UMass is back on the grid. Athletic director Ryan Bamford announced on Monday the university intends to play a limited football schedule commencing sometime in mid-October. UMass, one of seven independent FBS programs, is in-step with a nationwide reversal following the Big 10 decision to resume play. The Pac-12 is expected to vote on resuming play this week. UMass shutdown football operations on Aug. 11 with the intent on playing a spring schedule. The decision to resume play was reached after a review of the football program's stringent COVID-19 safety protocols and testing regimen enacted when the players returned to campus in June. More than 1,300 COVID tests have been administered to all members of the football program, with two positive results. Bamford was given the green light to contact potential opponents on Sunday while second-year coach Walt Bell informed the team on Monday morning. - Boston Herald
