Field goals are coming in bunches for Colorado State's Cayden Camper. He kicked a school-record six in a 32-14 win over San Jose State, the most in an Bowl Subdivision game since Memphis' Riley Patterson kicked six against Penn State in the 2019 Cotton Bowl. Camper had shared the national season high after he kicked five field goals in a 22-6 win at Toledo on Sept. 18. He has made 11 straight after missing three of his first four attempts this season. Camper walked on as a freshman and made 7 of 13 field goals while splitting duty with Robert Liss. Liss handled the kicking in 2020 and entered the transfer portal in August, leaving Camper to handle all the extra-point and field-goal kicking this season. - AP College Football

Cayden Camper kicked six field goals - three in each half - and Colorado State opened Mountain West Conference play with a 32-14 victory over San Jose State on Saturday. Colorado State (2-3, 1-0) grabbed the lead on their opening drive when Jaylen Thomas scored on a 1-yard run to cap an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Camper made it 10-0 with 28 seconds left in the first quarter on a 28-yard field goal. Camper sandwiched short field goals around a Spartans' TD - Nick Nash connected with Derrick Deese Jr. for the 18-yard score - and the Rams led 16-7 at halftime.

Todd Centeio hooked up with Ty McCullouch for a 60-yard scoring strike on the Rams' first possession of the third quarter to push their lead to 23-7. Camper kicked a 53-yard field goal to make it 26-7 and connected from 38 and 24 yards out in the final quarter to cap the scoring. Centeio completed 19 of 23 passes for 232 yards for Colorado State. A'Jon Vivens rushed for 114 yards on 31 carries. Nash was 11-of-22 passing for 154 yards and two TDs with one interception for San Jose State (3-3, 1-1). The Spartans managed just 267 yards of offense, while yielding 449. - Colorado State/AP College Football

  08/09/21 - Trey McBrideSr/2022, Colorado State, 6-3, 245 (DS#1 TE) + More +

Colorado State football coach Steve Addazio did not hesitate to answer a bold question. Is senior Trey McBride the best college tight end in the country? "Yes," Addazio said. "I don't say that flippantly. Because he can do it all." CSU opened its fall camp Thursday with heightened expectations for Addazio's first real season after COVID-19 cancellations left the Rams with only four games last year. Few players on the roster command so much attention as McBride - the versatile 6-foot-4, 260-pound tight end who returns to Fort Collins for a fourth season. "When you talk about a complete tight end for the next level, that can get open and catch the ball, that can block people, is physically tough and (football) is their world...that's the best tight end in the country right there," Addazio said.

McBride - a Fort Morgan native with a brother, Toby, on the roster - embraces Addazio's sky-high expectations. "There are a lot of great tight ends out there. I've still got a lot of things to prove," McBride said. "But I think I can definitely be one of the top tight ends in the country this year. That's kind of my goal. There are a lot of things that have to fall into place. I'm excited to play this season and see how it goes." McBride established himself among the nation's elite in a breakout sophomore year with 45 catches for 560 yards and four touchdowns. His high production rate continued a season ago with 15 yards per reception. - Denver Post

With just four games to work with in 2020, it's hard to say how dominant the Rams' defensive line could be in a full season. CSU's defensive front was really good in those four games, leading the nation in average number of tackles for lost yardage per game (10.5) and finishing fourth in sacks (4.0 a game) and 12th in rushing defense (108.5 a game). And they did that despite constant questions among players about whether a particular game was going to be played and who would or would not be available because of COVID-19 test results and quarantines. "I think it'll be a much better season this year just because of that alone, being able to actually practice every day and not having to worry about that so much," senior defensive end Scott Patchan said Thursday.

With Patchan and the other three starters - Manny Jones, Toby McBride and Devin Phillips - returning this season, along with top reserve Ellison Hubbard and the addition of Boston College transfer Mike Ciaffoni, the Rams enter fall camp with a defensive line that position coach Antoine Smith believes will be among the best in the nation. That might be a bit optimistic, but CSU's defensive front should be among the best in the Mountain West. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Stephon Wright has entered the transfer portal. The 6-foot-4, 287-pounder will have four years of eligibility at his new school. Wright, a product of Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, has not seen much playing time due to injuries. Last season he served a a backup to junior Jermayne Lole at 3-technique tackle. He played in two games in the shortened season but did not record a tackle. He had shoulder surgery during the offseason that prevented him from going through spring drills in March. Wright was one of ASU's most prized recruits in 2019. He boasted a four-star ranking and had been pegged the No. 18 strong side defensive end and No. 255 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite ranking. - Arizona Republic

Colorado State defensive end Scott Patchan and punter Ryan Stonehouse were named to the preseason All-Mountain West football team, the conference announced Thursday at its annual media days at the Cosmopolitan. Both players were first-team selections to the all-conference team following the 2020 season, as were each of the other 22 selections on offense and defense as well as two of the four specialists. Patchan was one of the top pass-rushers in the country during the Rams' COVID-19-abbreviated season with 5.5 sacks in four games - an average of 1.38 per game. It was his first year at CSU after joining the program as a graduate transfer from Miami. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

Colorado State's football team was picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West's Mountain Division in a preseason media poll announced Wednesday at the start of the league's media days at the Cosmopolitan. The Rams, who went 1-3 in an abbreviated 2020 season after losing three games to COVID-19 issues and another because of a player boycott by the opposing team, were picked to finish behind perennial power Boise State, Wyoming and Air Force and ahead of Utah State and New Mexico in the six-team Mountain Division.

CSU was also picked to finish fourth in the Mountain Division in most preseason publications, including Athlon, Lindy's and Phil Steele. Steve Addazio, the only head coach not in attendance at the annual media days event, is beginning his second season with the Rams. He was scheduled to address reporters remotely later Wednesday and was not immediately available for comment. Boise State is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Mountain Division champion, receiving 23 of a possible 25 first-place votes from media who cover the league. Wyoming received the other two first-place votes. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

Warren Jackson wasn't selected in the 2021 NFL draft, but has signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos. Jackson was in contact with a number of teams following the draft and chose a return to Colorado to start his career as an undrafted free agent. The 6-foot-6, 219-pound Jackson is known for his extensive catch radius and ability to box-out defenders in the red zone. One of the main scouting concerns about Jackson was his speed.

Jackson opted out of the 2020 season when the Mountain West and several other college football conferences announced in August they would not have fall seasons. He made a big impression right off the bat at CSU, catching two touchdown passes as a true freshman in a 2017 loss at Alabama. In his three seasons, he caught 124 passes for 1,789 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was named to the All-Mountain West first team in 2019 as a junior and was the preseason pick as the league's 2020 Offensive Player of the Year. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

Colorado State cornerback Keevan Bailey, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Champ Bailey, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, he said Wednesday on Twitter. "In consideration of evolving my growth, I feel it's best that I enter the transfer portal," Keevan Bailey wrote, while thanking CSU and the football staff for the opportunity to play college football and "developing me into a better athlete." Keevan Bailey, a 5-foot-11, 180-pounder from Conyers, Georgia, played in eight games at CSU in 2019, recording 12 tackles, one interception and five pass breakups. He played in two of the Rams' four games in 2020 and did not make any tackles or break up any passes. Keevan Bailey has three years of eligibility remaining. Champ Bailey played 15 seasons in the NFL, 10 with the Denver Broncos, and made the Pro Bowl 12 times.   Ayden Hector's career with the Washington State football team appears to be over after just three games. Hector, who started at strong safety in two games for the Cougars after walking on to the team in October, and won Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after contributing to three turnovers in a loss to Oregon, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, he announced Tuesday on social media. The Seattle native and former Stanford signee had been serving an indefinite suspension from football activities after being arrested in February for a fraudulent ID and being a minor in possession. It's unclear if that suspension would've carried into spring workouts. Hector was a four-star prospect coming out of high school powerhouse Eastside Catholic in Burien, Washington. - Spokesman-Review
