  2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: James Robinson, RB, Illinois State,...Robinson is the second Redbird player invited to the NFL combine in the past three seasons, as Davontae Harris made the most of his 2018 invite and was drafted in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Robinson will work out at the NFL Combine along with the other running backs, offensive linemen, place kickers and special teamers on Friday, Feb. 28. He will be joined at the combine by fellow Missouri Valley Football Conference stars in North Dakota State defensive end Derrek Tuszka and Southern Illinois safety Jeremy Chinn.

The Rockford, Illinois, native started all 15 games at running back for the Redbirds and led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in rushing yards (1,899), yards per game (126.6) and touchdowns (18). The three-time All-MVFC selection (2017-19) and two-time Walter Payton Award finalist recorded eight 100-plus yard rushing efforts, including a pair of 200-plus yard efforts in the first and second round of the FCS playoffs that included a school-record breaking 297-yard effort in the first-round with at SEMO. Robinson finished the season ranked No. 2 in the FCS in rushing yards and yards per game and sixth in rushing touchdowns.   James Robinson rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns and Illinois State knocked off eighth-seeded Central Arkansas 24-14 on Saturday in the second round of the FCS playoffs. Robinson, the second-leading rusher in the FCS who set a school record with 297 yards in a first-round victory over Southeast Missouri, scored two of the Redbirds' three second-quarter touchdowns, one on a 51-yard run. His 2-yard score came with 1:13 left in the half for a 21-7 lead. The other score was an 18-yard run by wide receiver Austin Nagel on a jet sweep. San Fenlason added a 24-yard field goal with just over four minutes left in the game before Breylin Smith passed to Luke Ross for a 1-yard score with 1:32 remaining. The Bears (9-4) got the onside kick but an interception ended their hopes of making the quarterfinals for the first time. Smith threw for 198 yards but was intercepted three times.   James Robinson rushed for 297 yards on 41 carries - both career highs - and Illinois State beat Southeast Missouri 24-6 on Saturday in a first-round FCS playoff game. The Redbirds (9-4), who finished in a three-way tie for third in the Missouri Valley Conference, advance to play at No. 8 seed Central Arkansas next Saturday. Robinson's previous highs were 256 yards and 29 carries. He scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter and the Redbirds led the rest of the way, taking a 21-3 halftime lead on a 16-yard run by Bryce Jefferson and a 33-yard pass from Jefferson to Andrew Edgar with 1:25 left in the second quarter. Joe Pyle started in place of banged-up SEMO quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and threw for 124 yards.   The Illinois State football players and coaches had a lot to cheer about Sunday inside the Hancock Stadium Club, as the team was selected to play Southeast Missouri State in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Football Championship on Saturday, Nov. 30. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., CT, at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the contest will air live on ESPN3. The Redbirds (8-4, 5-3 MVFC) will be making their eighth appearance in the FCS playoffs (1998, 1999, 2006, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) and fifth under the leadership of head coach Brock Spack. Illinois State boasts a record of 8-7 all-time in the playoffs and have advanced to the quarterfinals five times, the semifinals twice and the FCS Championship once in 2014.

ISU, which was ranked No. 13 in the final regular-season poll released by STATS FCS, will take on the No. 12 ranked Redhawks (9-3, 7-1 OVC). SEMO earned a share of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference title with Austin Peay after beating Murray State on Saturday. The Redbirds and Redhawks will meet for the 11th time overall, with ISU holding a 7-3 advantage in the series. The two teams last met in 2001. - Illinois State Football

  James Robinson rushed for 155 yards to move into second on the Illinois State career list, Luther Kirk sealed it with a sack on fourth-and-goal in the closing seconds and the Redbirds held off Missouri State 17-12 on Saturday. Illinois State led 17-9 with 11:03 remaining in the fourth quarter but an interception and fumble on its next two possessions kept Missouri State in it. Robinson fumbled it at Illinois State's 32 with 2:17 remaining and Missouri State went eight plays to get to the 3 but Peyton Huslig rolled to his right and was tackled for a nine-yard loss on fourth down.

Brady Davis passed for 65 yards and two touchdowns for Illinois State (8-3, 5-2 Missouri Valley), which is ranked No. 8 in the FCS coaches' poll. The Redbirds had three players attempt a pass with Bryce Jefferson and Jack Baltz throwing interceptions. Robinson reached 100 yards, on 29 carries, for the sixth time this season.   San Fenlason kicked four field goals, including three in the second half, to help No. 11 Illinois State to a 27-18 win over No. 4 South Dakota State in the Missouri Valley Football Conference on Saturday. The Redbirds (7-3, 4-2) scored on four straight possessions and ran out the clock after a missed field goal. South Dakota State (7-3, 4-2) had three-straight turnovers after taking an 18-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

After Pierre Strong's 4-yard run for SDSU's last points, the Redbirds answered with a Fenlason field goal. An interception by Christia Uphoff led to another field goal that cut the lead to 18-16. The Jackrabbits fumbled the ensuing kickoff, caused by Peyton Jones and recovered by Luke Bennyhoff, and Illinois Sate went 18 yards in six plays, capped by James Robinson's 1-yard run and a 2-point conversion. Dylan Draka forced and recovered a fumble on the SDSU 32 and Fenalson kicked his longest field goal, 46 yards. Illinois State had 302 yards of offense and just one turnover. Robinson averaged 9.0 yards per carry and finished the day with 180 yards and two touchdowns.   James Robinson and Jeff Proctor rushed for touchdowns as Illinois State turned three fumbles into second-half points, defeating Indiana State 24-7 on Saturday. The Redbirds (6-2, 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference) went into halftime tied 7-7 as Indiana State knotted the score with a 6-yard pass from Kurtis Wilderman to Dante Hendrix with 19 seconds left in the half. Illinois State, ranked seventh in the FCS Coaches Poll, dominated the second half, forcing three Sycamores (3-5, 1-3) fumbles. The first resulted in a 38-yard Sam Feniason field goal. Robinson broke free for a 77-yard TD run after the second, and the third and final fumble recovery led to Proctor's score from the 1. Aaron Mends forced a fumble on Indiana State's fourth play after halftime with Jason Lewan recovering. John Ridgeway forced the second fumble, ending an Indiana State threat by tackling Michael Haupert at the 12, with Ty DeForest recovering.   James Robinson scored three rushing touchdowns, Jeff Proctor added a fourth on the ground, and Illinois State defeated Western Illinois 28-14 on Saturday. Illinois State (5-2, 2-1 Missouri Valley), ranked 11th in the STATS FCS Top 25, led 14-0 at halftime on two of Robinson's TDs before Western Illinois broke through with a DeShon Gavin 2-yard scoring run and trailed 14-7 heading to the fourth.

Robinson and Proctor both scored in the final period for a 28-7 lead then Connor Sampson hit George Wahee for 4 yards and a WIU touchdown with 5:57 remaining. WIU had one more possession that ended on downs at the Illinois State 45 with 2:39 to go. Western Illinois had a significant advantage in total yards (375-279), first downs (24-15) and offensive plays (86-58) but committed five turnovers, losing three fumbles and throwing two interceptions. The Rockford, Illinois, native scored all three of ISU's touchdowns in the victory, as the Redbirds extended their winning streak over EIU to three in a row. Robinson finished the day with 146 yards on 23 carries (6.3 per carry) and found the end zone three times for the second week in a row.

He scored the game's first touchdown in the first quarter from six yards out, added another from seven yards out in the second quarter and then capped off his day with an impressive 52-yard run in the third quarter to put the game away.   James Robinson ran for three touchdowns and Illinois State beat Eastern Illinois 21-3 on Saturday. It was Robinson's second straight game with three TD runs for the FCS 13th-ranked Redbirds (2-1), who won their 12th straight home opener. Robinson had a pair of short scoring runs in the first half and broke loose with a 52-yard score early in the third quarter that capped the scoring. He finished with 146 yards rushing on 23 carries. Jeff Proctor had 71 yards on the ground and Brady Davis added another 39 yards on 10 carries and was 5-of-11 passing for 31 yards.

Illinois State held Eastern Illinois (0-3) to 197 yards of offense and sacked Johnathan Brantley six times. The Panthers crossed into Illinois State territory just twice in the second half. One drive ended on Josh Delgado's missed 29-yard field goal attempt, and the second stalled at the Redbirds 25 with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-7.   James Robinson ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns as Illinois State built a 35-0 lead and rolled to a 42-14 win over Morehead State in the Redbirds' home opener Saturday night. Illinois State bounced back from a tough loss at Northern Illinois in its opener. The Redbirds have won three of their four meetings with Morehead State. Robinson capped Illinois State's first drive, racing the final 16 yards for the score barely three minutes into the game.

Tuvone Davis picked off a Mark Pappas pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown a minute later and quarterback Brady Davis ran 52 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 after a quarter, then passed 11 yards to Andrew Edgar for a touchdown in the second. Robinson scored his second TD of the half on a 34-yard run. He capped the scoring for Illinois State with a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter.   The Missouri Valley Football Conference has announced its preseason All-Conference Team (offense only today). Counting both the offensive and defensive units (defense will be announced Wednesday) North Dakota State tops the league with nine total selections, including a league-best six on the first-team unit. Illinois State and South Dakota State, meanwhile, have the second-most selections, with eight total honorees each.
