Don't get Harry Hiestand started on arm length. While some might wonder how that factored into the pre-camp juggling of Notre Dame's offensive line, the veteran line-play guru considers the whole topic somewhat pointless. "That's something that people like to talk about," Hiestand said. "Just watch the guy play. Either he can block or he can't block. Get your hands inside. If you have long arms and your hands are always outside..." He shook his head. Arm length, he said, is "not a big issue."

For proof, he cited Dallas Cowboys perennial All-Pro Zack Martin, one of Hiestand's top proteges during his prior run in South Bend from 2012-17. "A guy named Zack Martin, a future Hall of Fame player, that's all everybody talked about was how short his arms were," Hiestand said. "I thought it was a joke." Martin's 32 7/8-inch arm length was considered a detriment when he entered the NFL as the 16th-overall pick in 2014. The average arm length for an NFL guard is 33 inches. For a tackle it's 34 inches, while a center at the game's top level averages 32 1/2 inches in arm length. While Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman will be out indefinitely after undergoing a medical procedure for a "non-football-related" condition, his presence at practice Wednesday is already rallying teammates. "Definitely somber last night, but seeing him out here today, out of surgery and everything, that's reassuring," tight end Blake Whiteheart, a Mount Tabor alumnus, said after practice Wednesday. "We got after it today. Whenever we see him, he motivates us. Even without him, we've got to keep pushing expectations. They haven't changed at all. He's a big part of our team, but he's going to be here on the sidelines cheering us on." Offensive lineman Sean Maginn also found relief in seeing Hartman at practice. "It was exciting seeing him," Maginn said. "Obviously, we didn't get much information last night. It's human instinct to worry about him, and just to see him out here, smiling, talking to us, and he just reassured everyone that he's going to be OK. His safety is No. 1. He seems in good spirits. We're going to be around him, love on him and just lift him up and remind him that we're here for him."

Hartman received a medical evaluation Tuesday at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. What the condition is or how long Hartman could be out are not clear. "We expect him to be back," Clawson said after practice Wednesday. "It's too early to tell what that timeline is...We expect him to be back, and as it goes along we'll get a better idea. Completely un-football-related..."He's out here today, and he's good...He just wanted those guys to see him and know that he was OK." Hartman's absence elevates Mitch Griffis, a redshirt freshman but one who is entering his third season, to the No. 1 role, with Michael Kern behind him. The Demon Deacons, ranked 19th nationally in the American Football Coaches Association preseason poll, will open their season at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1 against VMI at Truist Field. "We have a lot of confidence in all of our quarterbacks," Clawson said. "They're ready to play, and they're ready to win." Hartman's message to his team, Clawson said, was "'Keep going.' It's hard to have a down day around Bauer. He won't let it happen. "He's great," defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Al Golden said of Bauer. "He's got so much energy. He's a natural leader. He's an Alpha. When it gets hard, he's not afraid to step up and lead." Bauer's not alone. So much has been made early in preseason (understandably so) about how the strength of this team this season can be and should be the offensive and defensive lines. There's depth. There's experience. There's talent. There's drive. They're good. Don't dismiss the linebackers.

Remember how Bauer was among one of the dozen line leaders at practice? He had company with three additional LBs - JD Bertrand, Jack Kiser and Marist Liufau in that first group. That might be as good of a foursome as the Irish have had in years. Individually, they bring their own unique set of skills. Collectively, they can be really good. "We have a brilliant room," said defensive graduate assistant James Laurinaitis, who spends a lot of time with the linebackers. "The best part of that is they challenge you as a coach to really know it. You can't step into the linebacker room and not be prepared." Same goes for the players. Bauer mentioned Golden's playbook and chuckled. All the different looks. All the responsibilities. All the pages. Decide to dive into it at the start of camp, and you'll drown in the details. Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman will miss "an extended period of time" for treatment of what the school described Wednesday as medical condition unrelated to football. In a statement, the school said Hartman sought medical attention Tuesday following a workout. He will miss team activities indefinitely and it's unclear when he might be able to return to competition. The school cited privacy laws in not revealing specifics of Hartman's condition.

The fifth-year junior was one of the top passers in the Bowl Subdivision ranks last year and helped the Demon Deacons reach the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game while tying a program record with 11 wins. In a statement, Hartman called Tuesday "a frustrating day." "I look forward to attacking this rehabilitation process and I am so appreciative of the support I have received from my family, teammates and coaches," he said. Hartman ranked 11th in the FBS ranks in passing yardage (302.0 per game) and tied for fifth with 39 touchdowns last season at the helm of the nation's No. 4 scoring attack (41.0). Four months after downplaying the possibility due to timing issues, Notre Dame offensive line guru Harry Hiestand found a way to move All-America candidate Jarrett Patterson from center to left guard after all. Fully recovered from early March surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle on the left side of his chest, Patterson worked exclusively at left guard on Friday as the Irish opened August training camp. Redshirt junior Zeke Correll, who filled in at center this spring, remained the first-team center until heat exhaustion ended his practice a few periods early. Even when Correll went out, it was redshirt freshman Pat Coogan that jumped in as the first-team center while Patterson (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) remained at guard.

Correll, a Cincinnati product who stands 6-3 and 308 pounds, opened last season as the starting left guard but gave way after five games to Andrew Kristofic. "You've got to look at that unit in terms of all five, not as individual pieces," Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said. "J-Patt being at guard, we feel like, gives those five guys up front the best chance to be successful." Patterson, signed originally as a left tackle in 2018 out of Laguna Hills, Calif., has started at center in 34 of Notre Dame's last 38 games. Patterson, a graduate who spurned NFL interest to play another season, missed the final four games in 2020 after suffering a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. Correll spelled him for two of those games in 2020. Midway through spring practice, Hiestand expressed disappointment at not being able to see Patterson work at guard. "I would want to get him some guard work, just for him personally, but it would've been this spring," Hiestand said. "But not now. Three practices into the first preseason of his Duke tenure, Mike Elko isn't any closer to - publicly or privately - naming the Blue Devils' starting quarterback. Elko said Friday, sophomores Riley Leonard and Jordan Moore must both factor into game plans no matter who gets the start against Temple. "I think in the modern world of college football, the way the speed of the game is nowadays, we're worried about getting our third quarterback ready," Elko said. "As much as we're worried about getting one and two, we're also worried about three because that's how seasons go sometimes." Of course, on-location acting and authentic pasta weren't the only reasons Isaiah Foskey decided to come back for another season. With the help of new defensive line coach Al Washington, the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder is determined to become a complete player and not just a vaunted pass rusher off the edge. "A lot of people said I wasn't an all-around defensive end," Foskey said. "More like a third down-type of defensive end, just get to the quarterback." That's the main reason Foskey said he received a second-round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board when he entered his name as a possible early entrant last December. "I want to show everyone I'm an all-around defensive player," Foskey said. "I can stop the run, get to the quarterback when I usually do. I want to see my name as an all-around defensive end."

Asked what stands out the most about Foskey, Washington goes right to the heart of the matter. "I think passion, if you will," Washington said. "We all have passion. I think it's enhanced when you feel you are in the right place at the right time." Back from his world travels, Foskey believes he's right where he should be at this point in his development. "You don't have anything weighing you down," Washington said. "If you can rid yourself of those things, then I think you can reach another level of passion.
