The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the prestigious Biletnikoff Award, has released the 2020 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List. The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football's outstanding receiver, not merely college football's outstanding wide receiver.

The name Biletnikoff is synonymous with the term receiver. Fred Biletnikoff, a member of the pro and college football halls of fame, was a consensus All-America receiver at Florida State University, and an All-Pro receiver for the Oakland Raiders. He caught 589 passes for 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns in his 14-year Raiders career from 1965 through 1978. Fred was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XI. - The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation

  07/14/20 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Quarterback Jayden Daniels had a stellar season as a true freshman in 2019, leading the Sun Devils to some riveting, last-second victories and an 8-5 showing that featured a Sun Bowl victory. That has him on everyone's radar coming into a new season. He is one of 30 student-athletes named to the 2020 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list announced Tuesday. The San Bernardino, California native threw for 2,943 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2019 as a true freshman. He had just two interceptions, the fewest in school history by a quarterback throwing 300 or more passes in a season. And one of those was a Hail Mary at the end of a half. - AZCentral.com

LSU safety JaCoby Stevens, cornerback Derek Stingley and linebacker Jabril Cox have each been named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, the school announced Monday morning. The Bednarik Award is given annually to the nation's Defensive Player of the Year. The Tigers have had two players win the award - safety Tyrann Mathieu (2011) and cornerback Patrick Peterson (2010) - since it was first given in 1995. Stingley was voted a consensus All-American as a true freshman and was unanimously named the Southeastern Conference's Newcomer of the Year. He led the league with six interceptions, which ranked fifth nationally, and ranked second nationally with 21 passes defended. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Dunham School graduate is thought to have been the most impactful and decorated true freshman in the history of the program. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  07/07/20 - Liam ShanahanrSr/2022, LSU, 6-5, 305 (DS#14 C) + More +

Harvard graduate transfer Liam Shanahan has been taking snaps at center, a position of need for LSU, and Tigers coach Ed Orgeron spoke Tuesday morning as if Shanahan had a shot at being the starter this season. It's a position Shanahan didn't play at Harvard, according to the school's records, but the 6-foot-5, 310-pound Massachusetts native is now in the mix to replace two-year starter Lloyd Cushenberry, who left after his junior season for the NFL draft. Orgeron said he's heard Shanahan has been "snapping well" in the time he's spent with other players leading up to the six-week preseason plan that's set to start July 24. Orgeron said on 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench," he's "very impressed with the young man so far, but he's got to go through camp and get it done." "We feel that he for sure can make the calls and be a leader for us," Orgeron said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/16/20 - Noah CainrSr/2024, LSU, 5-10, 222 (DS#40 RB) + More +

Noah Cain made it a point as a true freshman last year to prove to his coaches that he was mentally mature. Then, during the offseason, his body physically matured. The combination could contribute to a breakout 2020 for a player who showed plenty of promise in limited action in his first college playing time. Cain is 15-20 pounds heavier than the 205-208 he was last year, the 5-foot-10 running back said during a video conference call with media Tuesday. "As time went on, I kind of got rid of some baby fat and became more and more lean," said Cain, who was a four-star recruit from Baton Rougue, La. "And this offseason, I was actually surprised (to gain mass). I was eating right and everything, and as weeks went on I kept gaining three or four pounds here and there. "At first I don't want the (added) weight, but it was natural weight. My body maturing, I guess, and come March I noticed I was 223. That's a big jump from what I was at last season. And as time went on, my body started to adjust to it. I'm excited with what I am at right now. I can't wait to get on the field. I feel more explosive and lean right now than I have ever been." - Tribune Review

  06/16/20 - Kevin FaulkSr/1999, LSU, 5-08, 205 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Kevin Faulk, LSU's running backs coach and all-time leading rusher, received a spot on the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. The National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame announced the ballot Tuesday. It included 177 players and 40 coaches. The 2021 class will be announced early next year. Faulk finished his LSU career as the most productive running back in school history. During his three-year stint, Faulk rushed for a school-record 4,557 yards and 46 touchdowns. Faulk still holds 10 school records and leads the Southeastern Conference in all-purpose yards with 6,833.

Faulk received first-team Associated Press All-America recognition in 1996 as an all-purpose back. After his LSU career, Faulk played 13 seasons with the New England Patriots. He won three Super Bowls. The Patriots inducted Faulk into their franchise Hall of Fame. Faulk started a coaching career after he retired from the NFL in 2012. He worked his way up from the high school ranks to LSU. This year, coach Ed Orgeron promoted him to running backs coach. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/12/20 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

After turning in arguably the best season for a collegiate quarterback, former LSU star Joe Burrow was selected unanimously as the Allstate Sugar Bowl's James J. Corbett Award winner on Friday morning. The honor is presented to the top amateur athlete in the state of Louisiana. Burrow, a native of Athens, Ohio, set an FBS record of 60 touchdown passes while leading the nation with 5,671 yards passing (an LSU and SEC record, and the third most all-time) while narrowly missing setting the FBS record for completion percentage - he finished at 76.3% after completing 402 of 527 attempts. Burrow led the Tigers to a 15-0 season, including a 42-25 win over Clemson in the College Football Playoff national championship. Burrow was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship game after throwing for 463 yards and five touchdowns.

"I still can't believe how everything came together for me at LSU," Burrow said. "I had the opportunity to join an amazing team and together we reached and surpassed all of our goals. The state of Louisiana embraced me along the way and became a second home to me. To be recognized as the top athlete in the state is a tremendous honor and I want to thank my teammates and coaches as well as everyone who supported me." LSU coach Ed Orgeron praised Burrow's work ethic. "I've never been around a player like Joe," Orgeron said, "and obviously he's very talented and he's a leader, but day in and day out, he's the same guy. Very focused. Focused on the task at hand. It's about execution and winning and being great. The guy is a perfectionist. It does rub off on our football team. He's an outstanding leader." - Baton Rouge Advocate

SEC Media Days will take place in a virtual format for the first time this year due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, it was announced Wednesday. The annual football kickoff event had been scheduled for July 13-16 at the College Football Hall of Fame and Omni Hotel in Atlanta. The dates and times for the virtual SEC Media Days will be announced at a later date. "Conducting football media days in a virtual format will provide us the opportunity to manage the event in a healthy manner as we continue to be impacted by COVID-19, and will provide flexibility for our programs to adjust their preparation for the 2020 football season according to the preseason calendar that is expected to be expanded due to the cancellation of the spring football season," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. "We look forward to returning to our traditional media days format in 2021." The virtual event will include Sankey's "State of the SEC" address, as well as media sessions with the league's 14 head football coaches and select student-athletes. SEC Network will once again provide television coverage. - Birmingham News
