  09/03/21 - Charlie BrewerrSr/2023, Liberty, 6-1, 200 (DS#25 QB) + More +

Charlie Brewer threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns in his Utah debut to help the No. 24 Utes beat Weber State 40-17 on Thursday night. Dalton Kincaid caught four passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns in the opener for both teams. Tavion Thomas ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in his Utah debut. Brewer beat out Cameron Rising for the starting quarterback job in camp and did not disappoint. He was crisp on many throws and gave Utah a legitimate passing attack it lacked at times last season. "I thought he was very poised in the pocket," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He did a nice job keeping his eyes downfield. He was accurate...Did a good job of running the offense." Bronson Barron threw for 213 yards and a touchdown for Weber State, but the Wildcats had just 57 yards rushing. - AP College Football/Utah Football

  08/27/21 - Charlie BrewerrSr/2023, Liberty, 6-1, 200 (DS#25 QB) + More +

There's no ifs, ands or ORs about it: Charlie Brewer is the starting quarterback for Utah's season opener against Weber State. The Utes released their first depth chart of the 2021 season, and it lists the Baylor grad transfer as the starter at quarterback, with Cameron Rising the backup. The Utes open the season against the Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. MDT at the newly renovated Rice-Eccles Stadium. Brewer, a senior, was considered a leading candidate for the starting position, as he came to Utah after starting for four seasons at Baylor and has thrown for 9,700 yards and 65 touchdowns in his college career.

Rising, a sophomore, was the Game 1 starter for Utah last season before going down with a season-ending injury just one quarter into the year. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Brewer was named to the team's 16-man leadership council earlier this week and has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Davey O'Brien Award (nation's best college quarterback) and Maxwell Award (college player of the year). During the Utes' spring game in April, Brewer showed off his potential by completing 15 of 15 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 228.6 in just one half of play. - Deseret News

The University of Utah has its next starting quarterback. Charlie Brewer will start the Sept. 2 season-opener vs. in-state FCS power Weber State at Rice-Eccles Stadium (5:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday morning. After Saturday's fall camp-ending live scrimmage at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said he and his staff would make a decision later in the day, with the pick set to take over the offense when practice reconvened on Monday, 11 days until the opener. But on Monday afternoon, Whittingham said only that a full depth chart would be released later this week. - Salt Lake Tribune

  08/24/21 - Joshua MackrSr/2022, Liberty, 5-11, 201 (DS#98 RB) + More +

Mack is one of 16 players who elected to come back for a "super senior" season, and his sixth season in the college ranks gives him another opportunity to be the featured tailback. The main focus for Mack during the summer and into preseason camp has been making sure his body is in the best possible shape for the 12-game grind. "Mack's a super senior and he's doing well right now," Johnson said. "The way he has changed himself body-wise with Dom in the weight room and the strength and conditioning staff has done a heck of a job, and so has Danielle. His body's totally different than what it's been since Year 1, so kudos to Coach Dom and his staff and Mrs. Danielle. They've got a heck of a job with him getting his body right."

Mack said he's feeling the best he's felt since arriving in college. He still is playing around 200 pounds, but he's dropped body fat and added muscle. The veteran's playing time in 2019 diminished early in the campaign after a fumble inside the 5-yard line prevented Liberty from getting points on the board against Syracuse. He missed time last season with an infection in an elbow, but that didn't stop him from leading all running backs with nearly 800 yards on the ground. - Lynchburg News and Advance

The NCAA allowed student-athletes to begin capitalizing on their name, image and likeness beginning July 1, and Liberty football players were among the first to take advantage of the new rule. The majority of the offensive line has a sponsorship deal with local barbeque restaurant County Smoak, while other players have signed deals with various companies. Quarterback Malik Willis, arguably the most marketable player on the Liberty roster, announced on social media Thursday he has signed with Steinberg Sports for his NIL representation. "Picking that person and picking that group to represent me during this NIL period was definitely a process. That's why it took so long," Willis said Friday, adding he allowed his father, Harold Willis, to be more hands-on with the process. "I just wanted to vet the right people and make sure I was going with the right people that would help me to be the best football player I could be while not having to worry about that type of stuff. That was the main priority." Steinberg Sports' chairman is Leigh Steinberg, an American sports agent who has represented an NFL record eight No. 1 overall draft picks. Willis is the fourth college player to be represented by Steinberg Sports for NIL, joining Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, Coastal Carolina cornerback D'Jordan Strong and South Carolina defensive back RJ Roderick. - Lynchburg News and Advance

  08/13/21 - Dae Dae HunterrJr/2024, Liberty, 5-09, 190 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Rarely does a true freshman get bestowed with an honor to make program history, but that's exactly what University of Hawaii running back Dae Dae Hunter was able to do in 2020. The 2020 season was the first time players were allowed to wear the jersey number '0' in college football. At UH, the distinction went to Hunter, making him the first-ever Rainbow Warrior to do so. All the latest sports news from Hawaii's sports station "Coming into college, I was just trying to play and touch the field and I was able to get No. 0 and just be the first one to do it, I got a single digit as a freshman," Hunter said. "I was happy and just smiling about it and it looks good so it just makes me happy, I'm glad to have it. Great blessing."

UH beat out other schools such as Nevada, Wyoming, UNLV and Eastern Michigan for Hunter's services back when he was a senior at Chandler High School in Arizona. Although he signed in December 2019 thinking he was going to play for Nick Rolovich, Hunter stuck with his commitment and instead saw immediate playing time for Todd Graham in his first year at the helm in Manoa. As a backup running back, Hunter scored four total touchdowns for the 'Bows in 2020 - two rushing and two receiving - after carrying the ball 46 times for 183 yards with 12 receptions for 71 yards. In 2021, he's expected to be the team's top full-time running back due to Calvin Turner splitting time between running back and slot receiver. - Khon2.com

  08/05/21 - Charlie BrewerrSr/2023, Liberty, 6-1, 200 (DS#25 QB) + More +

The long-awaited, much-ballyhooed quarterback competition between Charlie Brewer and Cam Rising commences when the University of Utah football team opens fall camp on Wednesday afternoon. Brewer, a graduate transfer from Baylor, has the hype, thanks to a resume that includes 9,700 passing yards and 65 touchdowns across 44 games for the Big 12 program. Rising, a fourth-year sophomore, is not the incumbent, per se, but has already won the job once. Last season, Rising overcame another graduate transfer in South Carolina's Jake Bentley to win the job and started the season-opener vs. USC, but was lost for the season on the 14th offensive snap to a shoulder injury.

So here we are: another training camp, another Utes quarterback competition on deck. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has never been one to fully show his cards when it comes to any position battle, but he made one thing about the timing of his choice clear when he spoke to The Salt Lake Tribune last week at Pac-12 media day. "Sooner rather than later," Whittingham said when asked what his decision timeframe was to choose a quarterback. "As soon as we see that separation. As soon as we see it." - Salt Lake Tribune

  04/20/21 - Charlie BrewerrSr/2023, Liberty, 6-1, 200 (DS#25 QB) + More +

Utah's 73-play effort on Saturday was no different, but the 6,500 present and the rest of the fans watching on Pac-12 Networks should be left thinking about two things. In the immediate aftermath of the 15th and final spring practice, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said he believes this incarnation of the Utes is "going to be a complete football team." Furthermore, he stayed with an ongoing spring storyline by heaping praise upon Charlie Brewer, and with good reason. Brewer, a graduate transfer from Baylor, looked in complete control Saturday, going 15 for 15 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. It should be noted that the defense was not allowed to hit Brewer, so a handful of his dropbacks would have resulted in sacks during a real game, but no matter.

Saturday marked Brewer's unofficial public unveiling in a Utah uniform, and he did not disappoint. "Clean, just like he's been all spring," Whittingham said. "He's a quick decision-maker, he's accurate, he gets the ball out of his hands quickly, he does a good job protecting the football. What you saw today is what we've been seeing all spring long, so it's going to be a great battle between him and Cam [Rising] come fall camp for that No. 1 spot. Charlie has really done an outstanding job of integrating into our program." - Salt Lake Tribune

Utah's quarterback competition has not started yet, not really anyway. Whittingham has already made clear that Cameron Rising will get his shot during fall camp, when his surgically repaired right shoulder should allow him to compete at full strength. As Brewer seemingly continues to impress behind closed doors with no media access this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as Whittingham continues to sound like he has found something at the most-important position on the field, can Rising legitimately still win the job he won out of fall camp last season before getting hurt in the opener?

We're not going to find that out until August, but in March and April, Brewer has clearly shown something after 9,700 passing yards, almost 11,000 yards of total offense, and 87 touchdowns in four seasons in the Big 12. "He does all the little things that make the difference between being just average and being really good," Whittingham said. "He's paid that price and it didn't start during spring ball. It started from the day he stepped on campus. He's been in that playbook, and in the film room, and what we see out on the field is the product of all that hard work." - Salt Lake Tribune

Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer continues to solidify himself as Utah's No. 1 quarterback as the Utes work through the fourth week of spring practices. Coach Kyle Whittingham was asked Tuesday if any QB has separated himself from the rest of the group. "Charlie Brewer, hands down. He's been everything we've hoped he'd be to this point. He's a proven vet," he said. "He's got a lot of experience under his belt at the Power Five level. He's thrown for a ton of yards and he's won a ton of games. That's what we expected. So far, he's been exactly what we've expected." During spring camp, Brewer, a senior, has been competing with a group of freshmen - Peter Costelli, Ja'Quinden Jackson, Cooper Justice and Bryson Barnes. Fans will be able to catch Brewer's first public performance as a Ute during the spring game on April 17 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. "Charlie Brewer, hands down. He's been everything we've hoped he'd be to this point. He's a proven vet. He's got a lot of experience under his belt at the Power Five level. He's thrown for a ton of yards and he's won a ton of games. That's what we expected." - Utah coach Kyle Whittingham on Charlie Brewer separating himself from the pack of QBs. - Deseret News
