University of Utah graduate transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer attempted over 1,300 passes across 44 games for Baylor from 2016-19. The other four Utes quarterbacks available during spring practice are freshmen, with a combined zero collegiate snaps between them. Taking all of that information into account as Utah finishes up its second week of spring ball, it stands to reason that Brewer would seize early control of a quarterback competition that will surely drag into the summer. After Kyle Whittingham spoke on the matter Friday morning, that assumption would be correct. "First of all, Charlie Brewer is quite a bit ahead of everybody else," the 17th-year Utah head coach said on a Zoom call with reporters. "The other four are freshmen, that's to be expected. Charlie's a senior with a lot of experience under his belt. The other four guys have almost no Division I experience, so that's no surprise to us. That's how things are unfolding to this point." Brewer may be ahead of everyone else, but all of Whittingham's quarterback options are not yet available, which is why this competition will eventually move to fall camp. - Salt Lake Tribune

R.J. Roderick couldn't stop worrying about the future. He worried about his falling grades, about COVID-19 and the nagging hip pointer injury that made it painful for him to play. Then South Carolina fired football coach Will Muschamp - the coach who had recruited him - and Roderick decided to step away from the game altogether. The Gamecock safety from Summerville opted out last November, midway through his junior season, and turned his attention toward himself. The NCAA and schools allowed such a move during the pandemic while preserving his scholarship and eligibility. Months later, Roderick is back in garnet and black, rejoining the team for spring practice under a new coaching regime. On Monday, Roderick spoke to reporters for the first time since he opted out, explaining what it was like to spend those months away from football.

"It was hard, just dealing with it, just still watching my boys play, watching football period," Roderick said. "But I just spent that time committing myself to working harder, bringing my grades up, making sure that I stay eligible, making sure that my grades are good, to make my mom proud. So I just focused on making myself better in different areas, as well, just to kind of take my head off of it. "I mean, it's depressing just to not be able to play football. So I'm appreciative that I'm here and that spring has started and just loving everything." - Rock Hill Herald

Kyle Whittingham has four high-profile, Power Five transfers at his disposal as spring practice rolls on at the University of Utah, two at quarterback and two at running back. They may all be transfers, but they're not all in the same boat. As a graduate transfer from Baylor, quarterback Charlie Brewer is eligible immediately for the Utes. Normally, freshman quarterback Ja'Quinden Jackson, junior running back T.J. Pledger, and redshirt sophomore running back Chris Curry would have to either sit one season, or petition the NCAA for an immediate-eligibility waiver. The need for Jackson, Pledger and Curry to all sit out the 2021 season may soon disappear, though. On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Council reaffirmed its preference to vote as soon as April on a legislative proposal that would allow student-athletes, regardless of sport, to transfer one time without having to sit a season as penalty. - Salt Lake Tribune

In January, the NCAA will likely pass legislation that would allow student-athletes to transfer once without the penalty of having to sit out for one season. "There will probably be more change and movement that's going to occur," Whittingham said. "That's the way it seems to be heading. You've got to adjust as things change and try to get yourself in the best situation." The day after Utah's season ended, two quarterbacks announced they were joining the Utes: Baylor grad transfer Charlie Brewer and Texas transfer Ja'Quinden Jackson. In December, Utah also signed four-star recruit Peter Costelli. Brewer led Baylor to an 11-1 record, a spot in the Big 12 championship game and a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2019. - Deseret News

Liberty (10-1) took the lead on Alex Barbir's 44-yard field goal on the first extra possession. Safety Alex Spillum recovered the fumble to end the long drive.

Malik Willis ran for 137 yards and four touchdowns for Liberty. The Flames' only loss came to North Carolina State on a blocked field goal.   Former Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer announced Sunday that he's transferring to Utah for his final season of college eligibility. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 season didn't count against players' eligibility. All transfers are eligible to play in 2021. Brewer started four seasons for the Bears and finished with 9,700 yards passing, which ranks second in school history behind Robert Griffin III's 10,366. Brewer also ranks second in school history with 65 touchdown passes behind Griffin's 78, and he ran for 1,039 yards and 22 touchdowns. Brewer is the second Big 12 quarterback to announce that he's transferring to Utah.   After four seasons as Baylor's starting quarterback, Charlie Brewer announced Sunday that he's entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer with intentions of playing his final year of eligibility at another college. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 season didn't count against players' eligibility. Like Brewer, the graduate transfer market will likely be heavy across the country. Brewer announced his plans on Twitter, saying "It is with much thought and prayer that I will be entering the transfer portal and moving on as a graduate transfer.

A heartfelt thanks to my teammates, coach (Matt) Rhule and coach (Dave) Aranda for an amazing ride the last four years here at Baylor. I will take with me a lifetime of memories and degree from Baylor University." Brewer, who was unavailable for further comment, finished his Baylor career with 9,700 yards passing, which ranks second in school history behind Robert Griffin III's 10,366. Brewer also ranks second in school history with 65 touchdown passes behind Griffin's 78, and he ran for 1,039 yards and 22 touchdowns. - Waco Tribune-Herald

FAU (5-3, 4-2 Conference USA), the conference champion last season, was eliminated from contention for the 2020 title. The Owls, who went into the game ranked No. 3 nationally in scoring defense (12.4), allowed more than 20 points for the first time this season. Lowe was 13-of-19 passing for 209 yards with an interception and added 70 yards rushing and a score on 16 carries.

Freshman Frank Gore Jr. had 111 yards rushing, including a 73-yard touchdown in the first quarter, for Southern Miss (3-7, 2-4). Tim Jones caught a 5-yard touchdown pass that capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive and gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good at 24-17 with 8 seconds left in the first half. Jason Brownlee scored on a 43-yard catch-and-run to give Southern Miss a 14-point lead nearly four minutes into the third quarter.   12/10/20 - T.J. GreenrSr/2023, Liberty + More +

The lone running back who had made a verbal commitment in Liberty's 2021 recruiting class elected to decommit from the program and reopen his recruitment early Monday afternoon. It didn't take long for the Flames to fill that void. Utah transfer TJ Green, who entered the transfer portal before the Utes' shortened season began, announced Monday evening he is transferring to Liberty.

Green, who has graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics, is immediately eligible as a graduate transfer and has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He is the only running back listed in a recruiting class that currently features 10 high school seniors and three junior college transfers. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Green redshirted in 2017 and played in the 2018 and 2019 seasons with Utah. He had 59 carries for 258 yards and one touchdown in 25 games. - Lynchburg News and Advance
