Micale Cunningham passed for a career-best five of six touchdowns accounted for, including a 14-yarder with 1:24 remaining to seal Louisville's 56-34 victory over Syracuse on Saturday. Cunningham passed for three TDs and rushed for a 20-yard score in the first half alone on a cold, misty afternoon. The sophomore added a 28-yard scoring pass early in the third, one of several the Cardinals needed during a wild second half in which the schools alternated touchdowns three times. The sophomore's final TD pass might have been his most critical for Louisville (7-4, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) as Syracuse tried to rally. The Orange turned it over twice on downs deep in Louisville territory, with the last ending on three consecutive penalties and a failed a fourth-down pass at the 3.

Javian Hawkins' 47-yard run set up Cunningham's 14-yard TD pass to Tutu Atwell as the bowl-bound Cardinals capped conference play with another victory in their turnaround season. They also ended the postseason prospects for Syracuse (4-7, 1-6) a season after the Orange won 10 games including a bowl. "We were able to get that ball back and then the offense, we take off five, almost six minutes and score a touchdown," Cardinals coach Scott Satterfield said. "That's how you win ball games, and it was a great team effort." Cunningham completed 11 of 20 passes for 238 yards and rushed eight times for 60. Micale Cunningham threw four TD passes as Louisville clinched bowl eligibility Saturday night with a 34-20 win over N.C. State. The big-play passing game of Louisville (6-4, 4-3 ACC) proved too much to handle for an N.C. State team missing its top five cornerbacks because of injury. Cunningham completed scoring passes of 43 yards to Dez Fitzpatrick, 74 yards to Tutu Atwell and 42 yards to Marshon Ford.

N.C. State (4-6, 1-5), which has five starters overall out for the season due to injury, led 10-7 at halftime after a 15-yard, second-quarter scoring pass from Devin Leary to Emeka Emezie, but gave up two touchdowns in the first 2:30 of the third quarter to fall behind by a double-digit margin. Louisville has a reputation for big gains in the passing game as Cunningham and speedy wideouts Atwell and Fitzpatrick have stretched defenses vertically all season. Shai Werts threw for one touchdown, ran for two and the defense came up with three turnovers as Georgia Southern rolled to a 51-29 win over Louisiana Monroe on Saturday. Werts had touchdown runs of 11 and 24 yards and a 33-yard connection with Darion Anderson to put the Eagles on top 24-7 at halftime. Donald Rutledge Jr. had a 42-yard interception return in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, which made it 38-14. The Warhawks scored twice in the fourth quarter but each time Georgia Southern responded, including a 42-yard return by Monquavion Brinson on an onside kick attempt in the final minute. The Eagles (6-4, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) were outgained 370-325 in total offense. J.D. King had 102 yards rushing and a 6-yard touchdown run in the closing minute of the third quarter. 2019 JERRY RICE AWARD WATCH LIST: Tyler Hudson, WR, Central Arkansas: 38 receptions, 687 yards, 8 TDs (9 games),...Hudson, a freshman from Spring, Texas, and Klein Oak High school, was one of 24 FCS players across the nation named to the list. The Rice Award is named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver and has been presented since 2011 to the Division I FCS freshman player of the year. Hudson has started all nine games for the 6th-ranked Bears and has hauled in 38 receptions for 687 yards and eight touchdowns in his rookie season. Hudson is coming off a three-touchdown game in UCA's 45-17 road victory over the Lamar Cardinals last Saturday.

Hudson had career highs of 10 receptions for 140 yards the previous week in UCA's 29-25 win over Top 25 Sam Houston State at First Security Field at Estes Stadium. He has had more than 100 receiving yards in four games this season, and scored multiple touchdowns twice. Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer is expected to miss the rest of this season with a broken right ankle. The opening-day starter, Elijah Sindelar, is unlikely to return because of a broken left collarbone. The Boilermakers are asking former walk-on, Aidan O'Connell, to keep their long-shot bowl hopes alive. Coach Jeff Brohm fully believes O'Connell can do the job. "He's a guy I think can execute the offense. I think he'll stand there and try to make the throw and sit in that pocket and do the best he can," Brohm said Monday. "We've got to play to his strengths and help him get into rhythm and get completions. I think extending the play and getting yards with his feet is not his strength." Clearly, the Boilermakers (3-6, 2-4 Big Ten) face an uphill battle. They must win their final three games to become bowl-eligible, a stretch run that begins Saturday with what appears to be a winnable game at reeling Northwestern (1-7, 0-6). Auburn backup quarterback Joey Gatewood has left the team and plans to transfer. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said Wednesday Gatewood opted to enter the NCAA's transfer portal to give himself more time to find a school to compete for a starting job. Malzahn says Gatewood informed him of his decision before Tuesday's practice. No. 11 Auburn hosts Mississippi Saturday night. The 6-foot-5, 233-pound redshirt freshman lost a battle for the starting job to freshman Bo Nix. Gatewood is a former four-star recruit from Jacksonville, Florida. He has played in seven games and been used at times as a Wildcat quarterback, running for 148 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for a fourth score. Former minor league baseball player Cord Sandberg will move up to second-team. Sandberg has only attempted one pass in his two seasons. Louisville says kicker Blanton Creque will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. Creque's injury, sustained while attempting a tackle late in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 28-21 victory against Virginia, also ends the collegiate career of the Cardinals' most accurate kicker (82.3%). The senior will undergo surgery in the next couple of weeks. Creque made 8 of 11 field goals and all 33 extra-point attempts for 57 points this season. His 51 field goals on 62 attempts and 310 career points both rank third in program history. Creque's 41-yard field goal that helped Louisville edge Boston College 41-39 on Oct. 5 was one of two game-winners with the Cardinals. With Heisman Trophy-winning predecessor Lamar Jackson observing, Louisville quarterback Micale Cunningham showed his own ability for creating excitement with his arm and feet. Cardinals running back Javian Hawkins and an opportunistic defense also made their marks in a hard-earned victory over Virginia. Cunningham and Hawkins accounted for two touchdowns apiece, including one each in the fourth quarter, and Louisville made a final defensive stand to hold off the Cavaliers 28-21 on Saturday.

Getting there required rallying twice, including a 14-7 halftime deficit in which the Cardinals (5-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) started Cunningham for one quarter before switching to freshman Evan Conley in the second for a different pace. Cunningham was back in the pocket after halftime and delivered a Jackson-like clutch performance. The sophomore completed 6 of 10 passes for 126 yards, most coming on a shovel pass to Tutu Atwell for a 77-yard touchdown that marked career bests for both players and a season high for Louisville. Cunningham carried 11 times for 97 yards including a 48-yarder overshadowed by an even bigger play that put Louisville ahead for good. - Louisville/AP College Football
