Laborn is the sole scholarship FSU running back on the 2020 roster who was on the team last season. The former No. 1 all-purpose back in the 2017 recruiting class, he's been overshadowed by Akers throughout his FSU career. Now would seem to be a time for the former five-star recruit to shine. His play-making ability is among the best on the team -- look no further than his sideline-to-sideline run after catch vs. Virginia Tech in 2018 -- but he's been hindered by injuries and off-field issues during his FSU career.

In 2019, he ran for 297 yards and four touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 66 yards while backing up Akers, but he missed the final two games of the season after he was suspended for a violation of team rules. A fresh start under a new coaching staff may be just what someone like Laborn needs. He remains supremely talented and would be a big boost to the FSU offense in 2020 if he's ready to take over a big role and the responsibilities that come with it. - Times Union

Marshall sophomore wide receiver Talik Keaton is no stranger to big plays. His first collegiate touch in a Marshall uniform was a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against VMI that continued his play from spring and fall that made him one of the players to watch in 2019. However, injuries plagued Keaton's redshirt freshman season and limited his productivity as a wide receiver, which is where Marshall expected him to shine, especially with early injuries to Obi Obialo and Artie Henry. With a long layoff due to COVID-19, Keaton is back to full strength and expected to contribute as a major playmaker for the team.

Keaton comes back as the top return man in Conference USA, but for Marshall to succeed, Keaton has to become a consistent performer in the receiving game with quarterback Isaiah Green. The spring and preseason featured consistent plays from Keaton that had expectations high for the 2019 season, but nagging ailments limited him to nine catches for 140 yards and one touchdown, which came in the win over Rice. "When he was playing last year, he wasn't playing 100 percent," Marshall offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey said. "When he had opportunities to make plays for us, he did, so I'm expecting huge things from Talik." Keaton's skill set is one of the most versatile on Marshall's roster, so much so that he took repetitions on both the outside and at slot receiver. - Charleston Gazette

Damion Barber, a Penn State defensive tackle, announced Monday on Twitter that he has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Barber was a redshirt junior, and is no longer listed on Penn State's football roster, and his player page was removed from the athletics website. The former four-star prospect from Harrisburg played in eight games during the 2019 season, totaling three tackles. As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Barber appeared in three games. - Centre Times

Penn State football will be replacing several long-term starters next season, with two of those departures - defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos and cornerback John Reid - heavily affecting the pass defense. Those spots will need to be filled effectively for Penn State to regain its 2019 form on that side of the ball. Two players in particular, both seniors, plan on showing they're more than capable of doing the job. Shane Simmons, while easy to overlook because of the youth at defensive end, is ready to help fill Gross-Matos' shoes while Tariq Castro-Fields wants to prove his high-level cornerback play from early last season was no fluke.

"This is a really important year for me," Simmons said in a teleconference with the media Wednesday afternoon. "This is a very important season for me." Simmons has appeared in 34 games in his four seasons on campus but has tallied only one career sack. The redshirt senior knows his time hasn't gone as planned, especially considering he was a five-star recruit out of high school, but he's ready to put that behind him. "The story isn't finished yet," he said. "I still believe I can leave my mark at Penn State." - Centre Times

A Penn State football player accused in a federal lawsuit of sexually hazing a former teammate denied the "broad, bald" allegations lodged against him. Junior defensive tackle Damion Barber joined coach James Franklin and the university in asking a federal judge to throw out the lawsuit filed by former Nittany Lion Isaiah Humphries. Humphries alleged Barber was among a group of four players who orchestrated a campaign to haze underclassmen as a form of initiation into the team's program. The allegations include Humphries' former teammates stealing clothes, simulating humping actions, grabbing the genitalia of others and placing their genitals on others while naked in the Lasch Building showers. Barber "is not aware of, never witnessed any, and did not participate in" any initiation rituals to become or remain a member of the football team, his attorney Anthony De Boef wrote in his response filed Tuesday.

The allegations outlined in Humphries' lawsuit were investigated by the university's sexual misconduct and prevention office, which received an anonymous complaint six months after Humphries transferred to the California Golden Bears. The complaint was not submitted by Humphries. It was submitted by someone else who reported the "harassment and victimization" of a second football player, Humphries' attorney Steven Marino said in March. Barber admitted he was charged with violating the harassment clause laid out in the university's student conduct policy, but said his actions were not directed at Humphries. - Centre Times

Marshall center Levi Brown was always known as one of the more outlandish personalities within the Herd's football program. On each of his biceps, he had each of his names - one arm "Levi," one arm "Brown." And he loved to joke around and flex with teammates and opponents to show them exactly who blocked them, whether in practice or games. Brown was also known for his easy-going, wild and fun personality. During television timeouts, it was not uncommon for Brown to start dancing on the field. Normally, it would take something completely beyond the realm of normal to catch Brown by surprise. As he prepares for the 2020 NFL Draft, though, even Brown can't believe the situation at hand, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Wild times, man," Brown said. "This is just wild. Everything is so weird because all the training facilities are closed down due to the virus."

Brown was one of many Marshall seniors who came in for the Herd's Pro Day festivities on March 11. In the Chris Cline Athletic Complex, Brown showcased his skills for many NFL and professional scouts who were in attendance. He and his teammates at Marshall were among the last in college football to have an organized Pro Day in front of NFL scouts before the landscape of sports - and the world in general - changed. "Actually being able to get my Pro Day in, it makes it easier," Brown said. "A lot of schools haven't been able to do that." In another sense, though, Brown - like so many other college athletes - is unlucky. The 2020 NFL Draft class will be the first in recent memory that will be hindered by limited ability to get in front of interested teams. The draft, which takes place April 23-25, is also going to a virtual format with teams not even being allowed within their own facilities. - Charleston Gazette

With the 2020 NFL draft just more than a month away, football players trying to improve their draft stock got a chance to work out before professional scouts on Wednesday at the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Facility on the campus of Marshall University. Few may have improved their stock more than Marshall linebacker Omari Cobb. The 6-4, 223-pound Port St. Lucie, Florida, native turned in a 40-yard dash time of 4.74 - or 4.73 depending on which scout's time you use. Cobb also had a vertical jump of 37 inches, a broad jump of 10 feet and benched 21 reps of 225-pounds in front of scouts from 10 NFL teams that included Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Cobb's impressive pro day puts him one step closer to realizing his professional football dreams with the NFL draft coming on April 23-25 in Las Vegas.

"I was excited for my numbers and felt pretty good about them," Cobb said. "I'm hard on myself and I'm my biggest critic. I think I did pretty well but I really feel like I can go out there and do a little better. Overall, I feel I did great." Cobb was joined by 17 other Thundering Herd teammates plus two players from Shepherd University in participating in the workout.
