University of New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Tuioti has yet to be cleared for team activities because of three reported concussions, the latest occurring on Nov. 7 against Hawaii. He has yet to be ruled out of team activities despite those concussions, even though multiple concussions can result in long-term disability, psychological issues and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), doctors say. And the University of New Mexico hasn't done much to resolve any mystery around its one-time starter.

UNM second-year coach Danny Gonzales has said only that Tuioti checks in with medical staff weekly, and if he is not cleared before the start of preseason camp on Aug. 3, he'll become a student assistant coach. Tuioti's status for the season will be determined before camp begins, Gonzales said. UNM has shielded Tuioti from interview requests from the media. He hasn't spoken publicly since his latest injury in November. Gonzales says it is because he believes Tuioti doesn't have answers for his status with "all the scenarios, the unknown out there of what is going to transpire with him." Gonzales wants to wait until there is a final determination before making the quarterback available to the media. - Albuquerque Journal

As Kansas football players get initiated this summer into what head coach Lance Leipold and his staff expect of them, a handful of Jayhawks already are getting noticed. The team's director of sports performance, Matt Gildersleeve, tabbed veteran quarterback Miles Kendrick KU's first "guy of the week" for all that the QB has done during the Jayhawks' strength and conditioning workouts so far. "Guy of the week is the guy that moves the needle the most in this program - not just maintains the standard or is consistent with it, but he is relentlessly pursuing the enhancement of our standard here," Gildersleeve explained in a video posted to KU football's social media accounts.

"He walks in the room and makes it better because he's there," Gildersleeve added, as he explained what he's looking for from a player before bestowing a Jayhawk with the honor. "He's gonna elevate those around him. He's gonna serve our room - he walks into it, he serves the people around him, he makes them better." A senior from Morgan Hill, Calif., Kendrick is now in his fourth year at KU. During the past several months in particular, teammates and coaches have lauded his approach as a leader within the facility. - Lawrence Journal World

Nate Jones, a dynamic running back who did not practice during the University of New Mexico's spring football drills, has entered the transfer portal, he announced on Twitter Friday night. Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound freshman, was second on the team last season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries. Gonzales never specified why Jones was absent for the spring. Jones also would not comment on the reason. Gonzales only would say on Saturday that Jones did not meet "our expectations," just as he said in March. Jones showed explosiveness and great potential when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii on Nov. 7, which was his debut. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact with a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal

Pola-Gates dealt with some injury issues early in his tenure at Nebraska but now is squarely on the No. 2 line with Farmer, and is a player Fisher seems to have a lot of confidence in. Odds are that at some point in 2021 he's going to be counted on in a big way. Out of high school, Pola-Gates was considered a four-star prospect and one of the best athletes in NU's 2019 class. - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska assistant coach Travis Fisher says he wants to build the best secondary in the country. Think about that for a second. He's not messing around here. Nobody's saying his secondary is there, yet, or even close. But the group he has now is impressive - arguably the best overall position group on the team. It's striking when Fisher's second-string defensive backs take the field. It's a group many teams would welcome as starters. We're talking about sophomores Braxton Clark and Nadab Joseph at corner, and redshirt freshmen Myles Farmer and Noa Pola-Gates at safety. There's serious size, speed and athleticism in that group. Redshirt freshman Javin Wright and freshman Isaac Gifford will play important hybrid roles in the future. In fact, the future may well be this season. Pola-Gates (5-11, 190) has made "a big-time jump" this spring, Fisher said. Pola-Gates has ample experience on special teams, while Joseph (6-2, 190) has a smidgen of experience on special teams. Bottom line, they're largely unproven defensively. But their talent is evident. - Lincoln Journal Star

Wilson, Gonzales and the other UNM quarterbacks said it's all about competing and no one will be handed the starting role. Yet, Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 203-pound dual threat, said he has done his research. He left Kentucky because he wants the opportunity to throw the ball more and showcase his arm talent. Wilson said he trusts UNM offensive coordinator Derek Warehime because he played for his "pops," Nick Warehime, the coach at the time at Del City High School in Oklahoma. "A lot of that is just confidence, just believing in yourself," Wilson, 23, said. In 2018 as a redshirt sophomore, Wilson led Kentucky to its first 10-win season since 1977. That season featured a 27-16 win at Florida for the first time since 1986, and ended with a 27-24 win over Penn State in the Citrus Bowl. He had just come from Garden City Community College in Kansas after he transferred from Oregon, where he redshirted his freshman season in 2016 when Justin Herbert beat him out for the Ducks' starting spot. Wilson suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee that required surgery after two games in his junior season in 2019. Last season, he completed 125 of 200 passes (62.5 completion rating) for 1,187 yards and seven touchdowns for the 5-6 Wildcats. - Albuquerque Journal

Terry Wilson, who started 25 games at Kentucky over three seasons, is transferring to the University of New Mexico, the Lobos announced Tuesday, UNM says he will be immediately eligible with one season to play. UNM's seven quarterbacks have 20 starts total. The Lobos went 2-5 in the virus-shortened 2020 season, the two wins coming at season's end, and were led by fifth-string walk-on QB Isaiah Chavez. Second-year coach Danny Gonzales had moved Trae Hall up to the top of the depth chart during spring practice, which concludes Saturday with a spring game. But Gonzales also has said that he wanted a graduate transfer to come in and upgrade the Lobos at the position. - Albuquerque Journal

Tevaka Tuioti, who began last season as University of New Mexico's starting quarterback, is ruled out for spring football because he has not yet been cleared from a concussion sustained Nov. 7 against Hawaii, Lobos coach Danny Gonzales said Wednesday. The determination for Tuioti to be cleared will be after the April 3 date that UNM ends spring football, Gonzales said. "He's out here every day and...in meetings every day," Gonzales said of Tuioti. "But he won't be cleared for practice." UNM Athletics denied the Journal's request to interview Tuioti after practice. - Albuquerque Journal

UNM offensive lineman Teton Saltes and punter Tyson Dyer are among eight former Lobos who will participate in the UNM Pro Day on Thursday. Saltes' goal is to bench press 225 pounds 25 times. He is raising money while pursuing that, asking for a donation for each repetition "to support Uplifting Athletes and its mission to inspire the Rare Disease Community with hope through the power of sport," Saltes said on a web page at https://charity.pledgeit.org/f/ZIUOczMYQj. Saltes tweeted the information Wednesday morning on Twitter. Saltes, a 6-foot-6, 322-pound right tackle, won the Wuerffel Trophy in January awarded to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. Team representatives from the Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders will conduct the pro day. - Albuquerque Journal

There's a young face, rather a talented running back, missing from University of New Mexico spring football thus far. Nate Jones, an explosive runner who was second on the team last season with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries, is out at this time. UNM coach Danny Gonzales would not comment specifically on the reason for Jones being away from practices. "If you don't take care of yourself on and off the field, it doesn't matter; if you don't meet our expectations, you're not out here," Gonzales said after Wednesday's practice. "So, right now that's where he's at: he's not meeting our expectations." Jones, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound four-star recruit rated by ESPN, had a remarkable debut on Nov. 7 when he ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in a 39-33 loss at Hawaii. He had sat out the week prior because he had been in close contact with a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 and was near the end of a 14-day quarantine. - Albuquerque Journal

Fourteen seniors, nine on defense led by end Joey Noble, are returning on scholarship to play for the University of New Mexico football team, coach Danny Gonzales announced via Twitter on Saturday morning. Those staying with the Lobos are defensive backs Patrick Peek, Shaddrick Lowery, Tony Collier and Corey Hightower; defensive linemen Noble, Ben Gansallo and Adam Gay; linebackers Reco Hannah and Devin Sanders; offensive linemen Kyle Stapley, Austin Cook and Ben Davis; tight end Kyle Jarvis; and wide receiver Emmanuel Logan-Greene. The coronavirus-delayed and shortened 2020 season did not count against a player's eligibility. Last year, before the season, Gonzales told the UNM seniors that none would be guaranteed a scholarship in 2021 due to the Lobos' cap of 85 scholarships. - Albuquerque Journal

University of New Mexico punter Tyson Dyer is leaving the Lobos in his attempt to reach the NFL, while wide receiver Jordan Kress and defensive back Michael LoVett III have entered the transfer portal. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jathan Washington, who did not play in any games in 2020, said on Twitter on Monday that he also is entering the transfer portal. Dyer and LoVett announced their intentions on Twitter on Tuesday, and various media outlets were reporting Kress' intent to transfer. - Albuquerque Journal

Kentucky football quarterback Terry Wilson is planning to use his extra season of eligibility but not at UK. Wilson served as Kentucky's starter for two full seasons and part of a third that ended early due to a knee injury. He led the Wildcats to wins at Florida, Tennessee and Louisville as well as bowl victories over Penn State and NC State as the starting quarterback. However, he was the target of frequent criticism as Kentucky's offense failed to develop a consistent passing game during his tenure. The Oklahoma native finishes his UK career with a 17-8 record as starting quarterback. He is the first player in program history with at least 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his career. - Courier Journal

Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson says he will enter the NCAA transfer portal for his final season of eligibility after leading the Wildcats to two bowl wins in three years. Wilson announced his intention to transfer in an Instagram post Monday night in which he thanked his Kentucky coaches and teammates. He helped Kentucky beat No. 24 North Carolina State 23-21 in last weekend's Gator Bowl to cap his comeback from a season-ending left knee injury in the second game of 2019. Two years ago, Wilson guided Kentucky past Penn State in the Citrus Bowl to complete a 10-win season, its first since 1977. - AP College Football
