Josh Hayes, a transfer cornerback from North Dakota State, will join the Virginia football program in the fall. UVa announced the news Saturday morning. Hayes has one season of eligibility remaining and will enroll at UVa in the summer. The defensive back comes to UVa after a productive career for the top program in the FCS. He played in six of NDSU's games in 2020-21, recording 30 tackles and three pass breakups. He entered the transfer portal earlier this month. Hayes played in 52 consecutive games for the Bison before deciding to enter the transfer portal this spring. The Florida native will now have a chance to showcase his skills against Power 5 foes. The corner is the latest FCS transfer to join Virginia. James Madison transfers D'Angelo Amos and Adeeb Atariwa both played significant snaps on the Cavaliers' defense in 2020. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

This spring, coaches and players alike have said Martinez looks like he's got some pep in his step and in his arm. What does that mean in the grand scheme of things? Yeah, it's spring ball and Week 1 is a long way off, but it can't hurt that the general consensus is that Martinez has looked good. Lubick added his thoughts on Wednesday. "I thought he had a good last year, especially with his completion percentage and really toward the end of the year," Lubick said. "He's taken it to another level from a leadership standpoint and an accuracy standpoint. I even think from a fitness standpoint. I already knew he was a good athlete and he was fast, but he looks even a step faster. "He's throwing balls on time and he's really making the receivers and tight ends and everyone look good because he's putting the ball where it's supposed to be on a consistent basis."

Timely throws come when a quarterback is making decisions on schedule, something that head coach Scott Frost, quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco and Martinez himself have all talked about many times over the past two years. Martinez has the arm to make any throw required, he just at times either has not been decisive enough or has struggled to consistently harness his mechanics. "He's always had great zip and arm strength - I think NFL arm strength - but the thing that I've noticed is he's taken his accuracy another step," Lubick said. "When he has to put touch on the ball, he can put touch on the ball. That's why we've been able to complete more deep balls than in the past. Kansas State added some new blood to its wide receiver room Monday. Kade Warner, son of Pro Football Hall of Fame and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Kurt Warner, announced he had committed to the Wildcats. Warner will have two seasons of eligibility remaining when he arrives on campus. He spent the past four seasons at Nebraska. Warner, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound wide receiver, began his career in Lincoln, Neb., as a walk-on before he was placed on scholarship prior to the 2020 campaign. His teammates also voted him to serve as a team captain last season. He played in every game in 2020 and made four starts. Warner finished with five receptions for 40 yards. His best season with the Cornhuskers came in 2019, when he hauled in eight passes for a personal-best 101 yards, averaging 12.6 yards per catch. - Manhattan Mercury

Honas' return to use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA puts him in a unique position. He's a junior college player who now will log four seasons at a Division I college, too. Honas has steadily grown into a regular for the Huskers. He suffered a knee injury in 2018, played better late in the season in 2019 as he got back to fully healthy and then took another step forward in 2020. He's the bridge to a wave of young players, and he'll be looked to as the leader in Ruud's group this fall. Honas' return helped fortify what could end up being a deep group for the Huskers. Reimer burst onto the scene in 2020 and Ruud said the Lincoln North Star graduate's challenge is to be one of the best in the Big Ten. Henrich has moved between inside and outside, but settled in and played the best of his young career late in the season inside. Then there's Kolarevic, a graduate transfer from Northern Iowa who has two years of eligibility remaining and arrived on campus in January. - Lincoln Journal Star

Daniel Imatorbhebhe took a far more circuitous route to Manhattan. He originally signed with Florida out of high school. He went through spring practice with the Gators in 2015 before transferring to Southern California. He remained in Los Angeles through the 2019 season before transferring to Illinois. Now, he's a Wildcat. The program just hopes he can come close to replicating what Moore brought to the table last season. Moore caught 22 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns despite missing one game last fall. His three touchdown catches tied for the team high, while his yardage and reception totals ranked second. If Imatorbhebhe ends anywhere in the vicinity of those numbers in 2021, his season will be viewed as an unmitigated success. - Manhattan Mercury

Nebraska is losing an offensive captain to the NCAA's transfer portal. Junior wide receiver Kade Warner, the former walk-on wide receiver who earned a scholarship last year as much for his leadership as his on-field production, entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal on Tuesday. Warner acknowledged the move on social media and called it "the toughest decision I have ever had to make -- but I know it's the right one." Warner, a Scottsdale, Arizona, native, was one of NU's five captains in 2020, but his playing time diminished significantly as the season progressed. Kansas State's Deuce Vaughn picked up his latest accolade Monday, landing on the Football Writers Association of America's (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team. It marks the eighth time a Wildcat has been named to the team since the FWAA began picking freshman All-Americans in 2001. Vaughn rushed for 642 yards and seven touchdowns and hauled in 25 passes for 434 yards and two scores in 10 games this fall. His rushing and receiving yards were both team highs in 2020. Will Honas emerged as a staple of Nebraska's defense in 2020. Now he's poised to be just the same in 2021. The senior inside linebacker announced Thursday morning he's returning to school for an extra season and will be back with the Huskers for 2021. Honas is coming off his best collegiate season and will look to build on it thanks to the extra season of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the coronavirus pandemic. Former University of Iowa cornerback Julius Brents announced Tuesday night on Twitter that he is transferring to Kansas State. Brents was a four-star recruit from Indianapolis who played 11 games as a true freshman for the Hawkeyes in 2018 but just one in 2019 because of injury. He redshirted. Brents played extensively in Iowa's opener this past season against Purdue but was relegated to backup and special teams duties after that. Imatorbhebhe, the older brother of Josh, produced three catches for 54 yards and one touchdown across five games during his lone Illinois season. Monday was a productive day for the Arizona Wildcats football program. Just hours after the UA announced the finishing touches to Jedd Fisch's offensive staff, Arizona's new head coach landed his first recruit, when former Northwestern safety and Chandler High School product Gunner Maldonado posted on Twitter his decision to join the Wildcats. The 6-foot, 180-pound Maldonado, rated as a three-star safety in the 2020 recruiting cycle, was recruited by Arizona during the Kevin Sumlin era but chose Chicago's Wildcats over UA, Arizona State, Iowa State, Indiana and Memphis, among others. Lynch, the Wildcats' starting placekicker the past three seasons, announced Sunday he would forgo an extra season of eligibility to focus on preparing for this year's NFL draft.
