  04/24/21 - Chigoziem OkonkwoSr/2022, Maryland, 6-3, 243 (DS#1 FB) + More +

When Locksley arrived in College Park from Alabama, there was much talk about how tight ends would be more incorporated in the offense than in previous seasons. In 2019, Okonkwo recorded 19 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns in eight games. The senior sat out the 2020 season with a medical condition he revealed last week to be myocarditis, which he suspects to be from contracting the coronavirus early last year. With Okonkwo sidelined and a thin position group, tight ends were once again nonexistent in the Terps' offense, recording just one catch in 2020. Maryland's skilled wide receiver group was able to make up for the absence of Okonkwo, but his presence, along with early enrollees C.J. Dippre and Weston Wolff, are expected to add more versatility to the offense. - Baltimore Sun

  04/23/21 - Tayon Fleet-DavisrSr/2022, Maryland, 6-0, 213 (DS#68 RB) + More +

Tayon Fleet-Davis's long wait began nearly a year and a half ago, when the Maryland football team had just two games remaining in Coach Michael Locksley's first season. In hindsight, Fleet-Davis says, "something I'd do differently is just staying home." But on that night in November he didn't, and the consequences of that choice stretched through a considerable portion of his career with the Terrapins. On a street that runs through campus, Fleet-Davis was pulled over by University of Maryland police and charged with driving a vehicle while impaired, reckless driving and other offenses. Locksley suspended Fleet-Davis, who continued practicing with the team but didn't play in those final two games of the 2019 season. Last year he appeared only once, in the season finale. In February, the state decided to not prosecute the charges, according to public judiciary logs.

Fleet-Davis will participate in Saturday's spring game and then begin his fifth season as a Terp in the fall. He's the veteran in the running backs room after showing flashes of potential during his sophomore and junior seasons. His role presumably would have grown last year, but he lost that opportunity. Now that he's back - preparing for a 12-game schedule rather than the shortened slate in 2020 - he says he has learned and grown over the past year. "You don't want to get in any trouble," said Fleet-Davis, who, until last week, had not been available to speak with reporters since the incident. "And I try to stay away from a lot of situations where I know that's not good for me. If I've got to ask myself twice, then it's probably not good for me. So just being smart and staying away from situations that you can avoid." - Washington Post

  12/29/20 - Jake FunkrSr/2021, Maryland, 5-10, 204 (DS#29 RB) + More +

Fifth-year senior Jake Funk, the Terps' lead running back, announced he will declare for the NFL draft. Funk played well in his limited opportunities this season after recovering from tearing his ACL both in 2018 and 2019. Maryland had only six scholarship seniors this season. Running back Tayon Fleet-Davis, who played only one game, and defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu, a regular contributor on the defensive line, were listed as seniors in 2020 but not honored at Maryland's senior day ceremony. Both could return for 2021. - Washington Post

  12/23/20 - Jake FunkrSr/2021, Maryland, 5-10, 204 (DS#29 RB) + More +

Jake Funk, a running back for the Maryland football team who enjoyed his most successful, albeit pandemic-shortened, season in his final year of eligibility, announced Monday afternoon that he intends to enter the NFL draft. The fifth-year senior declared for the draft on Twitter, writing: "It has always been a dream of mine to one day compete at the highest level of football and I'm excited to announce today that I'll be declaring for the 2021 NFL draft. I will truly miss my teammates, coaches and staff that have helped mold me into the man that I am today, but I couldn't be more thrilled for this opportunity."

The 5-foot-11, 202-pound Funk trailed only Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim of Baltimore in the Big Ten in average yards per game (129.0) and led the conference in yards per carry (8.6) while scoring three rushing touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 68 yards and one score. Funk, a Gaithersburg resident who set the Maryland state high school record for career touchdowns with 52 on 249 carries at Damascus High School in Montgomery County, rebounded from a torn ACL in his left knee in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019. He never gave up on his dream to serve as the Terps' primary ball carrier and capably filled the void created by the departures of Anthony McFarland (614 yards and eight touchdowns) and Javon Leake (736 yards and eight scores). - Baltimore Sun

  12/14/20 - Chad RylandrSr/2023, Maryland, 6-0, 190 (DS#2 K) + More +

DEC 14 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chad Ryland, Eastern Michigan, K, Junior, Lebanon, Pa. (Cedar Crest),...Ryland became Eastern Michigan's third all-time leader in made extra points (94) after he went 5-for-5 on PATs in EMU's victory over Northern Illinois, 41-33, Dec. 12. For Ryland, the five made extra points marked the second-consecutive game he's knocked in at least five PATs, and the sixth time he's accomplished the feat in his career. In addition to his five extra points, the Pennsylvania native nailed two field goals (39, 24) to topple the Huskies.

The pair of field goals extended his flawless kicking streak to nine-straight with his last miss being a 53-yard try against Ball State, Nov. 11. The Cedar Crest, Pa.-product ultimately earned 11 points for the Eagles against Northern Illinois, marking the third time in the six-game season that Ryland has notched at least 10 points. Previously, Ryland had only recorded a game of 10-plus points twice (Pittsburgh, 2019, and Northern Illinois, 2018). Ryland also recorded his first-ever punt on a fake field goal attempt during the NIU contest. The 37-yard boot caught Northern Illinois off-guard, as he pinned the Huskies at their own one-yard line. - MAC Football

  12/11/20 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

After spending a year at Alabama, Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, transferred to Maryland and has gone through some ups and downs this season. He's 75-of-122 for 1,011 yards and seven touchdowns, and he's also thrown seven interceptions. Tagovailoa is third in the Big Ten in passing yards, but he also can be elusive with his feet. It'll be a challenge for Rutgers' defense. "I think the quarterback is dangerous," Schiano said. "He's dangerous but with his arm and with his feet. I think when he went into the portal, there was talk, 'How good is he?' Well, I can tell you, he's real good. He's a good passer. He's very good with his feet." - Asbury Park Press

  11/29/20 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Maryland (2-2) quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa actually didn't look rusty early, pushing multiple Maryland drives deep into IU territory to start. Indiana's defense did enough to stop him, grabbing a pair of interceptions before the intermission. But Tagovailoa still had 162 yards passing at half, though he'd completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes. The Hoosiers' game plan on that side of the ball developed slowly, soft coverage on the outside shifting as the game wore on. Pressure started to bother him in the second quarter and really ratcheted up in the third. At the same time, that soft coverage became tighter, forcing Tagovailoa to hold the ball longer than he should have. His third pick came after a sack made by good coverage got the Maryland sophomore jumpy enough to force a bad pass over the middle right to a waiting Micah McFadden. The Hoosiers scored off that interception to take a 27-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter, and salt the game away. - Indianapolis Star/News

  11/07/20 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Maryland coach Mike Locksley grew up rooting for the team he now coaches, so he's intimately aware of all the beatings the Terps have taken year after year from Penn State. Knowing that makes performances like the one Taulia Tagovailoa and the Terps turned in during their 35-19 win over regional rival Penn State on Saturday all that more special. Tagovailoa competed 18 of 26 passes for 282 yards and three touchdown passes.

Rakim Jarrett caught five passes for 144 yards with a pair of touchdowns, Dontay Demus caught another and Jake Funk added 80 rushing yards and a score for the Terps (2-1, 2-1 Big Ten Conference), who won for just the third time in the 44-game series and first since 2015. "Great team win," Locksley said. "I'm just so happy for those players in that locker room. I'm happy for the former Terp football players that have endured us not playing competitively with (Penn State)." The Nittany Lions have outscored Maryland 163-6 over the last three meetings. Sean Clifford completed 27 of 57 passes for 340 yards with two interceptions and three touchdowns for Penn State, which fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2001. - AP College Football

  11/05/20 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

The weekend was a successful one for the Tagovailoa family. Not only did Taulia become only the third player in the last 20 Big Ten seasons to post 350 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and two rushing scores in a single game - for which he shared the conference's Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors with Ohio State junior quarterback Justin Fields - but older brother Tua also won in his first start as quarterback of the Miami Dolphins.

"Obviously happy for Tua," said Locksley, who coached him at Alabama. "It was a well-deserved opportunity for him and for him to do well, but even more excited for Lia in that he was able to play the way we thought he was capable of playing. Now the goal is to get that type of effort from him consistently, which we expect and will hopefully continue to see out of him. But I was definitely excited for Lia and excited for Tua to be able to get a start and get his first win in the NFL. So I was happy for both of those guys." - Baltimore Sun

  11/03/20 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa looked like a different player Friday night in his home debut. He bore no resemblance to the rattled sophomore who struggled last week in the Terps' opener, instead keeping his composure and proving, in a thrilling 45-44 win over Minnesota, he is more than just the younger brother of Tua. Tagovailoa led a stunning fourth-quarter rally, bringing the Terps back from a 17-point deficit to force overtime. In the extra period, his two-yard run (and Joseph Petrino's kick) gave Maryland a seven-point lead. The Golden Gophers scored on their first overtime possession, but Brock Walker's extra point floated wide right at Capital One Field, and the Terps had their first win - and Tagovailoa's first as the team's starting quarterback. "We showed a lot of grit, a lot of fight and a lot of perseverance to come off a loss like that and for our team to just continue to fight," Tagovailoa said. "… It just shows the type of team we have. Hopefully we can build on this."

Tagovailoa played with poise and precision in the game's decisive moment. He opened the Terps' overtime drive with a 12-yard pass to Jeshaun Jones, and he closed it with the scoring run, the fifth touchdown he accounted for on the evening. Tagovailoa completed 26 of 35 passes for 394 yards with three touchdowns. He also ran eight times for 59 yards and two scores. He had an interception in the second quarter on a tipped ball but navigated pressure with ease throughout the night, playing from behind for all but the final minutes of the second half. "Last week was more of a surprise for us than what we saw this week," Maryland Coach Michael Locksley said, "because these are the same type of plays and throws and energy he has brought to the table, which is why he earned the position. It was great to see him bounce back." - Baltimore Sun
