Alex Hornibrook did more than just fill in as Florida State's starter. He had a career night and gave the Seminoles a much-needed victory. Hornibrook, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, made his first start at Florida State and threw for a career-high 316 yards, tossing three touchdown passes in the Seminoles' 31-13 win over North Carolina State on Saturday night. "I was just proud of the way the team finished today," Hornibrook said. "And we were able to separate a little bit and not be a one-possession game at the end." Hornibrook was often pressured and was sacked eight times. But he completed 29 of 40 passes and had two touchdown passes to Tamorrion Terry and another to Ontaria Wilson for Florida State (3-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). He improves to 27-6 as a starter.

James Blackman suffered a knee injury in last week's win over Louisville and "tweaked" it again on Friday in practice, coach Willie Taggart said. "We wanted to see how he'd go through warmups and everything, see how it felt," Taggart said. "Thought it would be best that we didn't put him in there." Hornibrook helped the Seminoles' offense put together plenty of scoring drives, helping them build a 17-6 halftime lead that they would not relinquish. Florida State had let fourth-quarter leads slip away against Boise State and Virginia but have now finished off Louisville and NC State (3-2, 0-1) on consecutive weeks. The Seminoles won back-to-back ACC games for the first time since Nov. 2016. - Florida State/AP College Football

  09/24/19 - *Cam AkersJr/2020, Florida State, 5-10, 217 (DS#5 RB) + More +

Cam Akers is flashing his freshman form again as a junior. Last year, running behind one of the worst offensive lines in the Power Five, Akers rarely was able to get free. Getting a little more help this year, Akers is again a weapon for the Seminoles. He has 17 runs of at least 10 yards through four games compared to 16 all last season. He's coming off a grinding 112 yards and three touchdowns in a victory against Louisville. Florida State will need another big day from Akers to make it two straight victories. North Carolina State visits Saturday with one of the best run defenses in the ACC. - AP College Football

  09/21/19 - *Cam AkersJr/2020, Florida State, 5-10, 217 (DS#5 RB) + More +

Florida State let fourth-quarter leads slip away against Boise State and Virginia. Even Louisiana-Monroe tied up the game before Florida State won that game in overtime. The Seminoles weren't about to let this opportunity slip away again. Cam Akers scored three touchdowns and Alex Hornibrook came off the bench and threw a 60-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as Florida State defeated Louisville 35-24 on Saturday. Akers ran 29 times for 112 yards for Florida State (2-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which had a season-high 522 offensive yards. His final score, a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:37 to go, secured a win after the Seminoles let late leads slip away in losses to Boise State and Virginia. "We had some music on, some coaches were dancing," Hornibrook said. "Some people that shouldn't have been dancing were dancing. It was awesome. That's what you play football for - those feelings like that."

The Seminoles had good feelings early but nearly let another opportunity to win slip away after squandering a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. But they finished off a win, and did it even after losing quarterback James Blackman to a knee injury in the third quarter. Florida State coach Willie Taggart said Blackman will undergo further tests on Sunday. Hornibrook was expected to make his Florida State debut and was inserted into the game in the first quarter, tossing a 44-yard touchdown pass to Keyshawn Helton on his first throw for the Seminoles. When Blackman was lost to injury on Florida State's first drive of the second half, the Wisconsin graduate transfer then took over. - Florida State/AP College Football

Florida State coach Willie Taggart says junior defensive end/outside linebacker Joshua Kaindoh will miss the rest of the season with a lower-leg injury. Kaindoh had nine tackles and one sack in three games this season. He was carted off the field during Saturday's 31-24 loss at Virginia. The injury means that junior Janarius Robinson will likely start for the Seminoles (1-2, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) when they play host to Louisville (2-1, 0-0) on Saturday. Robinson has eight tackles and a fumble recovery in three games this year. Florida State is still developing depth at the defensive end/linebacker spot, so it's unclear who will back up Robinson. Among the veteran options are seniors Adonis Thomas and Josh Brown. Taggart also said Monday that left tackle Jauan Williams (ankle) remains week to week. Williams missed Saturday's game at Virginia. - AP College Football
