Khalan Laborn ran for 151 yards with two touchdowns, the Marshall defense did not allow a point after the first quarter, and the Thundering Herd defeated James Madison 26-12 on Saturday. Laborn has surpassed 100 yards on the ground in every game and now has 1,002 for the season. Laborn's 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter drew Marshall within 12-9 and his 18-yard run capped the scoring in the fourth quarter. In between, Cam Fancher passed to Corey Gammage for a 57-yard touchdown and Rece Verhoff added a 38-yard field goal. Fancher completed 15 of 31 passes for 159 yards, the one touchdown and two interceptions for Marshall (4-3, 1-2 Sun Belt). On homecoming day, James Madison's Billy Atkins was 13 of 35 passing for 164 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions.   Henry Colombi threw two first-half touchdown passes, Khalan Laborn ran for two scores in the second half and Marshall rolled to a 28-7 victory over FCS-member Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Colombi connected with A.J. Turner for a 24-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Marshall lead, but freshman Ty Anderson picked off a Colombi pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7 after one quarter. Marshall (3-2) took a 14-7 lead into halftime when Colombi passed to Corey Gammage for a 10-yard score with 5:48 left in the second quarter. Laborn's 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pushed the Thundering Herd's lead to 21-7. He ended the scoring with a 78-yard run on first down in the final period. Laborn finished with a career-high 191 yards on 35 carries. Colombi completed 13 of 20 passes for 138 yards.   Steven Gilmore returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and Khalan Labron ran for 163 yards as Marshall shocked No. 8 Notre Dame 26-21 on Saturday, making Marcus Freeman the first Fighting Irish coach to lose his first three games. Gilmore, the brother of Stephon Gilmore of the Indianapolis Colts, picked off a pass by Tyler Buchner with 4:35 left, raced to the end zone and then jumped into the stands where Marshall fans were already celebrating. Marshall (2-0), the first Sun Belt Conference team to play at Notre Dame Stadium, beat a team ranked in the top 10 for just the second time in school history. The Irish had a streak of 42 straight wins against unranked opponents snapped. Freeman, the 36-yeard-old first-time head coach who was promoted after Brian Kelly left for LSU, had lost a bowl game to Oklahoma State and also lost at Ohio State last week. - Marshall/AP College Football

Notre Dame fans could live with the Fighting Irish being overpowered in the fourth quarter against then-No. 2 Ohio State. Being pushed around by Marshall is a different story. Notre Dame Stadium is supposed to be a place to shake down the thunder, not where the Thundering Herd celebrate a 26-21 victory. The eighth-ranked Irish led 15-12 when Tyler Buchner ran in for a 1-yard run to open the fourth quarter Saturday, then added a 2-point conversion. It all went downhill from there for Notre Dame (0-2). Marcus Freeman is now the first Irish coach to open his career 0-3.

Freeman, the 36-year-old, first-time head coach, was asked whether his inexperience coaching was a factor in the poor start. "If it's my experience as head coach, and I don't know if that's a reason why, or the lack of execution? But it starts with me, right? It starts with me as the head coach and looking at myself and saying, ‘What do I have to do to help this football team and really look at everything we're doing?' Because the performance isn't where we needed to be," he said. Steven Gilmore returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and Khalan Labron ran for 163 yards as Marshall shocked the Irish. Gilmore, the brother of Stephon Gilmore of the Indianapolis Colts, picked off a pass by Tyler Buchner with 4:35 left, raced to the end zone and then jumped into the stands where Marshall fans were already celebrating the victory. - Marshall/AP College Football

Ethan Payne and Khalan Laborn both went over 100 yards rushing with two touchdowns each and Marshall routed FCS-member Norfolk State 55-3 on Saturday. Payne led with 113 yards on 10 carries and Laborn added 12 carries for 102 yards as the Thundering Herd piled up 380 yards on the ground. Payne and Laborn helped soften the absence of Rasheen Ali, one of the nation's top freshmen last season, who took a leave of absence last month for undisclosed reasons. Henry Colombi was 24-of-26 passing for 205 yards and Marshall finished with 612 yards total offense with 33 first downs. On defense, the Herd held the Spartans to 114 yards and five first downs. Five players scored touchdowns for Marshall, including defensive lineman Owen Porter who had a 21-yard fumble return. Despite the lopsided score, Norfolk State stuck to its ground game but netted only 30 yards on 31 carries. Quarterbacks Jaylan Adams and Otto Kuhns combined to go 6-for-14 for 84 yards. - Marshall/AP College Football

Mitch Griffis threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start and Christian Turner and Taylor Morin added spectacular individual efforts on scores, helping No. 22 Wake Forest beat VMI 44-10 on Thursday night in the opener for both teams. Griffis started with veteran Sam Hartman sidelined indefinitely by a non-football medical issue. Hartman - who guided the Demon Deacons to last year's Atlantic Coast Conference championship game - was on the sideline in his black jersey, black shorts and a black cap to watch his understudy lead an easy win against a Championship Subdivision opponent. Griffis' first TD throw was a perfect ball while moving to his right, with Morin diving just inside the right end-zone sideline for the 23-yard score and a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

Turner had preceded that with his own highlight-reel TD. He appeared headed for a modest gain when he was wobbled by a hit from Aljareek Malry in a crowd near the middle of the field. But Turner extended his left hand into the grass to stay on his feet, then popped free on the left side for a 35-yard TD. Both scores stood after replay reviews. Turner ran for 100 yards and two scores in the game to lead the Demon Deacons, who had 506 total yards but also committed seven penalties for 70 yards. VMI, from the Southern Conference, sought its first win against a nationally ranked opponent from the Bowl Subdivision ranks. Its lone offensive highlight was Grant Swinehart taking a pass from backup QB Collin Ironside and sprinting down the right side for a 34-yard touchdown - though that came with Wake Forest leading 30-3 late in the third. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Florida State coach Mike Norvell said redshirt sophomore linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. would miss the 2022-23 season with an undisclosed injury. The Dr. Phillips product appeared in 21 games (5 starts) during his two seasons with the Seminoles, totaling 59 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. He played in all 12 games last season with 14 tackles and one pass breakup. "Stephen has been a great player and teammate in regards to the things that he's had to go through and things he's had to work [through]," said Norvell. "He's responded to a lot of adversity that's shown up over the last couple of years. He played a ton as a true freshman and last year was more in a limited role. "It's one of those things that's just a part of the game, but it's going to continue to call on some of the younger guys." Dix wasn't listed on FSU's projected 2-deep depth chart for Saturday's game against Duquesne. - Orlando Sentinel

Marshall running back Rasheen Ali will be away from the Thundering Herd indefinitely as he deals with an unidentified issue. Ali earned first-team All-Conference USA and Freshman All-America honors after leading the nation in rushing touchdowns as a freshman. Ali ranked among the top running backs in the country during his breakout redshirt freshman season. He carried the ball 250 times for 1,401 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns, both marks that finished top 10 nationally. Ali was expected to be a dark horse All-America candidate in 2022.

"As soon as he is mentally, physically and emotionally ready to return, he will be back," Marshall coach Charles Huff said in a statement. "Our team and staff are doing a great job of supporting him and we are looking forward to getting him back soon. We do not have an anticipated return date at this time. When we do, we will let everyone know. Out of privacy and respect for Rasheen and his family, we will not comment further on this topic until he is back with us." - CBSSports.com

Marshall running back Rasheen Ali, one of the nation's top freshman rushers last season, is taking a leave of absence for undisclosed reasons, coach Charles Huff said Tuesday. Ali's exit comes less than two weeks before Marshall opens the season Sept. 3 at home against Norfolk State of the Football Championship Subdivision. Ali rushed for 1,401 yards and 23 touchdowns last season and was expected to be a big part of the offense again as Marshall enters its first season in the Sun Belt Conference. No timetable was given for Ali's return. - AP College Football

Life without Sam Hartman, one of the best returning quarterbacks in the ACC who is out indefinitely with an undisclosed injury, has continued for Wake Forest. That continuation will include redshirt freshman Mitch Griffis, who has taken the reigns of the offense and showed what he could do in a spirited full-team scrimmage on Thursday night at Truist Field. Griffis and Michael Kern, a redshirt sophomore, took the majority of the snaps as Coach Dave Clawson's team gets ready for its Sept. 1 opener against VMI. "I thought Mitch was a lot more settled," Clawson said of the scrimmage, which took place exactly two weeks from the opener. "And Michael Kern is a great athlete and he's always going to make plays with his feet. I just think that every time Mitch is out there (with the first team) he gets a lot more comfortable." No official statistics were kept during the very controlled scrimmage, in which tackling was scaled back, but Griffis was 12 of 15 for 215 yards with two short touchdown passes to Taylor Morin and Ke'Shawn Williams. On the 2-yard touchdown pass to Williams, Williams made a brilliant one-handed grab. - Winston Salem Journal

By this point in his college football career, Henry Colombi has learned to adjust to his surroundings. Now in his sixth fall camp as a college quarterback, and playing at his third school in the same time period, "new" isn't exactly new for the most experienced quarterback on Marshall's roster. "You can clearly see he's got a veteran presence. Nothing rattles him, nothing gets him off-kilter," Marshall head coach Charles Huff said. "He's been through a college camp before, and even though it's not this one, you kind of know the routine." As a freshman, Colombi had to adjust to college football in general. After three years at Utah State, he then had to reorient himself when he transferred to Texas Tech. So when he made the decision to transfer to Marshall, he knew, at least in a general sense, what to expect as he settled in with new teammates and coaches around him. - Charleston Gazette
