Sometimes what a college football player does off the field is just as rewarding as what he does on it. For Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill, that held true when he was presented with the key to his hometown Tuesday evening. Mayor Robert Smith awarded Hill the ceremonious key to Columbus during a city council meeting. Smith commended Hill for his heroism when he tweeted that he will not represent Mississippi as a college football player until the Confederate battle emblem was removed from the state flag. Five days after Hill's tweet, the Mississippi legislature voted to remove the emblem.

"We have all these big-time athletes who have a voice but won't speak on it," Hill said during the presentation. "I said, why not me? That's the thing - you can't be scared to speak up. Being scared to speak up, the situation will never get handled." Hill's tweet and pressure from the SEC and NCAA led to key college athletics figures from the state of Mississippi - including MSU athletic director John Cohen and football coach Mike Leach - to lobby legislators to change the state flag. Hill was also an active participant in a racial equality march that took place in the streets of Starkville on June 6, less than two weeks after the death of George Floyd. - The Clarion Ledger

Jamar Chaney is headed back to Mississippi State. A former Bulldog standout and seventh-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2010 NFL draft, MSU announced Wednesday that Chaney will join coach Mike Leach's staff as a senior defensive analyst. "Mississippi State means so much to me and my family, and I appreciate Coach Leach for the opportunity to return home to a place that I have so many great memories," Chaney said in a news release. "I am excited to be a part of an outstanding football staff and athletic department, and I can't wait to get to work." A Port St. Lucie, Florida native, Chaney spent the 2019 season as an assistant director of player personnel under former MSU coach Dan Mullen at Florida. During his time at MSU, Chaney notched 286 tackles and six sacks in 49 games played between 2005 and 2009. - The Dispatch

In 2018 at Stanford, the 6-foot-5 pocket passer threw for 3,540 yards and 29 touchdowns. Now he heads to join forces with new Bulldog coach Mike Leach and bring his Air Raid to the SEC. That will be fascinating to watch. Is Mississippi State ready to compete with the big boys in the SEC in Year One under Leach? Probably not. But Costello is. The team opens with New Mexico, North Carolina State, Arkansas, Tulane and Texas A&M however and it is quite possible the Bulldogs are 5-0 after that stretch. If that happens, Costello will be in that early-season Heisman talk. Then they play at Alabama, at LSU and against Auburn. - Opelika-Auburn News

In an offense predicated on the aerial attack, there's perhaps no position more crucial to Mike Leach's success at MSU than under center -- or, rather, in the shotgun. For Leach, his first few weeks in Starkville were busy devising a coaching staff while also scrounging the graduate transfer market for a potential quarterback to run the show this fall -- or whenever football does return. "It's a new resource nowadays," Leach said of the transfer portal at his introductory press conference Jan. 10. "It's both positive and negative, but it can be a resource. I don't think it can be ignored for any position. Football's a competitive sport, and you're always trying to upgrade. Of course, everybody, regardless of position, remembers somebody that played from whenever. But if you can upgrade, that's the point of a team game."

In response, the Bulldogs landed a commitment from Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello -- a two-time Pac-12 all-Academic honorable mention, a second team all-conference honoree in 2018 and a former Cardinal team captain. Costello is the most experienced option of the four scholarship quarterbacks MSU currently carries. In 28 career games at Stanford, he completed 495 of 791 passes for 6,151 yards and 49 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions. His best year in a Cardinal uniform came as a sophomore, throwing for 3,540 yards and 29 touchdowns while guiding his team to a 9-4 record. "He's one of those take-charge guys -- very dedicated, competitive," former Santa Margarita High School head coach Rick Curtis said of his one-time signal-caller. "One of the great things about him is he really could rally his teammates around him. He liked that role, and they kind of gravitated toward him." While Costello has yet to arrive on campus, there shouldn't be much competition from those already enrolled at MSU for the starting job. - The Dispatch

Replacing a two-year starter is never easy. Replacing one as productive as Cameron Dantzler is even more difficult. With Dantzler now off to the professional ranks after being selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, cornerbacks coach Darcel McBath will be tasked with replacing his production and leadership come fall, though he boasts a host of youthful options to do so. Most notably, sophomores Martin Emerson Jr. and Jarrian Jones will see increases in their playing time after standout freshman campaigns in coach Joe Moorhead's final year at the helm. Emerson profiles much the same way Dantzler did given his lanky 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame. - The Dispatch

Without a selection to make during the final day of this year's NFL draft, the New Orleans Saints and coach Sean Payton began turning their attention to the incoming undrafted free agent pool they would have to move on the moment the draft ended. When one of their desired players had a deal lined up elsewhere, the team sprung into action, Payton told reporters Thursday. The Saints began a dialogue with Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens and his agent, Buddy Baker. They quickly discovered Stevens had a deal lined up with the Carolina Panthers. Letting Stevens go to a NFC South division rival wasn't going to sit well with Payton, although the quarterback's motivations made sense. He had worked with Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, then a graduate assistant, at Penn State, where Stevens had started his collegiate career. "It became my project," Payton said, per ESPN. "There's no way I was going to lose this kid."

Payton informed Baker the Saints would match Carolina's offer, then dangled $144,000 guaranteed. Stevens didn't budge. He wanted to honor the verbal commitment he had made to the Panthers. So Payton pulled off a maneuver that took the situation out of Stevens' hands. The Saints dealt a sixth-round selection in next year's draft for the 240th overall pick. Payton said he texted Brady, his former assistant and former LSU passing game coordinator, "Not so fast." At No. 240, the Saints chose Stevens. He then texted Stevens. - The Clarion Ledger

Darryl Williams was the biggest body in the room. With a red and white Cat in the Hat cap resting on his head and a rotation of Dr. Seuss books nestled in his hands, the former Mississippi State center sat in a chair and read aloud while a couple dozen intrigued pupils peered at him. The students of Westhills Elementary School in Bessemer, Alabama, wore hats they crafted themselves out of construction paper to match Williams. They silently sat on a mat on the classroom floor while Williams recited lines of Seuss' most famous rhymes. "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."

Williams, a Bessemer native and a 2019 graduate of Mississippi State, is never shy to give back to his community. He made sure to be a part of Read Across America Day on March 2 even though it came the Monday after Williams had spent an entire week in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine. He got up early after a grueling week of tests and drills to make it to Westhills. "Just seeing the kids' smiles, it's a big deal to me," Williams said. "It's truly been a blessing to be able to do the things that we do for the children growing up in the same place I grew up in." He went to three other schools within two weeks before they shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic. Williams could no longer lend a helping hand in that environment. He had to find another way to continue performing charitable acts. - The Clarion Ledger
