Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields started a petition requesting that the Big Ten Conference reconsider the decision to cancel the fall sports season and allow football teams to make their own choice as to whether they will play or not during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fields, who is a preseason Heisman favorite, said he and many other players want to have a season and believe that the safety protocols that have been established are sufficient enough to mitigate the spread of the virus and keep players, coaches and staff safe. Within just four hours the petition has garnered more than 100,000 signatures. - ABC TV5 News Cleveland

A group of Ohio State football players' parents Saturday joined parents of players at Iowa in calling for the Big Ten to overturn its decision not to play this fall because of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said nine Sooners tested positive for COVID-19 after he gave his players a week break from team activities. The Football Parents at Ohio State posted on social media a letter to Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren, calling for the reinstatement of the 10-game schedule the conference unveiled six days before it postponed football until spring. "We believe that the protocols put in place by Ohio State Athletics has provided an extremely safe environment for our players to prepare for the season," the letter said. The letter also asked for the release of all medical data and information the Big Ten used to make its decision, a meeting with Warren for senior players and their parents, and to permit athletes who want to play to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver. - AP College Football

The Big Ten Conference announced the postponement of the 2020-21 fall sports season, including all regular-season contests and Big Ten Championships and Tournaments, due to ongoing health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In making its decision, which was based on multiple factors, the Big Ten Conference relied on the medical advice and counsel of the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee. "Our primary responsibility is to make the best possible decisions in the interest of our students, faculty and staff," said Morton Schapiro, Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors and Northwestern University President.

"The mental and physical health and welfare of our student-athletes has been at the center of every decision we have made regarding the ability to proceed forward," said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren. "As time progressed and after hours of discussion with our Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee, it became abundantly clear that there was too much uncertainty regarding potential medical risks to allow our student-athletes to compete this fall." - The Big Ten Conference

President Donald Trump joined a U.S. senator and a number of coaches Monday in the push to save the college football season from a pandemic-forced shutdown. There was speculation that two of the five most powerful conferences - the Big Ten and the Pac-12 - might call off their seasons. Farther east, Old Dominion canceled fall sports and became the first school in the Bowl Subdivison to break from its league in doing so; the rest of Conference USA was going forward with plans to play.

A Big Ten spokesman said no votes had been taken by its presidents and chancellors on fall sports as of Monday afternoon and the powerful Southeastern Conference made clear it was not yet ready to shutter its fall season. "Best advice I've received since COVID-19: Be patient. Take time when making decisions. This is all new & you'll gain better information each day," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey posted on Twitter. ”Can we play? I don't know. We haven't stopped trying." - AP College Football

The Big Ten is tapping the brakes on football practice, telling its schools that until further notice full contact practices cannot begin. The conference announced all teams will remain in the first two days of what is known as the "acclimatization period," working in just helmets helmets. The Big Ten said all other fall sports will continue to work with team physicians and athletic trainers to adjust practices to the appropriate level of activity. "We understand there are many questions regarding how this impacts schedules, as well as the feasibility of proceeding forward with the season at all," the conference said in a statement Saturday. "As we have consistently stated, we will continue to evaluate daily, while relying on our medical experts, to make the best decisions possible for the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes." - AP College Football

  08/05/20 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields recognizes the health and financial motivations that might convince college football stars to opt out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus. However, the returning Heisman Trophy finalist said that line of thinking has not applied to him to this point. Asked Tuesday if he had considered opting out, Fields said, "I see where other guys are coming from, but I haven't necessarily thought about it yet." "Growing up as a kid I've always been a competitor," Fields said on a conference call that introduced him and six teammates as 2020 captains. "I love to play football. Growing up in my family, I never really needed anything. My family provided everything I've needed. So getting to the money as fast as I can is not really a priority to me. "Getting with my teammates and grinding every day with coach (Mickey Marotti) in workouts, thats' what I'm cherishing the most right now. Working with them and looking forward to the season, I'm trying to stay as optimistic as possible right now." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  08/05/20 - C.J. Saunders, Sr/2021, Ohio State, 5-10, 179 (DS#92 WR) + More +

Ohio State football announced seven team captains on Tuesday, but one potential returning captain was not on the list. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said former walk-on receiver C.J. Saunders' appeal for a medical hardship waiver and a sixth year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA. Saunders will instead join the coaching staff in some capacity, per Day. That role has not yet been determined. "He's got coaching in his blood, and he wants to be a part of this season," Day said. "I just wanted to make sure, publicly, we all thank C.J. for everything he's done for our program. He's meant a lot to us, and we're certainly disappointed he can't play this season. But we're excited he's still going to be a part of our program." Saunders' decision does alleviate Ohio State's roster crunch. The Buckeyes are now at the 85 scholarship limit for the fall. Saunders rose from walk-on to team captain over his first five seasons in the program. Yet he was not able to play at all in 2019 due to a lingering knee injury. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  07/30/20 - Zach Harrison, Sr/2023, Ohio State, 6-6, 269 (DS#10 DE) + More +

Joey Bosa's record-breaking contract extension Tuesday night brought the football world's attention back to the defensive end factory Larry Johnson runs at Ohio State. One assumes the models still in the shop took notice as well. That includes Zach Harrison. The rising sophomore who came down State Road 315 from Olentangy Orange last as a top-15 national prospect hinted at bigger things that may soon be in his reach. In 2019, Harrison was one of the many Buckeye defensive linemen overshadowed by Chase Young's brilliance. So what do Harrison's freshman-year numbers mean by comparison? He played more snaps than any other defensive end except Young, which helps explain why he reached 24 tackles despite primarily being a backup.

Yet he also showed some ability to chase down opponents and make plays away from the trenches. The five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks reflected solid production for a reserve. Those are the areas where Ohio State needs Harrison to step up and assert himself. The only returning Buckeye with more sacks was linebacker Baron Browning, who tallied five but capitalized multiple times on blitzing off of Young's shoulder against understandably distracted opposing tackles. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

If Ohio State football plays games at Ohio Stadium in 2020, it will do so at 20% capacity. The athletic department made that announcement to season ticket holders on Tuesday, along with several other restrictions for fans attending games this fall. The guidelines were deemed necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic that already triggered the cancellation of the Big Ten's non-conference fall sports contests and has threatened games being played at all this fall. - Cleveland.com
