Saturday's announcement that LSU had suspended freshman linebacker Donte Starks from the football team came a day after he was arrested in Marrero by Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office narcotics detectives. Starks, 19, was jailed Friday night on counts of illegally possessing a concealed handgun and attempting to run away from deputies who stopped him while investigating a complaint about armed men selling crack cocaine, Sheriff's Office Capt. Jason Rivarde said Wednesday. Rivarde said deputies did not find any drugs during Starks' arrest, and he is not accused of selling narcotics. - New Orleans Times-Picayune

The Southeastern Conference schools each received more than $44.6 million in total revenue distributed by the league, a seven-figure increase from the previous fiscal year. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday the league handed out just over $651.0 million of total revenue among the 14 members for the 2018-19 fiscal year, which ended August 31, 2019. That's up from $627.1 million total and $43.1 million per school in 2017-18. It includes $624.2 million distributed from the conference office, as well as $26.8 million schools kept to offset travel and other related bowl expenses. The total distributed comes from television agreements, postseason bowl games and the College Football Playoff and the SEC football championship game, as well as the league's men's basketball tournament, the NCAA Championships and a supplemental surplus distribution. - AP College Football

LSU star Joe Burrow has been selected as the 2019 winner of the Manning Award, presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl to the top quarterback in the nation. The Manning honor caps one of the most impressive seasons by a quarterback in college football history. The Manning Award, now in its 16th year, was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. The award is voted on by a panel of local and national media, as well as each of the Mannings.

Burrow, a native of Athens, Ohio, turned in what is arguably the best season ever for a collegiate quarterback in 2019. The senior set the NCAA FBS record with 60 touchdown passes while leading the nation with 5,671 passing yards and narrowly missing setting the FBS record for completion percentage – he finished at 76.3 percent as he completed 402 of 527 passes. More impressively, he led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 season including a dominant 42-25 College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship victory over defending champion Clemson. Burrow was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship game after throwing for 463 yards and five touchdowns. - LSU Football

Bo Pelini, who helped LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, is returning to the Tiger coaching staff as defensive coordinator, head coach Ed Orgeron announced on Monday. Pelini returns to LSU after serving as the head coach at Youngstown State for the past five seasons where he guided the Penguins to a 33-28 overall mark and an appearance in the FCS National Championship Game in 2016. Pelini has a head coaching record of 100-55, which includes seven years as head coach at Nebraska. Pelini's hire is pending approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors. "We are privileged to have one of the top defensive coordinators in all of football in Bo Pelini join our staff," Orgeron said. "Bo has had some of the best defenses in football during his career and we are looking forward to him bringing his tremendous amount of knowledge and expertise back to LSU to continue to win championships."

In his three years as defensive coordinator with the Tigers from 2005-07, LSU went a combined 34-6, claimed the 2007 national title and beat Notre Dame to win the Sugar Bowl during the 2006 season. LSU also appeared in the SEC Championship Game twice, winning the league title in 2007. In his first stint as defensive coordinator with the Tigers, LSU's defense ranked No. 3 nationally in total defense all three years. LSU finished No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference in total defense in both 2006 and 2007 and ranked No. 2 in the league in 2005. - LSU Football

LSU has contacted officials from the NCAA and Southeastern Conference about Cleveland Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr.'s apparent cash payments to Tigers players on the field after the national championship game, a university spokesman said. LSU athletics spokesman Michael Bonnette said initial information suggested that Beckham handed out "novelty bills" to players after the top-ranked Tigers defeated Clemson on Monday night. However, further investigation showed that Beckham may have given away real money, Bonnette said. "Information and footage reviewed since shows apparent cash may have also been given to LSU student-athletes," Bonnette said in a statement. "We were in contact with the NCAA and the SEC immediately upon learning of this situation in which some of our student-athletes may have been placed in a compromising position. We are working with our student-athletes, the NCAA and the SEC in order to rectify the situation." Beckham starred for LSU from 2011 to 2013 and was a first-round draft pick by the New York Giants. He was traded to Cleveland before last season. Videos posted on social media showed Beckham placing money in the hand of LSU receiver Justin Jefferson and celebrating with players in LSU's locker room in the Superdome. Jefferson, who just completed his junior season, is eligible to turn pro and enter this spring's NFL draft. - AP College Football

LSU's national championship game victory against Clemson drew nearly 26 million viewers to ESPN, up slightly from last year's final. ESPN said Tuesday that viewership for the three-game College Football Playoff increased 4% from last season, when Clemson beat Alabama in the championship. The network's championship game megacast, which includes ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNews, drew 25.6 million viewers. Last year's megacast had 25.3 million viewers. The ESPN-only audience was also up over last year, from 24.3 million to 25 million. Joe Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner, led No. 1 LSU to a 42-25 victory Monday night in New Orleans. The game was 28-25 in the third quarter before LSU surged and put away the title early in the fourth quarter. Overall, the television audience for New Year's Six games were down 4% over last year for ESPN. - AP College Football

  01/13/20 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Joe Burrow threw five touchdown passes, ran for another score and capped one of the greatest seasons in college football history by leading No. 1 LSU to a 42-25 victory against No. 3 Clemson on Monday night to win the national championship. The small-town Ohio kid turned Louisiana legend delivered the Tigers (15-0) their first national title since 2007 and fourth overall, breaking a few more records along the way in what was already an historic season. The five TD passes and 463 yards passing are the most for a BCS or College Football Playoff title game as are his six total touchdowns. He became the first major college quarterback to throw 60 touchdown passes in a season as LSU snapped defending national champion Clemson's 29-game winning streak. For the first time in his college career, Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence was on the losing team. The Tigers (14-1) had won his first 25 starts.

But on this night, Lawrence (18 for 37 for 234 yards) was no match for Burrow - the Ohio State transferred who threw all of 16 TD passes last season with LSU. His ascent has been dizzying and unprecedented. Running a version of the New Orleans Saints' offense that was brought to LSU by 30-year-old assistant coach Joe Brady, Burrow and an array of talented receivers transformed these Tigers into one of the most prolific offenses college football has ever seen. It was coach Ed Orgeron's vision for LSU when he was promoted from interim coach in 2016. There was plenty of skepticism when LSU tabbed the Cajun who had failed in his first crack at head coach with Mississippi. Orgeron has proved to be the perfect fit. Just like Burrow. - AP College Football

Top-ranked LSU faces No. 3 Clemson for the college football national championship Monday night at the Superdome in New Orleans. Both sets of Tigers are 14-0, seeking to cap a perfect season. President Donald Trump is expected to be among those in attendance. It's practically a home game for LSU. Its campus is just 90 minutes away and purple-and-gold clad supporters could be found all around New Orleans.

There were plenty of orange-wearing Clemson fans on the streets, hoping their team wins a second straight national championship. A second-story veranda near Jackson Square boasted Clemson flags from its 2016 and 2018 national titles, along with an inflatable Tiger figure. Clemson is after its third crown in four seasons and its 30th straight victory. LSU is seeking its first national championship since 2007 and first in the CFP era. - AP College Football

With each team missing its standout rusher, defense dominated at Tuesday's Sun Bowl. Hardly pretty, but hardly a concern for Arizona State coach Herm Edwards. "Obviously it was a game not pleasing to the eye," he said. Willie Harts returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead Arizona State to a 20-14 victory against Florida State. Harts, a freshman cornerback, halted a 14-0 surge by Florida State (6-7) and helped the Sun Devils (8-5) hang on for their fourth Sun Bowl victory, despite not scoring an offensive touchdown. "Our D was on fire tonight," Harts added. "It just shows the potential for our defense."

James Blackman threw a 91-yard touchdown pass, the longest pass play in Sun Bowl history, to Tamorrion Terry to give Florida State its first lead, 14-9, in the third quarter. The Seminoles trailed 9-0 at halftime. Cristian Zendejas kicked a Sun Bowl record-tying four field goals for Arizona State, including a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter to cut the FSU lead to 14-12. Blackman's fourth interception of the game was returned by Harts to put the Sun Devils ahead for good with 10:06 left in the fourth. "When you get six turnovers, you should probably win the game," Edwards said. Jayden Daniels was named the game's MVP after going 12-for-28 passing for 198 yards to lead the Sun Devils. He also ran 36 yards and a 2-point conversion. - AP College Football

  12/31/19 - Michael Divinity Jr.Sr/2020, LSU, 6-2, 242 (DS#20 ILB) + More +

No. 1 LSU has reinstated linebacker Michael Divinity Jr. for the national championship game against No. 3 Clemson. Coach Ed Orgeron on Tuesday also discussed speculation about passing-game coordinator Joe Brady being sought for NFL jobs. Brady is credited with helping the Tigers to their best season on offense. Divinity briefly left the team in mid-season and returned to practice on Nov. 18. He was prevented by LSU from playing in a handful of games because of violations of team rules. Speaking by conference call, Orgeron said a decision was made to let Divinity, a 6-foot-2, 241-pound senior, play in the title game in New Orleans on Jan. 13.

"Mike has been a tremendous pass rusher for us. I know we're definitely going to use him," Orgeron said. "He'll be back in a role, what he's doing, and we'll see what fits best. "It all depends where we need him," Orgeron continued. "Our inside guys are playing well. We could use him outside in some situations. That could allow JaCoby Stevens to go back to a safety position or a corner position...And then obviously in our pass rush scheme, Mike is one of our best pass rushers. So I think he immediately goes back to starting on our dime (six-defensive back) package." Divinity has played in five games this season and has four tackles for loss, including three sacks. As a junior, Divinity had 10 1/2 tackles for loss and was LSU's co-leader in sacks with five. - AP College Football

  12/28/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Joe Burrow turned in the greatest performance yet in his Heisman Trophy season, throwing for seven touchdowns and 493 yards as No. 1 LSU romped to a breathtaking 63-28 victory over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl semifinal game Saturday. The Tigers (14-0) headed to the national championship game against either No. 2 Ohio State or No. 3 Clemson clicking on all cylinders, having dismantled the Sooners (12-2) with a first half for the ages. Burrow tied the record for any college bowl game with his seven TD passes - which all came before the bands hit the field for the halftime show at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Justin Jefferson was on the receiving end for four of those scoring plays, also tying a bowl record. For good measure, Burrow scored an eighth TD himself on a 3-yard run in the third quarter, thoroughly dominating his expected duel with Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Heisman runner-up.

The impressive victory came with heavy hearts. Shortly before the game, LSU offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger learned that his daughter-in-law, broadcaster Carley McCord, was among five people killed in a plane crash in Louisiana. The small plane went down shortly after takeoff for what was supposed to be a flight to Atlanta for the game. Ensminger had tears running down his cheeks during warm-ups, but he was in his usual spot high above the field when the game kicked off, calling plays along with passing game coordinator Joe Brady. It was a brilliant, poignant performance in the face of such tragedy. The players didn't learn until afterward what Ensminger was going through. - AP College Football

  12/24/19 - *Clyde Edwards-HelaireJr/2020, LSU, 5-07, 207 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Steve Ensminger said this LSU offense is the one he waited 38 years to coach. Now, with No. 1 LSU only one win away from the national championship game, that special offense has been dealt an unexpected setback. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the All-Southeastern Conference running back whose versatile skills are vital to the Tigers' attack, could miss Saturday's Peach Bowl playoff semifinal against No. 4 Oklahoma with a hamstring injury. Edwards-Helaire needed crutches and a scooter to move around last week after hurting his hamstring in practice. He was not seen in the portion of Tuesday's practice that was open to reporters. After Edwards-Helair did not practice on Monday, coach Ed Orgeron said, "We're going to see if he can do something" on Tuesday. The apparent answer is the junior was not ready to join practice.

Before the practice, Ensminger said he was confident Edwards-Helair will play. Instead, Ensminger may need a backup plan to keep his dream offense on the move. It's no easy assignment for the offensive coordinator, because the LSU spread offense has set a high standard in 2019. The Tigers lead the nation in total offense. They rank second in passing and third in scoring while producing the Heisman Trophy winner in Joe Burrow and the Biletnikoff Award winner in wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. A committee led by freshmen Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery Jr. may take over at running back. The third member of the committee would be Chris Curry. - AP College Football

Top-ranked LSU's leading rusher Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off crutches but still may miss Saturday's Peach Bowl playoff semifinal against No. 4 Oklahoma. The Sooners, meanwhile, will be missing starting defensive end Ronnie Perkins and two backups due to suspensions. Edwards-Helaire suffered a hamstring injury in practice last week. He was only an observer for LSU's first practice in Atlanta on Monday. He leads the undefeated Tigers (13-0) with 1,290 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. LSU coach Ed Orgeron says Edwards-Helaire is “a little bit better" and he described the running back's status as day to day. "We're going to see if he can do something tomorrow," Orgeron said.

Based on Orgeron's comments, it would be a surprise if Edwards-Helaire plays. The coach spoke of the junior first-team All-SEC player in the past tense when comparing his running backs, including freshman backups Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery. "I think all three of those guys do different things," Orgeron said. "With Clyde, he did everything well. He blocked well. He ran inside, he ran outside and caught the football. We'll have to adjust if Clyde doesn't play to rotate those guys and do what they do best." Quarterback Joe Burrow was second on the team with 289 yards rushing. Davis-Price ran for 270 yards with six touchdowns and could be the leader of a running back committee if Edwards-Helaire can't play. - AP College Football
