Louisville coach Scott Satterfield says that top cover corner Kei'Trel Clark will miss the remainder of this season after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament during Saturday night's Atlantic Coast Conference loss at North Carolina State. Satterfield announced the sophomore cornerback's diagnosis during his weekly news conference on Monday. He said Clark underwent an MRI and will have surgery on the knee. Clark had emerged into one of the ACC's top cover players and led the conference with 12 passes defended, including three interceptions. He's the third Cardinals starter lost to a season-ending injury, following linebacker Monty Montgomery and receiver Braden Smith. Satterfield said Clark's injury "is a tough blow for us" and added that Louisville counted on him a lot.   Sophomore quarterback Harrison Bailey is leaving Tennessee after finding himself third on the depth chart under first-year coach Josh Heupel. Bailey announced his decision Wednesday in a social media post. "It's with a heavy heart, I would like to announce that I will be entering my name into the transfer portal and exploring other opportunities," Bailey wrote. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound QB from Marietta, Georgia, was the No. 3 pro-style quarterback prospect nationally and a four-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite coming out of high school. He wound up starting three of seven games as a freshman, going 1-2. He was 48 of 68 for 578 yards with four touchdown passes and two interceptions. This season, Heupel named Joe Milton as the starter before the opener. After an injury, Hendon Hooker, a graduate transfer from Virginia Tech, started the past six games. Bailey played only in a rout of Tennessee Tech where he threw for 16 yards and ran for the first TD of his career. - AP College Football

Malik Cunningham rushed for three touchdowns, including a 14-yard clinching run with 2:53 remaining to cap a milestone performance, and Louisville overcame four turnovers to beat Boston College 28-14 on Saturday and snap a two-game losing streak. Seeking a rebound coming out of a bye following consecutive losses by four total points, the Cardinals (4-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) followed a BC touchdown with 21 unanswered points to take control before halftime, or so it seemed. They thwarted chances to pad their lead as Cunningham tossed two interceptions and Hassan Hall fumbled in between their TDs.

Even after Josh Minkins picked off BC's Dennis Grosel in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter to stop one serious threat, Louisville freshman back Trevion Cooley coughed it back up on the next play to set up the Eagles at the Louisville 30. BC took advantage on Jaelen Gill's 6-yard TD reception to get within 21-14 and make it interesting before Cunningham's run sealed a rain-soaked homecoming win. "It came right down to the end there and we were able to close it out," Louisville coach Scott Satterfield said. "That was a big time run by Cunningham to get that last touchdown." Of course, the mobile quarterback had a couple before that. Cunningham reached 2,000 career yards rushing and became the fifth Louisville player with at least 30 rushing TDs on a drive capped by his 1-yard run midway through the second quarter. Cunningham rushed 16 times for 133 yards, completed 9 of 17 passes for 107 yards and credited teammates for his success. - Louisville/AP College Football

Hendon Hooker threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Tennessee routed Missouri 62-24, scoring touchdowns on its first six possessions Saturday. Hooker completed 15 of 19 passes for 225 yards and rushed 14 times for 74 yards. He wasn't the only Volunteer who padded his stats against a beleaguered defense. Tiyon Evans rushed 15 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Tennessee (3-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) piled up 677 total yards and never punted. The Volunteers built a 28-3 first-quarter lead without ever needing to run a third-down play. Among the many highlights was Evans' 92-yard touchdown run in which he ran through a massive hole on the right side and wasn't touched by a Missouri defender.

The 92-yard TD run was third-longest in program history. The Tigers (2-3, 0-2 SEC) entered the game ranked 129th out of 130 FBS teams in rushing defense, allowing an average of 269 rushing yards per game. Tennessee had 275 rushing yards in the first half alone as it built a 45-10 lead and finished with 452 yards on the ground. The Tennessee defense contained Missouri's big-play threat, Tyler Badie, holding the running back to 41 yards on 21 carries, and intercepted quarterback Connor Bazelak twice. The best moment for Missouri came on special teams when Kris Abrams-Draine returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Louisville seemingly could do no wrong in the first half, building a 24-point lead. But even as the game flipped on the Cardinals, they again made a big defensive play in the second half to hold on for a second straight critical win. Malik Cunningham had four first-half touchdowns - two passing and two rushing - and Louisville held off Florida State's second-half rally, 31-23, in the Cardinals' Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Saturday.

Cunningham now has eight rushing touchdowns, two in each game for Louisville (3-1, 1-0). He completed 25 of 39 passes for 264 yards and ran 14 times for 56 yards. "They definitely made adjustments because if not we would have had 60," Cunningham said. "I think we relaxed a little bit as an offense. We kind of laid back a little bit and thought the game was over. We got to finish off games. We started off fast. We just have to finish better in order to get to the next step to an elite offense." The Seminoles trailed 31-7 with 1:49 to halftime but gradually chipped away at Louisville's lead in the second half, trimming the deficit to 31-23 on Ryan Fitzgerald's 45-yard field-goal with 8:40 left. But the Seminoles' rally fell short when McKenzie Milton's downfield pass was picked off by Louisville's Kei'Trel Clark with 48 seconds left. Despite a shaky second half, Louisville can now claim back-to-back wins over UCF and Florida State. The Cardinals can also credit their defense for again coming through with a late interception - Jaylin Alderman picked off a tipped pass and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown in a 42-35 win over UCF. - Louisville/AP College Football

Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 399 yards and four touchdown passes to spark a 54-21 victory against Florida International on Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders shook loose from a tight game after the first quarter with four touchdowns in the second period and racked up 264 yards along the way. They finished the night with 584 total yards. In the best offensive night this year for Texas Tech (3-0), Shough was an effective catalyst. He spread the ball around to 11 receivers and twice completed eight passes in a row, going 26 of 35.

In the first two games, the Red Raiders ran only 102 plays and star receiver Erik Ezukanma had 17 of the team's 27 receptions. He faced double-teams most of the night and Shough adjusted. "We got to spread the wealth a little more and you saw guys making plays," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said. Added Shough, "It was just part of the progressions. Guys were getting open and I got them the ball." The Red Raiders needed that spark after falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter. The Panthers (1-2) blended inside power runs by D'vonte Price and deep throws by Max Bortenschlager to piece together an 88-yard drive. Price bulled into the end zone with 6:27 to go in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead. Meanwhile, Texas Tech's offense scuffled. The Red Raiders' first two possessions ended in punts, and when they forced FIU into a three-and-out, returner Adrian Frye muffed the ball to give it back to the Panthers. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Malik Cunningham ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Louisville, which cruised to a 30-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night. In guiding the Cardinals (1-1) to their first victory of the season, the redshirt junior quarterback completed 15-of-23 passes for 277 yards. He got some early help from special teams. Marvin Dallas recovered a muffed punt return at the Colonels 25, leading to Cunningham's first score, a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:27 left in the first quarter.

Braden Smith made it 13-0 with a 49-yard punt return for a score with 10:15 left in the first half. Cunningham would have had another touchdown, but freshman Ahmari Huggins-Bruce dropped the ball on the EKU 1 on what would have been a 95-yard touchdown pass with 10:16 left in the fourth quarter. The ball rolled into the endzone, and the Colonels recovered for a touchback. "It's unfortunate," Louisville coach Scott Satterfield said of Huggins-Bruce, who finished with a Louisville true freshman record 150 receiving yards on four catches. "He did the hard part. The heavy lifting was outrunning the whole defense. Then the easy part, anybody in this room could just carry the ball across the line, but… he still had a great night." - Louisville/AP College Football

Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer threw four touchdown passes in the first half, three to wide receiver David Bell, as the Boilermakers rolled over winless UConn 49-0 Saturday afternoon at Pratt & Whitney Stadium. After punting on its first possession, Purdue (2-0) scored touchdowns on each of its next five to take a 35-0 lead at halftime. "While things weren't as great as we wanted on the first series or two, we found a way to regroup and played well from there," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. The Boilermakers, a 34-point favorite by most sports books, scored two more touchdowns with their first two drives in the second half with many second-stringers in the lineup. Plummer completed 16 of his 20 passes, racking up 245 yards and four touchdowns. Bell caught six of the passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Both were replaced to start the second half.

In their first game under interim coach Lou Spanos, who took over Monday following Randy Edsall's abrupt retirement, the Huskies advanced inside Purdue's 20-yard line only once in the game. "We feel awful. Our team feels awful that we're not executing. We're just disappointed for our fans," Spanos said. "But our players, they're teammates to each other. We're getting closer as a team. Now, we've got to make sure it transfers on game day. We do good stuff in practice, but we have to do better on game day." UConn (0-3) has lost 28 of its last 29 games against FBS competition. "It was great to see our guys come through and do what we needed to do in this game," Brohm said. "When you face a team that's going through some adversity, you have to make sure your guys come ready to play and understand that on any given day anybody can win. That's college football." It was UConn's most lopsided shutout loss since a 49-0 loss to New Hampshire Nov. 7, 1931. - Purdue/AP College Football

Tyler Shough accounted for two touchdowns, Tahj Brooks rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and Texas Tech beat Houston 38-21 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. Shough finished 17 of 24 for 231 yards passing with a touchdown and ran for another score in his debut for the Red Raiders. The Oregon transfer scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with eight minutes left in the third quarter to start a streak of 31-unanswered points for Texas Tech.

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said Shough was solid and had good eyes. "He saw what he needed to see and communicated it clearly," Wells said. "He was calm. … He was accurate and scrambled a little bit. I think the sky's the limit for him." Erik Ezukanma had seven catches for 179 yards for Texas Tech, which outgained Houston 376-251. Houston's Clayton Tune finished 27-of-38 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted four times. Nathaniel Dell caught seven passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Purdue coach Jeff Brohm promised to make changes heading into this season. On Saturday, it paid dividends. Now, he's hoping it keeps working. Jack Plummer threw for 313 yards and two late touchdowns while the Boilermakers' revamped defense made sure it held up for a 30-21 victory over Oregon State to cap the 500th game played at Ross-Ade Stadium. Purdue has won 291 games since its home venue opened in 1924 and this one came in prime time and in front of the largest home crowd in 644 days - thanks largely to the Boilermakers defense. "I think they played really hard, tough, had a couple huge fourth-down stops," Brohm said. "We did what we had to do." It was good enough to snap a four-game losing streak and bring some relief to a program that hasn't played in a bowl game since 2018. The difference: Two fourth-down stops in the second half, which Purdue (1-0) converted into 10 points and Brohm's willingness to throw it deep late in the game. Plummer finished 29 of 41, sealing the victory with a 50-yard TD pass to a wide open Payne Durham with 2:09 left. - Purdue/AP College Football

Kentucky quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood has received a waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility to play this season at UCF, a team source told the Orlando Sentinel Friday night. Gatewood, who will wear the No. 7 for the Knights, according to the team's online roster, enrolled at UCF this past Monday after announcing his decision to transfer to the Orlando school last weekend.

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn, who originally coached Gatewood at Auburn in 2018 and 2019, called the quarterback "extremely talented" this week. "First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about Gatewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." The Bartram Trail product began his college career at Auburn under Malzahn, taking a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. The following year Gatewood lost out on the starting quarterback spot to then-freshman Bo Nix and decided to transfer to Kentucky for the 2020 season. - Orlando Sentinel

As Jeff Brohm looks to push Purdue's program forward after back-to-back losing seasons, he'll begin this important year with a starting quarterback who can add mobility while leaning on his experience. Jack Plummer features both and has earned the starting job for the Sept. 4 season-opener when the Boilermakers host Oregon State at Ross-Ade Stadium. Plummer won a close competition with Aidan O'Connell, last year's opening-day starter, and Austin Burton, a transfer from UCLA prior to last season but has yet to play. Just the threat of a running quarterback should help expand Brohm's offense to a different level. With struggles in the running game the last two seasons, the Boilermakers need a threat on the ground, even if it comes from the quarterback position.

The mobility of Plummer, along with Burton, has always been appealing to Brohm. The option of having a dual-threat at quarterback opens up Brohm's playbook and gives the offense an opportunity to keep defenses off-balanced and produce more big plays. Plummer will be asked to use his legs more in key situations - third down plays and in the red zone. "We think the quarterback position has to have that threat with the ball in his hands and the defense has to honor him and respect him," Brohm said. "It's something we always have to have in the game plan. "We feel like it has to be an option and we have to utilize it. Taking care of the football when that's being done and protecting yourself when you do run and get yards and get positive plays and get down when you have to. If the down and distance require you to go get the first down, that's what you have to do." - Journal and Courier

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn addressed the addition of quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood to the Knights football program on Tuesday and had high praise for his former player at Auburn. "First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about Gatewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." Gatewood, who is now officially listed on the team's roster online, announced his decision to transfer to UCF over social media and enrolled at the university on Monday. Gatewood will the wear the uniform No. 7 for UCF according to the roster.

Although he's part of the team and enrolled, it's unclear if Gatewood will be able to earn eligibility to play this season at UCF. The Bartram Trail product began his college career at Auburn under Malzahn taking a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. The following year, Gatewood lost out on the starting quarterback spot to then-freshman Bo Nix, and decided to transfer to Kentucky for the 2020 season. Last year for the Wildcats, Gatewood played in seven games, rushing 25 times for 62 yards and completing 17-of-35 passes for 109 yards with one interception after becoming eligible to play on Sept. 30. Because he's transferred once before, Gatewood needs to apply for a waiver to see the field this season for the Knights due to NCAA rules. "He's not eligible now," Malzahn said. "We'll look at waivers and all that, see what that looks like in the future." - Orlando Sentinel
