In the first step of a multi-phase plan that is hoped will lead to the football team playing its season opener against Clemson as scheduled Sept. 3, Georgia Tech will reopen its athletic facilities for voluntary workouts for all Yellow Jackets athletes in the Atlanta area beginning June 15. Thursday's announcement followed the NCAA's May 20 decision to permit Division I football and basketball players to return to campus for voluntary training as early as June 1, followed by a subsequent ruling to open campuses on the same date for athletes in all sports. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  05/12/20 - Tobias OliverSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 6-1, 204 (DS#103 CB) + More +

Whenever health and college athletics officials deem it appropriate for football to resume, the career of Georgia Tech's Tobias Oliver is in position to take another dramatic turn. Oliver, whose career journey has included stops as heir apparent quarterback for former coach Paul Johnson, possible solution at quarterback for coach Geoff Collins and then wide receiver, could be a keeper at cornerback. Oliver made the switch before spring practice. There are many reasons, not least of which was his performance in Tech's truncated spring practice, that he may have found a spot where he can thrive. "I think his progress was almost ridiculous," cornerback Tre Swilling told the AJC. "It was kind of almost like he'd been playing the position for a year or two before."

In the practices in March, Oliver played the position with seeming ease, dropping back in coverage, breaking on passes and getting his hands on multiple passes. His size (6-foot-2 and 190 pounds) made him a fit, too. "He's a very good athlete," Swilling said. "He's fast, he's strong, he can jump, he's smart. He has all the makeup and intangibles of a top corner. Obviously, he came in and made plays. I think by the time we stopped, he had the most, or was tied for the most, interceptions we had in practice." He also won over another leader of the Yellow Jackets defense, linebacker David Curry. While acknowledging that Oliver has a lot to grasp at cornerback - he played quarterback at Northside-Warner Robins High - Curry appreciated his determination to learn the position and his ability to make plays even as he was only starting out. "(The offense) tried to pick on Tobias, and he held his ground very, very well," Curry said. "As a defense, we were very pumped up for him." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  04/22/20 - Nathan CottrellrSr/2020, Georgia Tech, 5-10, 193 (DS#127 WR) + More +

All Nathan Cottrell could do was laugh. It was a recent phone call with an NFL scout who had watched the former Georgia Tech receiver/running back's special-teams game video. The scout, Cottrell said, told him that his team had rated him as its top special-teams player on its draft board. "I was on the phone and I got that compliment and I started giggling like a little kid," Cottrell told the AJC. "I was like, what? I was like, thank you so much, but on the inside, I was doing backflips. It was wild." In the seven-round NFL draft that runs Thursday through Saturday, chances aren't great that any of the four draft-eligible Yellow Jackets (safety Christian Campbell, tight end Tyler Davis, offensive lineman Jared Southers and Cottrell) will be selected. Likely, Davis has the highest chance. But undrafted free-agent deals seem like a probable outcome. Cottrell, who started a total of four games in his Tech career, would take any foot in the door, and conversations that he said he has had with NFL teams suggest he'll get one. "That's all I can ask for," Cottrell said. "Whatever opportunity I get, I'll be incredibly thankful for and definitely will take full advantage of." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  12/17/19 - Ryan JohnsonrSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 6-6, 314 (DS#70 OG) + More +

Tennessee offensive lineman Ryan Johnson says he's transferring to Georgia Tech. Johnson tweeted Monday that "I'm excited to be a Yellow Jacket and looking forward to a great season." Because he already has graduated, Johnson would be eligible to play for Georgia Tech next season. Johnson announced two weeks ago that he had entered the NCAA transfer portal. After starting all 12 games for Tennessee in 2018, Johnson made only three starts as a junior this season. He did appear in all 12 regular-season games for the Volunteers this year while playing both guard spots. Last year, Johnson started one game at right guard and 11 games at center. He made four starts in 2017 while playing center, left guard and right guard. - AP College Football
