman receiver Talyn Shettron has at times been the talk of the new guys with his impressive athleticism and ability to catch the football. But his spring finale was cut short with an ankle injury. So far, his first fall camp has been hampered by injuries. Shettron, a four-star recruit from Edmond Santa Fe, has been limited on the field for the first week. "Talyn's been nicked up a little bit," OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. "So, he's just still trying to work back into the situation. I would love to get him back out there full speed right away. He started off in the beginning of camp and looked good and then was slowed a little bit again." The Under Armour All-American is also fighting a battle for playing time behind a talented group of receivers with more experience. That just allows the Cowboys more time to get Shettron healthy and prepared. "He's going to be a great player, no doubt in my mind," Dunn said. "It's just a matter of time. It's when. It's hard to play somebody that hasn't taken a ton of snaps. "You got a guy like Braydon Johnson and Jaden Bray in front of him. Those guys in front of him just makes it harder for a young guy to come in and make a play. Timing. But I've seen a lot of good things." - Daily Oklahoman
