Adrian Martinez passed for 246 yards and rushed for 77, and Chris Tennant kicked a late field goal to lead No. 20 Kansas State to a 10-9 win over Big 12 rival Iowa State on Saturday night. Tennant kicked a 30-yard field goal with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter to rally Kansas State (5-1, 3-0) for the win. The Wildcats' offense was defined by two chaotic plays. The Wildcats scored when Martinez ducked under a potential sack, then heaved the ball to a leaping Phillip Brooks, who maintained his balance and raced downfield for an 81-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, Martinez found Malik Knowles for a 68-yard gain. But Knowles fumbled before crossing the goal line. Iowa State's Anthony Johnson punched the ball out and Colby Reeder recovered in the end zone. Martinez finished 12-of-19 passing and rushed 19 times. The Cyclone (3-3, 0-3) have scored just one touchdown in their last 20 possessions. Jace Gilbert made three field goals to give Iowa State a 9-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Gilbert missed three times a week earlier at Kansas, including a potential game-tying kink in the closing seconds. - Kansas State/AP College Football

  10/07/22 - Will HonasrSr/2023, Kansas State, 6-1, 233 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

It is beginning to sound like Kansas State will be without one of its most experienced players for the remainder of the season. Will Honas, a 6-foot-2 and 233-pound linebacker from Wichita, is not expected to suit up for the Wildcats anytime soon. "I don't believe so," K-State football coach Chris Klieman said on Tuesday. "I think the injuries that Will has had are probably not going to allow for him to move forward. We are still holding out hope, but he has had quite a bit of damage on some injuries throughout his time." Honas enrolled at K-State in the spring after beginning his college football career at Butler Community College and then spending the next four seasons at Nebraska.

He was expected to make an impact on defense for the Wildcats in his final year of eligibility...if he could stay healthy. But things haven't played out that way. "It has been tough on him, I know that," Klieman said. "He has been at every game and at every practice. It is probably not responding the way he hoped it would." Honas, who suffered multiple season-ending injuries while he was with the Cornhuskers, was limited during preseason practices as he dealt with nagging knee injuries. Those issued lingered into the season, and he has been unable to suit up for any of K-State's first five games. The Wildcats had high hopes for Honas when he decided to transfer to K-State. Honas made 144 tackles, including four sacks, during his time with the Huskers. - The Kansas City Star

OCT 3 BIG 12 CO-NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Adrian Martinez, K-State, QB, Sr.,...Martinez rushed for a career-high 171 yards and three touchdowns, while he completed 12-of-19 passes for 116 yards and a score in No. 25 K-State's 37-28 win over TTU. His 171 rushing yards were the fifth most in a game in school history and the most since Daniel Sams had 199 rushing yards against Baylor in 2013. Coupled with his 148 rushing yards last week at Oklahoma, it was the first time a K-State quarterback had consecutive 100-yard rushing games since Jesse Ertz in 2016 (106 vs. Iowa State; 153 vs. Oklahoma State), while it was the first time in Martinez's career to have back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. With a 69-yard run and his 55-yarder last week, he became the first K-State player with a run of at least 55 yards in consecutive games since James Johnson in 2007 (66 yards vs. Missouri; 67 yards at Fresno State). It was also the first time in Martinez's 44-game career to have a rush of at least 55 yards in consecutive games. He is one of just three Autonomy 5 quarterbacks over the past 15 seasons to total 300 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in a two-game span, joining Louisville's Lamar Jackson in 2016 and Auburn's Cam Newton in 2010. - Big 12 Football

Cephas saved his best for the second half, amassing 11 catches and 230 yards after the intermission. Highlighting his day was an acrobatic 29-yard TD catch where he shook off an interfering defender and made a remarkable catch in the endzone and staying in bounds.   Kent State's Dante Cephas set the national season high for receiving yards with his 246 against Ohio. His 13 catches are tied for second most in an FBS game. Cephas, averaging a Mid-American Conference-leading 100.2 yards receiving per game, broke the school single-game record set by Eugene Baker in 1997. Cephas did most of his work in the second half, when he caught 11 balls for 230 yards. - AP College Football

Marquez Cooper rushed for a career-high 240 yards including the winning touchdown in overtime, Dante Cephas made several clutch catches on his way to personal best 246 yards receiving and Kent State defeated Ohio 31-24 on Saturday in a Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. After Kent State (2-3, 1-0) had a 47-yard field-goal attempt blocked to finish a wild final four minutes of regulation, Cephas made a catch and struggled through several defenders to reach the Ohio 1-yard line on the first play of overtime. It took three plays before Cooper scored. Ohio (2-3, 0-1) reached the 5-yard line on its overtime possession but three straight incompletions ended the Bobcats' bid.

Ohio was leading 17-10 late in the fourth quarter when Cephas tied the game with a sterling 29-yard catch on the right edge of the end zone. Ohio responded on its next play from scrimmage with Kurtis Rourke connecting on a 71-yard touchdown pass play with Sam Wiglusz. Schlee tied the game with a 2-yard run, covering the final 36 yards of the 75-yard drive himself on the ground after Devontez Walker made a pair of big receptions. Schlee threw for a career-high 398 yards and Walker had 107 yards receiving, another career high. Rourke threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns for Ohio with Wiglusz collecting a career-high 115 yards receiving and Sieh Bangura adding 99 yards rushing. Kent State had 736 yards of offense to Ohio's 450. - Kent State/AP College Football

Adrian Martinez rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score, leading No. 25 Kansas State past Texas Tech 37-28 on Saturday. Martinez was 12-for-19 passing for 116 yards for Kansas State (4-1, 2-0 Big 12), while Deuce Vaughn had 170 rushing yards for the Wildcats, who extended their winning streak against the Red Raiders to seven games. Donovan Smith was 34-for-48 passing for 359 yards and two TDs for Texas Tech (3-2, 1-1). Smith also rushed for a touchdown. Martinez raced 57 yards on the first play of the game, then capped it with an 18-yard touchdown on the second play, giving K-State a quick 7-0 lead. The Wildcats also got three field goals from Chris Tennant after drives stalled.

Tech cut the lead to 13-7 with 1:24 left in the first half. After gaining just 48 yards of total offense, the Red Raiders went 86 yards on nine plays, capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Nehemiah Martinez. Trey Wolff kicked a 51-yard field goal for Tech before the break, then tied the score at 20-20 with a 39-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. K-State answered with its second two-play drive of the game. Vaughn ran 69 yards to the Tech 8-yard line on the first play after the kickoff. Following an offensive holding penalty, Martinez found Phillip Brooks with an 18-yard touchdown pass. The lead didn't last long, as Smith hit Xavier White with a 12-yard touchdown pass to cap a seven-play, 75-yard drive. Wolff missed a 42-yard field goal, denying Tech its first lead of the game. Martinez then scored on his second big run of the day, 69 yards untouched up the middle of the field. Tennant's 32-yard field goal gave the Wildcats a 30-20 lead with 9:07 left. A fumble on the next series gave K-State the ball at the Tech 27-yard line and the Wildcats iced the game with Martinez's third rushing touchdown. - - Kansas State/AP College Football

SEPT 26 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: K-State's Adrian Martinez accounted for 382 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in Kansas State's 41-34 road win at No. 6 Oklahoma. He was 21-34 with one TD through the air while rushing for 148 yards on 21 carries with four scores. The transfer senior's four rushing TDs set a career-high and were the most by a Wildcat since Skylar Thompson's four at OU in 2019.   Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez ran for 148 yards and four touchdowns, and the Wildcats stunned No. 6 Oklahoma 41-34 on Saturday night. Martinez also passed for 234 yards and a score and Deuce Vaughn rushed for 116 yards for the Wildcats (3-1, 1-0 Big 12). It was first-year Oklahoma coach Brent Venables' first loss as a head coach, and it came against his alma mater. Kansas State also beat Oklahoma in 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2020. Dillon Gabriel passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns and Eric Gray ran for 114 yards for the Sooners (3-1, 0-1).

Kansas State broke out to a 14-0 lead about nine minutes into the game behind Martinez's 6-yard touchdown run and 6-yard scoring pass to Malik Knowles. The Wildcats gained 279 yards in the first half to take a 24-17 lead at the break. Martinez scored his third touchdown run of the game from 15 yards out to put Kansas State up 34-20 over Oklahoma with 8 minutes to play. Gabriel found Brayden Willis for a 1-yard touchdown pass with 4:36 remaining to cut Kansas State's lead to 34-27. But on Kansas State's next possession, Martinez broke loose for 55 yards on a third-and-16. He finished the drive with a 1-yard scoring run - his fourth rushing touchdown of the game. Gabriel found Willis for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds left, and the Sooners cut the deficit to 41-34. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Deuce Vaughn ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns, the Kansas State defense picked off Missouri on four straight possessions in the second half, and the Wildcats blew out the Tigers 40-12 on Saturday in the first meeting of old Big 12 rivals in more than a decade. Adrian Martinez added 101 yards passing while running for a touchdown, and Phillip Brooks returned a punt 76 yards for another score, as the Wildcats (2-0) weathered a long lightning delay to finish off a dominant performance. They picked off Brady Cook twice in the second half, then did the same to backup Jack Abraham, before Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz put his starter back in for the fourth quarter. But by that point, the Wildcats had extended their lead to 33-6 and the only drama left was whether they would keep the Tigers (1-1) out of the end zone.

The Tigers finally got in on the game's final play, thanks to an untimed down because of a penalty. Cook finished 15 of 27 for 128 yards while Abraham missed all three of his throws - unless you count the two caught by the Wildcats. Cook did have 56 yards rushing, but a good chunk of that came while running from pressure. The game began under light rain that soon turned into a driving storm, making things seem even worse for the Tigers. They drove for a field goal to open the game, then punted four straight times; three of those were three-and-outs. Meanwhile, the Kansas State offense plugged along with ruthless efficiency. - Kansas State/AP College Football

  09/07/22 - Taylor PoitierrSr/2026, Kansas State, 6-2, 310 (DS#69 OG) + More +

Offensive lineman Taylor Poitier didn't play in a single game for the Kansas State football team last season after he suffered a torn ACL in training camp. The junior saw action in one game this year before his season was cut short because of the exact same injury. "It's a cruel thing, man," K-State football coach Chris Klieman said on Tuesday. "He tore a knee again and he will be out for the season. It's an awful outcome. Sometimes the cruelest things happen to the best kids." Poitier, a 6-foot-3 and 291-pound right guard who played for Bishop Miege High School, injured his lower body during K-State's 34-0 victory over South Dakota on Saturday. The injury occurred in the second quarter. He walked off the field under his own power, but he was unable to return to the game. A trainer escorted him to the team's locker room, signaling that he might be dealing with a significant injury. - Kansas City Star

  09/03/22 - *Deuce VaughnJr/2023, Kansas State, 5-05, 179 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Chris Klieman thought Kansas State had a nice set of offensive plays ready for the opening series of the season. The Wildcats only got to call one of them Saturday night. That's because Malik Knowles took the opening handoff 75 yards for a score, setting the tone for the rest of the game, and Deuce Vaughn proceeded to run for 126 yards and another touchdown in a 34-0 rout of overmatched South Dakota. "We won the toss, took the football and scored on the first play," Klieman said with a smile. "We had a really nice series of plays that we were going to operate and we ended up scoring on the first play." Not that the Wildcats ever slowed down.

Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez, who was just 11 of 15 for 53 yards through the air, added 39 yards rushing and a touchdown for Kansas State. Desmond Purnell returned an early blocked punt for a touchdown, and backup running back DJ Giddens reached the end zone midway through the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-0. By that point, the Wildcats had built such a comfortable lead that they began resting their starters, and they in turn began thinking ahead to next weekend. Former conference rival Missouri is returning for the first time in more than a decade. "I know they're a really good program, lots of talent," Klieman said. "I'm excited to have that rivalry game played again." Carson Camp had 139 yards passing and an interception for the Coyotes, who couldn't overcome an abundance of dropped passes, silly penalties and other miscues against a team that expects to contend for the Big 12 title. - Kansas State/AP College Football
