With the excitement surrounding University of Houston Football's inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference building, Cougar fans have responded in strong numbers ahead of Monday's official on-sale date to the public. Since Feb. 1, more than 2,100 new season ticket deposits have been placed to see the Cougars face UTSA (Sept. 2), TCU (Sept. 16), Sam Houston (Sept. 23), West Virginia (Oct. 12), Texas (Oct. 21), Cincinnati (Nov. 11) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 18) at TDECU Stadium this fall.

More than 1,700 season ticket holders have renewed for the 2023 campaign and added nearly 200 additional tickets as part of their purchase. On Wednesday, individuals who signed up for the $75 waitlist began selecting seats with 1,200+ new season tickets being purchased. Want to watch the University of Houston's first football season in the Big 12? It's going to cost a little extra. The price for UH season tickets at TDECU Stadium will increase by an average 14 percent for the 2023 season, the school announced Friday. "This is an exciting and historic time to be a part of the University of Houston family, as we formally join the Big 12," Chris Pezman, vice president for athletics, wrote in an email to season ticket holders explaining the price bump. Season-ticket renewals begin Monday. The general public can purchase season tickets beginning Feb. 20.

Along with admittance into a Power Five conference, the Big 12 move allows UH to renew in-state rivalries and offer the most attractive home schedule in decades, a seven-game slate highlighted by visits from the University of Texas and TCU. The 14-percent increase is for a six-game home schedule: Big 12 games against TCU (Sept. 16), West Virginia (Oct. 12), Cincinnati (Nov. 11) Oklahoma State (Nov. 18) and non-conference games against UTSA (Sept. 2) and Sam Houston (Sept. 23). - Houston Chronicle

Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman is not expected to play baseball for the Aggies this spring, head coach Jim Schlossnagle confirmed Tuesday. Weigman moved into the starting quarterback role for the Aggies midway through the season this fall and with the departure of quarterback Haynes King by way of transfer has the edge on keeping the job next season. The Aggies also return transfer quarterback Max Johnson next season.

Weigman played in five games for the football team this season, throwing for 896 yards and eight touchdowns. The true freshman completed 73 of 132 passes. Weigman played shortstop for Bridgeland High School and was rated the 40th overall prospect in the state of Texas and 11th in his position in the class of 2022, according to Perfect Game. He was recruited to A&M as a two-sport athlete but did not play baseball last spring as an early enrollee while he integrated himself into the football program. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Oklahoma State sophomore wideout John Paul Richardson entered the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon, and that was only the beginning of the losses for the Cowboys' receiving room. ESPN's Tom VanHaaren reported early Tuesday morning that fellow sophomore wide receiver Bryson Green was entering the portal. Shortly after, true freshman standout receiver Stephon Johnson Jr. shared that he was joining Richardson and Green in the portal via Twitter.

Out of Allen, Texas, Green made an immediate impact on the program. In his freshman campaign, he turned 12 appearances into 12 catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. This fall, Green was OSU's second-leading receiver with 584 yards and five touchdowns on 36 receptions. Johnson was figured to be one of the Cowboys' top wideouts in the coming years, using his first season on campus to reel in 17 receptions for 293 yards and two scores. - Stillwater Press

Clayton Tune connected with Nathaniel Dell for a 12-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining, and Houston rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Louisiana-Lafayette 23-16 in the Independence Bowl on Friday. The TD pass was Tune's third of the game and 40th of the season, tying him with Western Kentucky's Austin Reed for the most in the nation. Before the winning throw, he completed a 41-yard pass to KeSean Carter on third-and-30 to move Houston into Ragin' Cajuns territory. The Cougars (8-5) never led until that late touchdown as Tune heated up amid unseasonably cold temperatures in northwest Louisiana. It was 25 degrees at kickoff, with a wind chill of 12 degrees. Louisiana-Lafayette (6-7) led 13-0 midway through the second quarter and 16-6 at halftime. Tune, who finished 19 of 28 for 216 yards, led Houston on a 13-play, 70-yard drive to open the second half and hit Dell for a 2-yard touchdown that made it 16-13.

Clinging to a three-point lead, Louisiana stuffed Houston on fourth-and-short at the Ragin’ Cajuns 5-yard line midway through the third quarter, but the Cougars eventually tied the game on Kyle Ramsey's 19-yard field early in the fourth. The Ragin' Cajuns wasted a chance to retake the lead when running back Chris Smith fumbled at the Houston 4. Louisiana-Lafayette, located three hours south of Shreveport, took the opening kick and orchestrated a 15-play, 75-yard drive that ended when tight end Johnny Lumpkin made a dazzling touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. The Cajuns got three field goals in the first half from by Kenneth Almendares (42, 42, and 22 yards). Chandler Fields finished 17 of 25 passing for 169 yards and a touchdown. Tune's first TD toss was a 33-yarder to Carter in the second quarter. University of Houston left tackle Patrick Paul, a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection the past two seasons, plans to come back for another season. "I will be a redshirt junior next year, and I am returning," Paul told the Houston Chronicle following Tuesday's practice in Shreveport, La., in advance of the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. Paul's decision to return is important for the offensive line as the Cougars make the move to the Big 12 next season. At 6-7 and 310 pounds, Paul has been the anchor of the offensive line with 26 consecutive starts the past two seasons. "Definitely there's always stuff to improve on," Paul said of the decision to return for a fifth season rather than explore the NFL draft. "I don't even think I've scratched the surface yet."
