The centerpiece for the new-look Georgia Tech offensive line is Jordan Williams. The highly recruited freshman from Gainesville is 6-foot-6 and weighs 330 pounds. As offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude said, "He's a really large dude." Williams will start at right tackle on Saturday when the Yellow Jackets open the season on Saturday at Florida State. There will be the usual growing pains, but the big-bodied, long-limbed offensive lineman is the template the Yellow Jackets hope to duplicate at the position in the future. Expectations for Williams are high. He was the only offensive lineman from the ACC included on the 247 Sports' Preseason All-America Freshman Team. He is far from a finished product, but his size gives him a huge advantage.

"For a big guy he can really move his feet," Patenaude said. "(Florida State) is going to be a good test. I don't think he's going to be overmatched physically. But over the course of the game, can he sustain and be ready to play 75 plays? He's been really good in camp. Coach (Brent) Key has done a great job with him." Williams' progress has also been helped by the presence of Ryan Johnson, a grad transfer from Tennessee who will start at right guard. Johnson (6-6, 310) played in 36 games and made 19 starts at Tennessee. "Ryan will help him through the game," Patenaude said. "He really understands football and is a great communicator." - Savannah Morning News

  09/12/20 - Djimon BrooksrSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 6-0, 286 (DS#102 DT) + More +

Brooks will be the first Tech player to wear jersey No. 0 after the NCAA's rule change that permits players to wear that number. In July, Collins awarded him the single-digit jersey on the same day that he put him on scholarship, with the jersey number signifying his no-star status as a recruit. After playing one game in his first two seasons, Brooks played in all 12 games last season, starting four. His 27 tackles were second among defensive linemen. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  09/05/20 - Jordan MasonSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 5-11, 223 (DS#49 RB) + More +

A year ago, the Georgia Tech ranked at the bottom of the ACC in total offense. That could change this year with the development of three running backs who might be good enough to expand the team's playbook and offer more options for offensive coordinator Dave Patenaudee. The trio: junior Jordan Mason, the team's leading rusher last season; sophomore Jamious Griffin, the prize of the 2018 signing class; and freshman Jahmyr Gibbs, the prize recruit from 2019. Mason will likely start, but the other two will get plenty of opportunities. "That group is really good," Patenaude said. "I don't see everybody, but I'm not trading anybody for our top three guys."

Mason (6-foot-1, 218 pounds) has come a long way since his redshirt freshman season, when the media guide erroneously listed his name as Jordan Ponchez-Mason. Turns out Ponchez is his middle name and not part of a hyphenated surname. Regardless of that typo, which both amused and confused Mason, he rushed for 659 yards and suffered only one negative run. Mason started 12 games last season as a sophomore and rushed for 899 yards and seven touchdowns. That included a career-high effort of 141 yards against both Miami and N.C. State. He was named third-team All-ACC. "He has a great feel for what we're doing," Patenaude said. "He runs downhill, he's gotten better and he's in great shape. Last year he was able to make people miss; he had one of the highest miss-rates in the country. He's real good at that." - Macon Telegraph

Georgia wide receiver Dominick Blaylock will miss the 2020 season following his second serious knee injury in two years. Blaylock, a part-time starter in 2019, was one of the team's top returning receivers and return specialists. Georgia announced on Thursday that Blaylock, a sophomore, hurt his left knee Wednesday in a noncontact drill. Georgia was No. 4 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll released on Monday. Blaylock will need surgery and is expected to make a full recovery for the 2021 season. He also suffered a serious knee injury in last season's Southeastern Conference championship game loss to LSU. Blaylock had 18 catches for 310 yards and five touchdowns last season. He had a team-leading 14 punt returns for 128 yards. - AP College Football

  08/26/20 - Tobias OliverSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 6-1, 204 (DS#103 CB) + More +

The difference between playing on offense and defense, as Tobias Oliver explained it, sounds a little bit like the difference between throwing a party and attending one. It's a dichotomy that the junior from Warner Robins has gleaned in the past several months in his transition from first playing quarterback and then wide receiver in the past two seasons before switching to cornerback in spring practice. "Offensively, it's much more schematic than defense," Oliver said. "Like, defense, you can still do all the rah-rah and still make plays. Offense, you've got to be a lot more focused, you've got to read a lot more keys."

Oliver added that there are still keys to read and techniques to play on defense, "but you're just playing football at the end of the day," he said. Not every defensive player, particularly those who are playing defense for the first time in several years, can play as freely as Oliver evidently has. It bodes well for defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker's unit. If one of the more athletic, hardworking and determined players on the roster can make a smooth transition and contribute, the progress that's expected out of the defense this year could be even more pronounced. "I love T.O.," safeties coach Nate Burton said. "He's got a great desire to learn, to be better. He wants to get better every day, studying film, asking questions. He uses every resource here imaginable to become the best version of himself, the best corner that he can be for us here at Georgia Tech." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  08/06/20 - Devin CochranrSr/2022, Georgia Tech, 6-7, 306 (DS#31 OT) + More +

Georgia Tech had been counting on the arrival of Vanderbilt offensive tackle Devin Cochran as a grad transfer, but he will not be enrolling at Tech, coach Geoff Collins said Wednesday after the team's first practice of preseason camp. Cochran, a Greater Atlanta Christian School graduate, was expected to plug in at one of the tackle spots and provide solid play for the Yellow Jackets' offense. Cochran, listed at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, started 32 games in three seasons at Vanderbilt, playing at both right and left tackle. Collins did not give a reason for Cochran's decision, giving Cochran the space to make any explanation on his own terms. Cochran has been finishing up his degree at Vanderbilt this summer. It isn't unusual for an athlete planning to leave his original school as a grad transfer to finish coursework in the summer and transfer at that point. In an interview with the AJC in May, Cochran seemed eager to play for Tech and learn from offensive-line coach Brent Key. - Atlanta Journal Constitution
