  The Illinois State football players and coaches had a lot to cheer about Sunday inside the Hancock Stadium Club, as the team was selected to play Southeast Missouri State in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Football Championship on Saturday, Nov. 30. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., CT, at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the contest will air live on ESPN3. The Redbirds (8-4, 5-3 MVFC) will be making their eighth appearance in the FCS playoffs (1998, 1999, 2006, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) and fifth under the leadership of head coach Brock Spack. Illinois State boasts a record of 8-7 all-time in the playoffs and have advanced to the quarterfinals five times, the semifinals twice and the FCS Championship once in 2014.

ISU, which was ranked No. 13 in the final regular-season poll released by STATS FCS, will take on the No. 12 ranked Redhawks (9-3, 7-1 OVC). SEMO earned a share of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference title with Austin Peay after beating Murray State on Saturday. The Redbirds and Redhawks will meet for the 11th time overall, with ISU holding a 7-3 advantage in the series. The two teams last met in 2001. - Illinois State Football

  James Robinson rushed for 155 yards to move into second on the Illinois State career list, Luther Kirk sealed it with a sack on fourth-and-goal in the closing seconds and the Redbirds held off Missouri State 17-12 on Saturday. Illinois State led 17-9 with 11:03 remaining in the fourth quarter but an interception and fumble on its next two possessions kept Missouri State in it. Robinson fumbled it at Illinois State's 32 with 2:17 remaining and Missouri State went eight plays to get to the 3 but Peyton Huslig rolled to his right and was tackled for a nine-yard loss on fourth down.

Brady Davis passed for 65 yards and two touchdowns for Illinois State (8-3, 5-2 Missouri Valley), which is ranked No. 8 in the FCS coaches' poll. The Redbirds had three players attempt a pass with Bryce Jefferson and Jack Baltz throwing interceptions. Robinson reached 100 yards, on 29 carries, for the sixth time this season.   NOV 11 MISSOURI VALLEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LB Dylan Draka, Illinois State, 6-0, 240, Jr., Wheeling, Illinois (Wheeling HS),...Draka did it all for the Redbirds in their big road win over No. 4 South Dakota State. The junior linebacker recorded five tackles, including four solo stops, and tallied three TFLs in the victory over the Jackrabbits. Draka was also credited with a forced fumble, a pass breakup and recovered a pair of fumbles for the Redbirds. His sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter set up Sam Fenlason's fourth field goal make of the contest to make the score 27-18. Draka and the Redbird defense forced four turnovers on the day and limited the Jackrabbits to just 81 yards rushing and 260 yards of total offense, who came into the contest averaging 234 yards on the ground and 422 total yards per game. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

  NOV 11 MISSOURI VALLEY SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: PK Sam Fenlason, Illinois State, 6-2, 225, Sr., San Diego, California (Idaho),...Fenlason was stellar in the Redbirds' big road win over No. South Dakota State. The senior placekicker tied his career high with four made field goals in the win over the Jackrabbits, including a career-long 46-yarder to clinch the victory. Fenlason's first field goal make of 33 yards cut the SDSU lead at halftime to just one at 11-10. A 32-yarder late in the third quarter trimmed the Jackrabbits' lead to 18-13 and his 37-yarder early in the fourth quarter cut the deficit to 18-16. He capped off his career day with the long 46-yard bomb with 6:33 left in the game to bring the score to its final at 27-18. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

  NOV 11 STATS FCS NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dylan Draka, Illinois State, LB, R-Jr., 6-0, 240, Wheeling, Illinois,...Draka led the way as Illinois State put the defensive clamps on then-No. 4 South Dakota State for a 27-18 victory in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Four of Draka's five tackles were solo stops and three went for loss, and he had a forced fumble, a pass breakup and a pair of fumble recoveries. His sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter set up a key field goal. The Redbirds limited South Dakota State well below its averages with just 81 rushing yards and 260 yards of offense.

  San Fenlason kicked four field goals, including three in the second half, to help No. 11 Illinois State to a 27-18 win over No. 4 South Dakota State in the Missouri Valley Football Conference on Saturday. The Redbirds (7-3, 4-2) scored on four straight possessions and ran out the clock after a missed field goal. South Dakota State (7-3, 4-2) had three-straight turnovers after taking an 18-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

After Pierre Strong's 4-yard run for SDSU's last points, the Redbirds answered with a Fenlason field goal. An interception by Christia Uphoff led to another field goal that cut the lead to 18-16. The Jackrabbits fumbled the ensuing kickoff, caused by Peyton Jones and recovered by Luke Bennyhoff, and Illinois Sate went 18 yards in six plays, capped by James Robinson's 1-yard run and a 2-point conversion. Dylan Draka forced and recovered a fumble on the SDSU 32 and Fenalson kicked his longest field goal, 46 yards. Illinois State had 302 yards of offense and just one turnover.   OCT 28 MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: RB James Robinson, Illinois State,...Robinson took the game over and helped Illinois State to its third-straight win with a strong game on the ground. Robinson averaged 9.0 yards per carry and finished the day with 180 yards and two touchdowns. A 41-yard carry set up his first touchdown of the day, a 1-yard physical run for the first score of the day, and he broke the game open with a 77-yard touchdown TD in the fourth quarter. DeForest tallied seven tackles, including six solo stops, including one for a loss against the Sycamores and he also recovered a fumble on the afternoon.   James Robinson and Jeff Proctor rushed for touchdowns as Illinois State turned three fumbles into second-half points, defeating Indiana State 24-7 on Saturday. The Redbirds (6-2, 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference) went into halftime tied 7-7 as Indiana State knotted the score with a 6-yard pass from Kurtis Wilderman to Dante Hendrix with 19 seconds left in the half. Illinois State, ranked seventh in the FCS Coaches Poll, dominated the second half, forcing three Sycamores (3-5, 1-3) fumbles. The first resulted in a 38-yard Sam Feniason field goal. Robinson broke free for a 77-yard TD run after the second, and the third and final fumble recovery led to Proctor's score from the 1. Aaron Mends forced a fumble on Indiana State's fourth play after halftime with Jason Lewan recovering. John Ridgeway forced the second fumble, ending an Indiana State threat by tackling Michael Haupert at the 12, with Ty DeForest recovering. And on the ensuing kickoff, the Sycamores' Chris Childers mishandled the catch and Clayton Isbell fell on the ball for Illinois State. - AP College Football

The Rockford, Illinois, native was held to just 68 yards on the ground but scored three times on the ground to up his season total to 12. Robinson's 16-yard score just over a minute into the game got things rolling for ISU and he later scored from two yards and seven yards out to post his second three-touchdown effort of the season.   James Robinson scored three rushing touchdowns, Jeff Proctor added a fourth on the ground, and Illinois State defeated Western Illinois 28-14 on Saturday. Illinois State (5-2, 2-1 Missouri Valley), ranked 11th in the STATS FCS Top 25, led 14-0 at halftime on two of Robinson's TDs before Western Illinois broke through with a DeShon Gavin 2-yard scoring run and trailed 14-7 heading to the fourth.

Robinson and Proctor both scored in the final period for a 28-7 lead then Connor Sampson hit George Wahee for 4 yards and a WIU touchdown with 5:57 remaining. WIU had one more possession that ended on downs at the Illinois State 45 with 2:39 to go. Western Illinois had a significant advantage in total yards (375-279), first downs (24-15) and offensive plays (86-58) but committed five turnovers, losing three fumbles and throwing two interceptions. The Redbirds scored on three short drives following turnovers and intercepted a pass at their own 1-yard line to thwart a drive by the Leathernecks (0-7, 0-3). - AP College Football

It marked Robinson's third 100-plus yard rushing effort of the season and his fifth-straight with over 90 yards or more on the ground. The Newark, New Jersey, native was all over the stat sheet with two solo tackles, one sack, one TFL and an interception for the Redbirds. Simon's interception late in the second quarter kept the Salukis out of the end zone as the Redbirds were able to take a knee and a 14-0 advantage at halftime.   Brady Davis passed for one touchdown and ran for another and the Illinois State defense held on downs twice in the fourth quarter in a 21-7 victory over Southern Illinois on Saturday. After trailing 14-0 at halftime, Southern Illinois scored on a 74-yard run by Romeir Elliott early in the third quarter. Levi Mitchell recovered an on-side kick after that score but the Salukis were forced to punt. Illinois State responded with an 11-play, 95-yard drive culminating in a 6-yard TD run by Davis.

With FCS No. 13 Illinois State (4-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley) still leading 21-7, the Salukis drove deep into Redbirds territory twice in the fourth quarter. The first drive was stalled by two chop-block penalties and the second drive ended on a 4th-down sack at the 16-yard line with about a minute remaining. The Redbirds' James Robinson gained 150 yards on 31 carries and moved into third place on the school's career rushing list. Robinson scored on a 2-yard run and Davis threw to Austin Nagel for a 2-yard touchdown for Illinois State's 14-0 halftime lead. Southern Illinois (2-4, 0-2) leads the series between in-state rivals 41-38-3 but Illinois State has won five of the last six meetings.
