  2021 BUTKUS AWARD WINNER: The 37th annual collegiate Butkus Award honoring the nation's best collegiate linebacker was presented today to University of Georgia inside linebacker Nakobe Dean. The award was presented by football legend Dick Butkus and his son Matt in a surprise announcement during a team meeting today. Dean received 34 percent of the weighted vote and 52 percent of first-place votes in becoming the second Bulldog to win the prestigious trophy, which honors top linebackers at three levels. Dean also won the 2018 high school Butkus Award. The 6-0, 225 lb. junior mechanical engineering major from Horn Lake, Miss., started all 12 regular season games in 2021 for the Bulldogs, which surrendered an average of just 6.9 points per game. His regular-season performance included 56 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and two interceptions, including one for touchdown. He has played in 37 games during his Georgia career.

The selection committee stated: "Nakobe Dean is a playmaker with a special combination of strength, coverage ability, playmaking flair and leadership skill. He consistently makes his presence felt on the field and in the community, elevates the defense with his command and is a complete linebacker who has made a tremendous impact on Georgia's program." Finishing second was Devin Lloyd of Utah with 30 percent of the weighted vote. Others receiving votes; Leo Chenal of Wisconsin (15%), Damone Clark of LSU (7%), Darrian Beavers of Cincinnati (7%), Chad Muma of Wyoming (7%), and DeMarvion Overshown of Texas with a write-in vote. - Butkus Award

  Georgia has allowed just 83 points entering the Southeastern Conference championship game against Alabama. Since 2000, the only other team to give up under 100 points over its first 12 games was Southern California (93) in 2008. The Bulldogs are the first team since Texas in 1979 to hold its opponents to 17 points or less in each of its first 12 games of the season, according to ESPN. - AP College Football

  Stetson Bennett passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns, including two to tight end Brock Bowers, and No. 1 Georgia finished its undefeated regular season by overwhelming Georgia Tech 45-0 on Saturday. Georgia (12-0) gained momentum for next week's much-anticipated Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 3 Alabama in Atlanta. It is the first undefeated regular season for the Bulldogs since 1982, when they capped a streak of three consecutive SEC championships with tailback Herschel Walker. The renewal of the battle for state bragging rights was a mismatch.

Georgia, which began the day leading the nation with its averages of 7.5 points and 236 yards allowed, posted its third shutout while giving up only 171 yards. Bowers had a 77-yard touchdown catch, and Kenny McIntosh added a 59-yard scoring run. Bowers, a freshman, also scored on a 9-yard catch. He has 10 touchdown receptions, a school record for tight ends. Georgia Tech (3-9) finished with three wins for the third consecutive season under coach Geoff Collins, who acknowledged this week he will need to show improvement next year.   As the leader of the nation's top defense, Jordan Davis has produced enough highlights to receive some Heisman Trophy hype. Davis made another memory in his farewell to Sanford Stadium. The standout defensive tackle scored his first career touchdown and No. 1 Georgia was again dominant in a 56-7 rout of Charleston Southern on Saturday. Davis began the day among the seniors honored in a pregame ceremony. He ended it directing the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band. He was presented a red uniform jacket as an honorary member of the band. "If today was not my favorite memory, I don't know what to tell you," Davis said. Georgia (11-0) was in full control against Charleston Southern (4-6), the Football Championship Subdivision team from the Big South. The Buccaneers fell to 0-25 all-time against FBS teams. The Bulldogs allowed only 126 yards — 68 rushing on 31 carries and 58 passing. "Man, tough when you are playing the No. 1 team in the country," said Charleston Southern coach Autrey Denson. "There is no room for error, so we had to play a perfect game, our best game of the season. Unfortunately, we did not do that in all phases, but man did they compete their tails off." The Bulldogs installed a goal-line play for Davis in practice this week but there was no guarantee they would use it.

As it turned out, Davis didn't have to wait very long as he scored on a 1-yard plunge out of the Bulldogs' jumbo package for the game's first touchdown. It's not often that quarterback Stetson Bennett has the opportunity to hand the ball to a 6-foot-6, 340-pound running back. "That was my whole job on the play, make sure he gets the ball and gets the right handoff," Bennett said. "Make sure he gets in the end zone. It was pretty cool." Davis had previously played in the jumbo package as a blocker, but fans roared in anticipation when the massive lineman shifted to the backfield. Davis was stopped on his first run from the 2.   Georgia outside linebacker Adam Anderson was released from the Athens-Clarke County jail on $25,000 bond Wednesday, one week after being charged with rape. Anderson's attorney, Steve Sadow, told The Associated Press Athens-Clarke County Superior Court judge Eric Norris "decided that bond was appropriate and that puts us in position to prove (Anderson's) innocence." Sadow said in a statement last week "Adam is innocent of the charge brought against him and intends to vigorously defend himself in court." During Wednesday's hearing, a second woman said she was the victim of an alleged 2020 incident involving Anderson in neighboring Oconee County. Anderson remains under indefinite suspension by Georgia. He has missed No. 1 Georgia's last two games and will not play in Saturday's game against Charleston Southern. - AP College Football

  Georgia, Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State held their places in the College Football Playoff ranking Tuesday, with Cincinnati still sitting at fifth. There was no movement in the selection committee's top seven after all those teams won last week. Michigan was still No. 6 and Michigan State seventh, heading into the Spartans' big game Saturday at Ohio State. Notre Dame moved up a spot to eighth. Oklahoma State (9-1) is now the highest-ranked Big 12 team at ninth after Oklahoma was handed its first loss last week. Wake Forest (9-1) is No. 10, the highest-ranked team from the Atlantic Coast Conference with three rankings left until selection Sunday. In the seven-year history of the College Football Playoff, no team has come from farther back than ninth to reach the final four with two rankings remaining before selection Sunday.
