  12/13/20 - Tyler LytlerSr/2023, Massachusetts, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Colorado backup quarterback Tyler Lytle is entering the NCAA transfer portal. On Saturday evening, a few hours after the Buffaloes' 38-21 loss to Utah at Folsom Field, Lytle announced his decision on social media. With Lytle going into the transfer portal, true freshman Brendon Lewis could be elevated to the top backup spot for the rest of the season. Lewis has not appeared in a game. Lytle, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound redshirt junior from Redondo Beach, Calif., came to CU in January of 2017 after a stellar career at Servite High School. In terms of scholarship offers, Lytle is the most highly recruited quarterback to sign with CU since Fairview's Craig Ochs in 2000. - The Denver Post

Two players who were expected to see the field a decent amount this season for Penn State haven't played any snaps so far through two games. Redshirt junior receiver Cam Sullivan-Brown - listed as a starter in the Nittany Lions' Week 1 and Week 2 depth chart - hasn't played yet. Sophomore cornerback Keaton Ellis has been behind redshirt freshman cornerback Joey Porter Jr. on all three of Penn State's depth charts, but he hasn't played a single down either. Sullivan-Brown had eight catches for 56 yards in 2019. The 6-foot, 191-pound receiver was expected to take a step forward this season for a receiving corps that didn't return much talent from last year. Without Sullivan-Brown, the Nittany Lions have turned to freshmen receivers Parker Washington and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Penn State's depth chart this week lists Lambert-Smith as a starter over Sullivan-Brown. "He had some things going on that weren't gonna allow him to play the way he wants to play and that we know he's capable of playing," Franklin said of Sullivan-Brown. "So he's available, but KeAndre is a guy that we saw do some really good things during camp but was still a true freshman." - Centre Times

  10/11/20 - JB BrownrSr/2024, Massachusetts, 6-1, 280 (DS#999 DE) + More +

The Arizona Wildcats will be without two projected rotation players for the 2020 season, and a third is away from the team indefinitely. Tailback Bam Smith and defensive end JB Brown have opted out because of COVID-19 concerns, UA coach Kevin Sumlin announced after the first practice of fall camp Friday night. Meanwhile, receiver Jalen Johnson has been suspended for a violation of team rules. Smith, a redshirt sophomore, rushed for 203 yards and a touchdown last season, averaging 6.0 yards per attempt. He also caught 12 passes for 181 yards and two scores. JB Brown was entering his senior season. He appeared to be on the verge of a breakout after recording 7.5 tackles for losses, including 3.5 sacks, as a sophomore. He wasn't as impactful as a junior (five TFLs, three sacks), and it was unclear where the 6-3, 267-pounder would fit in new defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads' 3-4 scheme. - Arizona Star News

UMass is back on the grid. Athletic director Ryan Bamford announced on Monday the university intends to play a limited football schedule commencing sometime in mid-October. UMass, one of seven independent FBS programs, is in-step with a nationwide reversal following the Big 10 decision to resume play. The Pac-12 is expected to vote on resuming play this week. UMass shutdown football operations on Aug. 11 with the intent on playing a spring schedule. The decision to resume play was reached after a review of the football program's stringent COVID-19 safety protocols and testing regimen enacted when the players returned to campus in June. More than 1,300 COVID tests have been administered to all members of the football program, with two positive results. Bamford was given the green light to contact potential opponents on Sunday while second-year coach Walt Bell informed the team on Monday morning. - Boston Herald

  09/02/20 - Mark PoperSr/2024, Massachusetts, 5-11, 178 (DS#91 WR) + More +

Last year, Pope admitted he struggled to grasp the playbook as a freshman and he was clearly more comfortable as a sophomore, even if he still wasn't living up to lofty expectations playing in former offensive coordinator Dan Enos' pro-style system. Lashlee could tell some of Pope's issues on film as he rewatched games from last season, and they were trouble for the receivers across the board, he said. "You want guys to play fast mentally. When guys are hesitant, when guys are unsure of what to do, maybe overloaded with what's going on, they just seem to play slower without the ball, getting off covered press, running routes. There's a hesitation there and it's hard to play to your best when you're hesitant and not confident," Lashlee said. "Hopefully, we're putting him in a position to be successful by doing the same stuff over and over again." Wiggins knows Pope's potential better than perhaps anyone else at Miami, save for maybe recruiting director David Cooney, who was the Spartans' offensive coordinator in 2017 when Pope caught a game-winning 72-yard touchdown in the state championship. - Miami Herald

  08/28/20 - Tyler LytlerSr/2023, Massachusetts, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

After the Pac-12 made the decision on Aug. 11 to postpone the fall sports season until after Dec. 31 because of the coronavirus pandemic, Lytle had to shift gears mentally. Instead of battling senior Sam Noyer and true freshman Brendon Lewis for the starting job in preseason camp this month, Lytle will spend the next several months - at least - perfecting his craft even more. "I had three years to really adjust to college football and figure out what I needed to work on," said Lytle, who has been a backup to Steven Montez, now in the NFL, since coming to CU. "You never stop that, really. "Through these past three years, size and strength was kind of a big thing for me I'm at a good weight right now. I've gotten a lot faster, so I'm continuing to improve my body, improve the mental aspects of the game." The 6-foot-5 Lytle is now a legitimate 220 pounds and has combined strength and speed. Never known for his speed, Lytle was asked if that aspect was overlooked by others early in his career. - Daily Camera

University of Massachusetts Athletics announced the cancellation of the 2020 UMass football season on Tuesday. Football student-athletes will remain enrolled in coursework full-time, either virtually or in-person, in line with the University of Massachusetts' update to its fall reopening plan, announced on Thursday, August 6. Football team members began returning to campus for team activities in late June, 2020, with extensive health and safety protocols in place to mitigate the risk of COVID-19. Over the past seven weeks the program had only one positive test with more than 600 COVID-19 tests administered. - Massachusetts Athletics

In the moments after former Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, South Dade High School coach Nathaniel Hudson sent a text to one his favorite pupils: "You got next." Frank Ladson Jr. didn't take long to respond: "I already know." The opportunity for Ladson, a sophomore wide receiver for the Tigers, got even bigger when junior Justyn Ross (congenital spine fusion) was ruled out for the season. If there is a 2020 campaign, Ladson is likely to step into a more prominent role. Those who watched him transform from a quiet high school kid to a 4-star recruit believe the sophomore is ready to take the leap.

"Now is his time to shine," South Dade offensive coordinator Herman Reaves said. "I think it's his coming out year." Last season, then, was his introduction year. In a wide receivers room that also included junior Amari Rodgers and Diondre Overton (who is now out of eligibility), Ladson was cast as a bit player. He recorded nine catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns. He was often grouped with fellow then-freshman Joseph Ngata, who finished with 17 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns. - Charleston Post Courier

  05/13/20 - Tyler LytlerSr/2023, Massachusetts, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The Blake Stenstrom era never really got off the ground with the CU Buffs football program. Now the former Valor Christian star and 2018 three-star quarterback recruit appears to be headed east after announcing Tuesday night on Twitter that he intends to transfer to Princeton. He played in three games for CU in 2019 while serving as a backup to Steven Montez, completing 1 of 3 passes with one interception. His biggest highlight came on a 27-yard run in a brief appearance against USC.

With Montez gone for the NFL - he signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent - the quarterback position is one of many things in flux for first-year head coach Karl Dorrell. Among those expecting to compete for the starting nod are incoming three-star recruit Brendon Lewis, senior Sam Noyer and junior Tyler Lytle. "It is really a wide open position," Dorrell said during a Pac-12 Webinar on Tuesday. "We're coaching them all hard and we're just going to see how the things fall in place when we get a chance to line up at the beginning of the season." - Denver Post

Clemson freshman receiver Frank Ladson had a strong start to fall camp, but his progress is on hold after "a little irritation with his knee" that will keep him sidelined for a couple of weeks, according to Tigers coach Dabo Swinney. "He had just some little stuff in there we needed to clean up yesterday morning," Swinney said following Saturday's scrimmage, Clemson's first of the preseason. Swinney added that Ladson "should be" ready for the season opener against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29. The former four-star recruit was working with the second team during fall camp prior to the injury. - The State
