  12/05/20 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

D'Eriq King threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to help No. 9 Miami beat Duke 48-0 on Saturday night in the Hurricanes' return from a two-week pause amid coronavirus issues. King hit Mike Harley for an 89-yard touchdown in the third quarter for the Hurricanes (8-1, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 10 CFP), while Cam'Ron Harris ran for 96 yards and two scores. Miami's defense was dominant the entire game, holding the Blue Devils (2-8, 1-8) to 177 total yards and forcing five turnovers. Miami earned its first road shutout in 20 years, while Duke was shut out for the first time in a dozen years.

Miami was playing for the first time since beating Virginia Tech on Nov. 14, and had spent the weeks since dealing with positive COVID-19 tests and quarantines. That included having two games postponed. The trip to face the Blue Devils was a late replacement for a rescheduled visit to Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons faced their own coronavirus issues. The Hurricanes had 15 players unavailable, but had no trouble. - Miami/AP College Football

  12/04/20 - Mohamed TourerSr/2026, Miami, 6-1, 236 (DS#19 ILB) + More +

Mohamed Toure makes the most of his time. The Rutgers linebacker and situational pass rusher had a game-changing interception in last Saturday's win at Purdue. He also had two sacks and two forced fumbles in the Scarlet Knights' season-opening win at Michigan State. And he's been a standout special teams contributor all fall. It's not easy to have a star-like impact while playing a backup's snap count. But if the Pleasantville native keeps it up, he won't be one much longer. "I think Mohamed is growing leaps and bounds as a football player," coach Greg Schiano said. "He's learning about the game of football."

Toure was a three-star recruit in high school who stayed committed to the Scarlet Knights after Wisconsin made a late push. He enrolled early ahead of the 2019 season, but only played in two games last season and redshirted. "It gave me time to watch and think, understand the game a little," he said. "It gave me time to develop my body and grow physically and mentally." Schiano credited linebackers coach Bob Fraser for building a strong relationship with Toure and fostering his development, as well as the veteran players ahead of him on the depth chart. Toure has made significant strides from a mental standpoint, Schiano said. "He's always been a tremendous athlete, a big man that can run very well," he said. "But there is a game within a game that most people don't know exist, but if you're going to be a really good player you are going to understand that game. Little by little he's understanding it, and it's fun to watch." - Star Ledger

  12/01/20 - Navaughn DonaldsonrSr/2022, Miami, 6-5, 350 (DS#89 OG) + More +

With UM not having practiced in two weeks, Diaz said it's too early to tell whether Navaughn Donaldson will return this week simply as a backup or whether he will compete with Jakai Clark and D.J. Scaife to start at guard. "We have to get on the grass and see where Navaughn is at," Diaz said, noting it's not entirely clear how practice will look this week because of COVID limitations and there's "only so much rock 'em, sock 'em" that Miami can do in practice this week. That said, Diaz said the "five best guys" will play on Saturday at Duke. "We're happy we have Navaughn back," Diaz said. "He worked really hard in rehab" after a knee injury late last season. Donaldson is a redshirting senior and is able to return in 2021 if he chooses. - Miami Herald

  11/27/20 - Caleb JohnsonrSr/2023, Miami, 5-11, 228 (DS#20 ILB) + More +

Phil Austin has this to say about Caleb Johnson, and he means it in the kindest way possible: "He was just a freak," the Fullerton College assistant coach said of his former player. When Johnson starred at Fullerton, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker was a devastating hitter, could rush the passer and easily dropped into coverage. He out-ran defensive backs and chased down receivers. And he was one of the strongest players on Fullerton's undefeated 2017 team. But before Johnson could parlay his athletic gifts into a UCLA scholarship, he found another use for his skillset: working weekends as a bouncer at bars in downtown Fullerton. "I've seen some crazy stuff when I was working," Johnson said, recalling the seemingly nightly routine of removing at least one customer from the premises. Now instead of throwing rowdy patrons out of bars, Johnson is tossing opposing players to the turf for a UCLA defense trying to turn a corner in the third year under Chip Kelly. The redshirt junior linebacker has 12 tackles, which ranks tied for fourth on the team, with 3 1/2 tackles for loss and 2 1/2 sacks. - Los Angeles Times

  11/26/20 - TeCory CouchrSr/2024, Miami, 5-10, 185 (DS#57 CB) + More +

UM sophomore cornerback Te'Cory Couch - now a starter - remains something of a revelation, a player who thrives on the blitz and in coverage. Against Virginia Tech, only one of four passes in his coverage areas was caught, for 7 yards. He had an interception and a sack. "The problem with Te'Cory Couch is we don't have enough of him," UM coach Manny Diaz told WQAM's Joe Zagacki and Don Bailey Jr. "You would love to have him three places at once every play. Great in coverage. He really has a knack at blitzing. When he gets in there, he finds a way to get to the quarterback. It's always been in critical situations." - Miami Herald
