  12/10/21 - Jacob CopelandrSr/2023, Maryland, 5-11, 201 (DS#35 WR) + More +

Florida wide receiver Jacob Copeland announced his intentions to transfer Thursday, becoming the fifth UF player and first starter to enter the portal since the hiring of new coach Billy Napier. Copeland, a redshirt junior, led the Gators in receiving this season with 39 catches for 607 yards and four touchdowns. However, he has expressed frustrations on social media this year over his lack of targets. "After much thought, prayer and discussion with my friends and family, I have made the decision to enter the Transfer Portal," Copeland wrote in his farewell note on Twitter. "This has not been an easy decision or one that I have taken lightly; however, I want to do what is best for my development by pursuing my goals and furthering my career." Copeland has totaled 84 catches for 1,331 yards and nine touchdowns in his career, while adding 65 rushing yards on eight carries. He plans to play in the Gasparilla Bowl against UCF on Dec. 23. - Gainesville Sun

  11/27/21 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Maryland earned its first bowl berth since 2016 as record-setting quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa threw three touchdowns and ran for another in a 40-16 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Halfback Tayon Fleet-Davis also had a big-day with a bowl-bid on the line, rushing for a career-best 152 yards and two touchdowns as the Terps (6-6, 3-6 Big Ten) rolled up 575 yards in total offense. Fleet-Davis scored on runs of 13 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter. Tagovailoa had touchdown passes of 25 and 11 yards to Corey Dyches and 38 yards to Brian Cobbs in getting the Terps bowl eligible. He also tallied on a 10-yard run as Maryland opened a 20-2 halftime lead and never looked back.

Rutgers (5-7, 2-7) was seeking its first bowl berth since 2014. Tagovailoa finished 21 of 30 for 312 yards. The yardage gave him 3,595 yards, breaking the Terps’ single-season record of 3,499 set by Scott Milanovich in 1993. After taking the final snap, Tagovailoa chest bumped with receiver Rakim Jarrett, who had seven catches for 111 yards. They then posed for a team photograph in front the goalposts. The Scarlet Knights got second-half touchdown runs of 1 yard from Johnny Langan and 3 yards from Aaron Young.. Kessawn Abraham returned a blocked PAT attempt 85 yards for the other two points. Maryland’s defense stopped Rutgers twice on downs inside its 3-yard line, once in each half. - Maryland/AP College Football

  11/16/21 - Chad RylandrSr/2023, Maryland, 6-0, 190 (DS#2 K) + More +

NOV 15 MAC WEST DIVISION CO-SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Chad Ryland, Eastern Michigan, Kicker, Junior, Lebanon, Pa. (Cedar Crest),...Ryland continues to prove he is one of the best assets in the conference. Ryland was 2-for-2 on FG attempts against Ohio, Nov. 9, an effort which included his program-record-tying 55-yarder. After starting the season just 3-for-6, the Lebanon, Pa. native has hit his stride, knocking in his last eight attempts and 10 of his last 11 overall. Ryland is now 11-for-14 on the season. He is 11th in the MAC in terms of points responsible for, with 76 on the season, while his 7.6 points per game average are fifth in the league. Ryland needs just 19 points to surpass Andrew Wellock (2003-06) for the most career points in EMU history at 299. He currently ranks 21st among active kickers in the FBS with 48 field goals made while coming in 34th in PAT percentage at 97.2. - MAC Football

  10/30/21 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 419 yards and two touchdowns, and Maryland snapped its three-game losing streak with a 38-35 victory over Indiana on Saturday. The Terrapins (5-3, 2-3 Big Ten) trailed 17-14 after a 66-yard touchdown run by Indiana's Stephen Carr in the third, but Maryland answered with two touchdown drives before the quarter was over. Challen Faamatau put the Terps ahead with a 1-yard scoring run, and then Tagovailoa connected with Carlos Carriere for a 14-yard touchdown that made it 28-17. Tagovailoa's second TD pass came in the final quarter on a 45-yard catch-and-run by Carriere. Then Donaven McCulley threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Peyton Hendershot for the Hoosiers (2-6, 0-5), and a 2-point conversion made it 35-28. Joseph Petrino made a 41-yard field goal with 1:20 remaining to make it a 10-point game. McCulley's 8-yard touchdown pass to Hendershot made it 38-35 with 1:00 to play, but Maryland recovered the ensuing onside kick. Tagovailoa and the Terrapins won their first four games this season before blowout losses to Iowa and Ohio State and a road defeat against Minnesota. They got back on track in their homecoming game against the struggling Hoosiers. - Maryland/AP College Football

  10/19/21 - Jeshaun JonesrSr/2024, Maryland, 6-1, 186 (DS#43 WR) + More +

Maryland coach Michael Locksley said the goal for his team during the bye week was to get healthy — mentally and physically. Then he immediately announced two more major injuries. Receiver Jeshaun Jones and linebacker Durell Nchami are both expected to miss the rest of the season. Locksley said Tuesday that Jones had a lower-leg injury that requires surgery, and he said Nchami had upper-body surgery. "We're a team that kind of limped into the bye week," Locksley said. The Terrapins won their first four games this season. Then their much-anticipated matchups with Iowa and Ohio State went about as badly as possible. Maryland lost standout receiver Dontay Demus to a season-ending injury in the Iowa game, and Jones went down against Ohio State. The Terps also lost both games by a combined score of 117-31. Then the schedule mercifully gave them last weekend off. - AP College Football

SEPT 27 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chad Ryland, Eastern Michigan, Kicker, Junior, Lebanon, Pa. (Cedar Crest),...Ryland put eight extra points through the uprights against Texas State, Sept. 25. Ryland's eight PAT makes are tied for the most in a single game in program history. The last player to hit the mark was Paulie Fricano, who did it versus Ball State, Nov. 15, 2017. Additionally, with his eighth make of the day, Ryland passed Justin Ventura (1995-98) for the all-time program record in point-after makes (114). Additionally, Ryland's eight PAT makes are the most in a single game in the conference this year. Ryland was a key part of the Eagles' overall effort which secured the team a 3-1 start to the 2021 season, an accomplishment that has been recorded just 43 times in the 130-year history of the program and has not happened since 1995. - MAC Football

  09/25/21 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

After his unbeaten team won without playing its best, Maryland coach Michael Locksley kept his focus on the big picture. "We haven't played to the standard, but I definitely want to give our team credit that we're sitting here at 4-0 and we're disappointed," he said. "That means that we're heading in the right direction. We've got a locker room full of guys that are happy we won, but not happy with the way we played." Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns, and Maryland beat Kent State 37-16 on Saturday. The Terrapins have won their first four games for the first time since 2016, and their solid start has added intrigue to upcoming matchups against Iowa and Ohio State.

Maryland wasn't necessarily dominant against Kent State, but the Terps stiffened on defense when they needed to. The Golden Flashes (1-3) had the ball in Maryland territory on seven of their first eight possessions, but they managed only nine points on those drives. Tagovailoa, meanwhile, took everything the Kent State defense gave him, repeatedly finding open receivers in another sharp performance. He went 31 for 41, essentially matching his 75.5% completion percentage coming into the game. Tagovailoa was intercepted for the first time this season when Rakim Jarrett couldn't handle his pass in the first quarter. The Golden Flashes took a 3-0 lead, but the Maryland quarterback answered quickly with a 33-yard scoring pass to Dontay Demus. - Maryland/AP College Football

  09/17/21 - Tayon Fleet-DavisrSr/2022, Maryland, 6-0, 213 (DS#68 RB) + More +

Joseph Petrino kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired to lift Maryland over Illinois 20-17 on Friday night. But the win didn't come easy for the Terrapins (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) in their conference opener. In a game best described as weird from beginning to end, the normally explosive Terrapins consistently had trouble against a tough Illinois defense. Taulia Tagovailoa passed for 350 yards (32 of 43) but was held to only one passing touchdown.

Tayon Fleet-Davis carried the ball 11 times for 62 yards for Maryland. He also caught the lone touchdown pass from Tagovailoa. Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters, in his first start since being injured early in the first game of the season against Nebraska, was effective but clearly rusty for Illinois (1-3, 1-1). He was 10-of-26 passing for 185 yards and one interception. Josh McCray carried the ball eight times for 60 yards and had a 38-yard touchdown run for the Illini. Chase Brown carried 14 times for 57 yards. Receiver Casey Washington had a 30-yard touchdown run. - Maryland/AP College Football

  09/12/21 - Dontay Demus Jr.rSr/2023, Maryland, 6-3, 212 (DS#37 WR) + More +

Taulia Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes, and Maryland routed Howard 62-0 Saturday night. Dontay Demus Jr. had six receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins (2-0), who had little trouble following up their 30-24 defeat of West Virginia with another victory. Demus caught a touchdown in his sixth consecutive game, and he is the first Maryland player with consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Stefon Diggs in 2013. "He's been Mr. Consistent for us the last few years, but what I think you see now is the dividends from the work he's put in this summer," Maryland coach Mike Locksley said. "There's no player in our program that's probably matured as much and really, really put the work in to have the type of success he's had." Maryland outgained the Bison, 574-146. Howard (0-2), an FCS program, was 0 of 11 on third down attempts.

The Bison didn't play last fall, then lost their only two games in the spring in coach Larry Scott's first season. "I told them it wasn't about Maryland, it wasn't about the score, it wasn't about anything else, it was about us," Scott said. "We're starting to see the gains we're making and truly believing --- straining and fighting and playing hard and doing all the fundamental things we talk about doing to build a foundation for a program." Locksley opened his Terrapins tenure with a 79-0 pummeling of the Bison in 2019 that fell a point shy of matching the program's scoring record. This wasn't quite as lopsided, but it still wasn't especially competitive. - Maryland/AP College Football

  09/03/21 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

For Taulia Tagovailoa, high expectations come with the territory. His position alone - starting quarterback for a Big Ten team - almost assures it. Throw in his famous last name and a resume that includes a stop at Alabama, and there's scrutiny that other players simply don't face. "Just from being a quarterback there's going to be a lot of expectations, a lot of pressure and stuff like that," Tagovailoa said. "I guess throughout the years I learned to manage that." After his first season at Maryland was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, Tagovailoa is ready to lead the Terrapins on Saturday in their 2021 opener against West Virginia.

The brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Taulia still has a lot to prove, but he showed potential in last year's abbreviated season. In four games with the Terps, Tagovailoa averaged 253 yards passing per game, trailing only Michael Penix Jr. and Justin Fields in the Big Ten. He also completed 61.5% of his passes. "I take a lot of pride in being the leader of this football team," Tagovailoa said. "It comes with a lot of pressure, a lot of responsibility but - wouldn't have it no other way." The last time Maryland had a winning season was in 2014. That was also the last time the same quarterback started every game for the Terrapins. Tagovailoa didn't quite do that last season. - Washington Post

  08/21/21 - Jacob CopelandrSr/2023, Maryland, 5-11, 201 (DS#35 WR) + More +

With great power comes great responsibility. The same could be said for jersey No. 1 at the University of Florida. Some of the previous football players to wear No. 1 in orange and blue include safety Reggie Nelson (2006), receiver Percy Harvin (2007-08), defensive back Vernon Hargreaves III (2013-15) and, more recently, defensive back CJ Henderson (2019) and receiver Kadarius Toney (2019-20). Linebacker Brenton Cox Jr. wears No. 1 on defense. Besides all wearing No. 1 these former Gator stars have something else in common- they were all first-round NFL draft picks.

Hoping to live up to that standard this season will be redshirt junior Jacob Copeland. "It's a really big privilege and I feel like I'll be accountable for everything that comes with the number," said Copeland, who wore No. 1 at Pensacola Escambia High School. Copeland started 11 games last season and finished the year with 435 yards and three touchdowns. His 23 receptions, however, were good enough for sixth on the team behind All-Americans Toney (70), Kyle Pitts (43), Trevon Grimes (38), Malik Davis (31) and Justin Shorter (25). With the top three on that list now in the NFL, Copeland knows it is finally his time to shine. His former teammates agree. "I actually spoke with all of them yesterday, last night," he said. "Talking to me about camp, making sure everything all right, making sure my mindset ready to go into the season and let me know that you've got to stay focused because this a big year ahead of me." - Gainesville Sun

  08/15/21 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Tagovailoa led the conference in yards per completion (13.5), ranked second in passing efficiency (138.5) and yards per attempt (8.3), and finished third in total offense (263.8), but his decision-making at times proved costly, leading to seven interceptions. So the night before camp opened, Tagovailoa, following the program's player-first philosophy, requested to speak alone with his teammates, no coaches allowed. His remarks included the importance of sacrificing for one another and putting in as much extra work as possible. "Like Coach preaches all the time, no BCEs," Tagovailoa said, using the acronym for what Locksley calls "no b----ing, complaining or excuses." "Just working every day, so I look at my part as being a leader but also showing it. I feel like I'm less of a talker, but I do have to step into that role of being more vocal."

The players-only meeting was just one instance of Tagovailoa trying to elevate camaraderie. He also spoke exclusively with his wide receivers in another gathering, underscoring the importance of communication in the huddle. The Terrapins were second in the Big Ten last year in passing offense (264 yards per game) even with one of their top wide receivers, Jeshaun Jones, working his way back from an ACL injury. The junior played four games after missing all of 2019. - Washington Post

  08/02/21 - Jalil FarooqrSr/2026, Maryland, 6-1, 217 (DS#85 WR) + More +

With plenty of uncertainty around the wide receiver rotation entering the season, Farooq will have plenty of opportunity to work his way into a rotation spot. The four-star recruit from Maryland wasn't an early enrollee, so he'll have to make a quick impression if that is to happen. Farooq's versatility could have him used in several different ways, so he'll have his chance to find a role in 2021. - Daily Oklahoman

The University of Maryland announced Monday that junior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was named to the 85th annual Maxwell Award watch list. The award is given to the top player in the FBS regardless of position. Tagovailoa is the first Terp since former running back Anthony McFarland in 2019and first Maryland quarterback since Danny O'Brien in 2011 to make the Maxwell Award watch list. Tagovailoa appeared in four games for the Terps during the 2020 season, throwing for 1,011 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, led the Big Ten with 13.48 yards per completion. - Baltimore Sun
