2023 SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jaylon Spears, Nicholls,...The electric Jaylon Spears put up terrific numbers throughout the year, especially as an all-purpose back, finishing with 126.80 all-purpose yards, good for first in the Southland and 12th in the nation. Anytime Spears touched the ball, good things seemed to happen for the Colonels as he averaged a whopping 6.75 yards per carry, good for ninth in the nation, and has 12 explosive plays throughout the season, which classifies as offensive plays that go for 20 or more yards.

As dangerous as he was as a running back, he was equally as dangerous catching the ball, averaging 18.29 yards per reception. Spears finished with 1,286 all-purpose yards, including 709 rushing and 256 receiving to go with nine touchdowns. He especially came on strong towards the end of the year, finishing with 100 or more yards for scrimmage in his final four games, including a 206-yard, three-score game against Lamar to clinch the Southland title. Spears is the first Nicholls player to earn Player of the Year honors since Sully Laiche in 2019. He is only the third-ever Colonel to earn the honor, joining Laiche and 2018 winner Chase Fourcade. - Southland Conference Football

Eli Ennis chased Texas A&M-Commerce quarterback Jaiave Magalei out of the back of the end zone midway through the fourth quarter and the resulting safety proved to be the difference in Nicholls' 12-10 win over the Lions on Saturday. Texas A&M-Commerce took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, then could not reach the end zone the rest of the way. Gavin Lasseigne converted a 32-yard field goal to get the Colonels on the board and cut the deficit to 10-3 at intermission. Al'Dontre Davis came down with Kohen Granier's 25-yard jump ball in the end zone to tie the game at 10 to start the second half. Nicholls (3-7, 3-2 Southland) pinned the Lions (5-5, 3-3) deep after a punt, and on third and 11 the Nicholls pass rush burst through the line and Ennis led a chase party that forced Magalei to step across the end line. Granier was 18 of 32 for 168 yards but was intercepted twice. Julien Gums had the fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and the 15th of his career, picking up 124 yards on 21 carries. The Lions got 179 yards from three passers and managed just 67 yards on the ground. - AP College Football

Julien Gums rushed for 110 yards and scored the winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter to lift Nicholls State to a 40-35 win over McNeese State on Saturday. The Colonels (2-6, 2-1 Southland Conference) scored three straight touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 34-29 lead. The Cowboys led after a 12-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by Deonta McMahon's 9-yard run in the first minute of the fourth quarter. But then Gums promptly put Nicholls back on top. McNeese chewed up almost five minutes before losing the ball on downs at the Nichols 25.

The Cowboys then ran out the last five minutes. Collin Guggenheim's second short TD run started the rally for the Colonels. James Tobin followed that less than a minute later with a 30-yard interception return. The lead came when Kohen Granier and Terry Matthews hooked up for an 89-yard catch and run. Granier was 19-of-37 passing for 339 yards but had two interceptions. Deonta McMahon ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns for the Cowboys (1-6, 0-3). - Nicholls State/AP College Football

Gavin Lasseigne's 52-yard field goal with about ten minutes to play was the only score of the fourth quarter, but it was enough to get Nicholls past Houston Christian 16-14 on Saturday night for its first win of the season. Leonard Kelly completed 24-and 16-yard passes as Nicholls (1-5, 1-1) converted on third downs twice that helped set up Lasseigne's game-winning kick. Nicholls turned the ball over with fumbles on its next two possessions before Fomby's 5-yard TD pass to Deon Cormier gave the Huskies the lead heading into the fourth.
