Everybody knows who Rasheen Ali is. After rushing for 1,401 yards and scoring 23 touchdowns in 2021 and making one award watch list after another during the 2022 preseason, Marshall University's star redshirt sophomore is increasingly well known. What people don't realize, however, is who that person actually is underneath the No. 22 jersey. Want to know? Get ready for a surprise, because Ali is one of the most thoughtful, introspective and self-aware athletes anyone ever will encounter. Ask him, for example, about all the watch lists and preseason honors Ali already has received in 2022. "It feels good, honestly, just knowing the work I've put in," said Ali. "It's not just me. I'm putting the work in with my teammates, my brothers. The work that we all put in - the offensive line - just trusting everybody. "It feels good just knowing that we all did it as a unit because I couldn't do it without them. So, it's really important that I just keep implementing it and just keep pushing each other each and every day. "I feel good about the honors, but I know at the end of the day that I couldn't get it without them, so I'm just super-appreciative of them."

Yet the key to Ali's success on the field is what he does off the field. It is called affirmations. "Affirmations is really just speaking stuff into existence, writing stuff down," explained Ali. "I'm always taking notes and just jot down how I felt that day and what I want to work on that day, how I want to feel tomorrow...I just really write about my day. "I really have a whole vision board and everything. It's hard to explain, but I have a vision board with all the goals I have. I did it last year and last year I missed. I had every goal except some money that I wanted to invest. I hit every goal but that. "I really just try to speak stuff into existence because your worry and your thoughts are your power. So, really just thinking about it and affirming it and really just owning what I believe in is really just a big impact on what I do." - Charleston Gazette

For the final time in his college football career, Marshall defensive lineman Koby Cumberlander walked into the room to meet with media prior to the start of preseason camp, boasting an ear-to-ear smile as he walked to the podium. "Can't believe it's the last one," said the sixth-year senior. "I've been very blessed to spend my time in Huntington where the people are absolutely amazing. It's a place I'll cherish forever. I'm just ready to get out there with the boys one last time." The school at which he has spent the past five years really was never on his list of preferred destinations. The Roswell, Georgia, native originally wished to play in a town far north of where he landed. "I never would have imagined being in Huntington ever in my life," Cumberlander said. "I had plans of playing in Michigan, going to Michigan State, but I'm glad I chose the right choice of coming here because the people here are amazing."

He redshirted in 2017, and with each year that passed he found himself on the field more often than the last and enters his final year as one of the key pillars of the Thundering Herd defense. "It's been a wild journey but it's been fun. Very, very fun," Cumberlander said. "From the past coaches and even the coaches now, I appreciate everything they've done." It means something to the coaching staff, too. "Koby could have walked away and went about his life. He could have chased the NFL but he chose to come back," Marshall coach Charles Huff said. "I think that says a lot about his love for this place, his teammates and his love for what he does." - Charleston Gazette

Verdis Brown flipped back to defensive line ahead of the season after spending 2020 and 2019 on the offensive line. Brown as a guard, of course, came after he arrived at Illinois as ... a defensive lineman. Brown played in eight games last fall, filling a backup role behind Roderick Perry II and Calvin Avery at what was generally one defensive tackle spot in coordinator Ryan Walters' defense. The Chicago native finished his first full season on the defensive line with four tackles in his limited playing time.

There's a Perry-sized hole to fill in the Illinois defensive line. Perry didn't have outlandish counting stats (26 tackles, including two for loss, in 11 games), but that's not the primary purpose for a nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme. Disruption was Perry's strength, and he had the ability to cause havoc. That's what Brown has to show he's capable of doing, too, to secure more substantial playing time in his fourth season. - News Gazette Tribune

July 1 marked the official start of the Sun Belt Conference's expansion with James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss joining the conference. The official begin of the "new" Sun Belt marks the culmination of months of rumors, threats and drama that surrounded the decision for the four schools to jump to the Sun Belt. In 2021, three of the four schools announced they would be entering the conference following the 2022-2023 athletic seasons, while James Madison planned to join in July from the beginning. Things changed, however, as Southern Miss, Old Dominion and Marshall informed Conference-USA that they intended to also join the Sun Belt by July 1. The C-USA refused to accept the schools' departure and even released conference schedules for the 2022 football season including the three schools.

Marshall University then filed a lawsuit against the C-USA with the conference shortly thereafter agreeing to allow the schools depart for the Sun Belt early. In order to leave the C-USA early, the schools agreed to pay the conference $2 million for the early departure. Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss and James Madison's move to the Sun Belt expands the conference's reach into new states, adding West Virginia, Virginia and Mississippi. "We are excited to officially welcome James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss as members of the Sun Belt Conference," Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill said. "This expansion to 14 members - and the regional rivalries it produces - makes the 2022-2023 academic year one of the most anticipated in Sun Belt history and signals the bright future that lies ahead of the conference." - The Troy Messenger

Henry Colombi's college football career will end in Huntington, capping a long journey that has come with several twists and turns ahead of what will ultimately serve as his sixth and final year as a college quarterback. Colombi, a transfer from Texas Tech University, where he spent two seasons, has officially joined the Marshall football program after receiving his diploma from Texas Tech earlier this month. Prior to his time with the Red Raiders, Colombi spent three seasons at Utah State.

While he wasn't able to participate in Marshall football's spring practice and scrimmage game, Colombi was able to observe at a distance, getting a feel for the offense just through watching practice throughout the spring. Now he's officially a part of the Thundering Herd and is eager to hit the ground running. "It feels great," Colombi said. "I think being here in the spring has definitely helped me and helped the team build our chemistry, just being around the guys and letting them know what being a leader is. It feels good to finally be a officially part of the team and get rolling." Colombi is, by far, the most experienced quarterback on the Marshall roster, joining a group of five freshman who participated in spring ball and 2022 recruit Cole Pennington arriving this summer. In two years with the Red Raiders, Colombi appeared in 13 games and started nine. - Charleston Gazette

Marshall football head coach Charles Huff continues to utilize the transfer portal for one of the key areas of need on the offensive side of the ball, adding a second former Power Five lineman to the mix Thursday. Tim Lawson, who spent the last two seasons with the Louisville Cardinals, announced his commitment to the Thundering Herd on social media Thursday morning. Lawson adds to a running list of transfer portal pickups for Marshall and is the second offensive lineman to transfer from a Power Five program after ex-Rutgers big man Cedrice Paillant, who committed in mid-April.

For Lawson, the decision was easy, but multiple factors played in to his decision, including good first impressions by the coaching staff, Marshall's proven ability to produce NFL-caliber offensive linemen and familiarity with the offensive scheme. Listed at 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds, Lawson adds a good deal of size to the offensive line and said he believes his experience at Louisville will translate well in Huntington. "I'm used to the game now. I'm used to college football," Lawson said. "I had my times where I seen how fast the game moves, and pretty much the same way how the offense is here, they pretty much run there at Marshall." A native of Fort Washington, Maryland, Lawson committed to Louisville after graduating from the National Christian Academy and spent two seasons with the Cardinals without appearing in any games. - Charleston Gazette

Another former Marshall football player has now signed with a team in the National Football League. After receiving an invite to the Buffalo Bills rookie mini camp tryout, Will Ulmer has signed an undrafted free agent deal and will join the team this week as organized team activities (OTAs) begin. Ulmer, who holds the record for most starts (57) at Marshall, didn't hear his name called in the 2022 NFL Draft and said that it tested his faith in many ways. But it wasn't long until an invitation to rookie minicamp tryouts began to show up. "Initially I thought it was Green Bay, then that fell through. Then it was the Chiefs and I went and did their rookie minicamp this past weekend, and then it was the Buffalo Bills," Ulmer said. "I came up here and found some success with it." - Charleston Gazette

Historically, the state of Florida has been a recruiting hotbed for the Marshall Thundering Herd football team, and that doesn't appear to be slowing down. Marshall picked up a commitment by Jadarius Green-McKnight on Tuesday, making him the third transfer to join the Herd from Florida State University this offseason. Wide receiver Bryan Robinson and running back Khalan Laborn were the first two ex-Seminoles to arrive at Marshall, doing so before spring practice began as they settled into their new roles.

Green-McKnight appeared in seven games in two years for the Seminoles, seeing action in the final five games of the 2020 season and was limited to just two appearances in the final two games of last season. He has recorded one tackle and arrives at Marshall with three years of eligibility remaining. A four-star recruit out of Dunbar High School in Florida, Green-McKnight was the No. 25-ranked safety in the country and No. 35 overall prospect in the state of Florida. He chose FSU over Miami, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Auburn, among others, according to 247 Sports. He entered the portal on April 21 and committed to the Herd just 12 days later. - Charleston Gazette

As Khalan Laborn bounced off a tackle and finished off a 32-yard touchdown run on the final play of Marshall football's Green and White Game, it was a fitting end to the spring season for the Thundering Herd's running backs. Behind Rasheen Ali, Marshall's leading rusher of over 1,400 yards from last season, there's a handful of running backs looking to be the second guy in the one-two punch at tailback. A mix of Laborn, a sixth-year transfer, redshirt freshman Anthony James and true freshmen A.J. Turner and Isaiah Gordon made their impressions last Saturday, with Laborn seeing the most action of the four. They combined to carry the ball 19 times for 104 yards, without help from Ali or Ethan Payne, neither of whom saw snaps in the Green and White Game. "They've probably grown as much as the quarterbacks," Marshall coach Charles Huff said of the group. - Charleston Gazette
