  07/23/22 - Taurean Carter IIrSr/2026, Colorado, 6-3, 280 (DS#999 DT) + More +

University of Arkansas defensive tackle Taurean Carter suffered a knee injury that required surgery during the team's spring showcase on April 16, but Coach Sam Pittman isn't counting him out on playing this season, "Taurean's so strong, and guys that have muscles around injuries tend to heal a little faster," Pittman said. "He's so strong, and he has a strong will to not be the norm. I think he's progressing really well. I want him to [be back] more for him than I do for the team even. "But he's been very engaged, and he's progressing rapidly. We'll just kind of have to wait and see to be perfectly honest with you."

Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon, a teammate of Carter's at Mansfield (Texas) Legacy High, said Carter's handling his injury situation well. "I think when it first hit him he was definitely down," Catalon said. "I went through the process. The first couple of weeks it's tough and it's continuing to be tough. I know him. I've known him my whole life and he's a strong-minded guy. When he puts his mind to something he's going to do it. "He's attacked the process really well. He's asked me questions about it. The athletic staff at Arkansas is doing a great job with him, making sure he's good and progressing well. I can't wait to see his comeback." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  07/22/22 - Terrance LangrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-4, 282 (DS#48 DE) + More +

As Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell walked around the practice field in the spring, there was a noticeable difference without Carson Wells on the edge of the defense. CU's most dominant edge rusher over the past two seasons, Wells is now trying to make the roster with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. Dorrell liked what he saw on the edge, however. "A lot of guys that are taking advantage of their reps right now," he said. "They're doing pretty well. We've got guys that are really starting to respond and develop." This summer, BuffZone.com will preview each position group for CU and in this installment, we look at the defensive ends and outside linebackers. On the edge, the Buffs are looking to not only replace Wells (15.5 sacks, 38 tackles for loss in his career), but get even better.

Even with Wells, CU ranked 126th nationally in producing just 1.08 sacks per game in 2021 (13 sacks in 12 games). The Buffs were 107th in tackles for loss (59, 4.92 per game). This season, as CU shifts from a 3-4 to more of a 4-3 base defense, the Buffs will lean on several players to step up. Senior defensive end Terrance Lang, senior outside linebacker Guy Thomas and several others will be called upon to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. "Negative plays, sacks, TFLs," Lang said of what he wants out of himself - and the rest of the group. "I mean, tackles are cool, but I want to make game-changing plays this year. Plays that are really going to change the game and give us an edge. "There was a lot of plays I left on the field." - Daily Camera

Colorado hasn't played a football game at Air Force in nearly 48 years. The Buffaloes haven't had a game on CBS in more than 26 years. Both of those streaks will come to a close on Sept. 10. On Wednesday, the game time and TV slot for the Buffs' visit to Falcon Stadium was announced. The game is slated for a 1:30 p.m. MDT kickoff and will be broadcast on CBS. This will be CU's first appearance on CBS since beating Oregon, 38-6, in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1996. CU's last visit to Air Force came on Oct. 5, 1974, when the Buffs came away with a 28-27 victory. After that game, the Buffs and Falcons didn't meet again until Sept. 14, 2019, at Folsom Field. Air Force won that game, 30-23, in overtime. Dating back to the first meeting in 1958, CU holds a 12-5 lead in the series with Air Force, including 5-1 in Colorado Springs. - Daily Camera

  05/21/22 - Travis HunterJr/2025, Colorado, 6-0, 188 (DS#1 CB) + More +

During a Wednesday night event in Birmingham, Saban claimed Jackson State "paid a guy a million dollars last year that was a really good Division I player to come to school," and that, "it was in the paper and they bragged about it. Nobody did anything about it." Saban was assumed to be referring to 247 Sports' top-rated prospect in the 2022 class, five-star cornerback Travis Hunter, who shocked the college football world when he flipped his commitment from Florida State to Jackson State last December. Hunter in a tweet Thursday questioned how he was paid a million dollars if his mother remains in a three-bedroom house with five children.

Sanders, the former NFL star, followed up by tweeting that he does not even make a million dollars as Jackson State's coach. "I don't make a million. Travis ain't built like that. Travis ain't chasing a dollar. Travis is chasing greatness. Travis and his family don't get down like that," Sanders said. "They never came to us in search of the bag. They're not built like that. This kid wants to be great. "He wants my hands on him. He wants me to mold him. He wants me to be his navigational system through life. He wants to be that dude." Andscape reported, citing a source, that Hunter has two current NIL deals and two pending, and that the deals are worth less than $250,000. - Birmingham News

  05/13/22 - Robert BarnesrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-3, 221 (DS#68 ILB) + More +

When he got to Colorado a year ago, Robert Barnes was eager to play alongside star linebacker Nate Landman and learn from the leader of the Buffaloes' defense. Now that Landman has graduated, Barnes is eager to take on a bigger role and lead the Buffs from the middle of the defense. "Nate did a great job of implementing what a Colorado linebacker was, especially for me not knowing anything about the tradition or the culture," said Barnes, a transfer from Oklahoma in January of 2021. "Just by being with him in that room for a year and being able to build off his leadership and knowing where we want to set the standard for this room in the future, I think helped a lot." A 6-foot-2, 230-pound inside linebacker, Barnes is a sixth-year senior who is preparing for his second season at CU.

In four years at Oklahoma, he played safety and linebacker. He was a starter for 10 of the 34 games he played with the Sooners, compiling 78 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two interceptions. Last season with the Buffs, he played in 11 games, with three starts late in the year after Landman went down with a shoulder injury. Barnes finished with 44 tackles, three tackles for loss and an interception. - Daily Camera

  05/12/22 - Drew CarterJr/2025, Colorado, 6-3, 195 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Throughout the spring, incumbent starter Brendon Lewis took the first-team reps at quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes. Junior JT Shrout, although limited as he recovered from a knee injury, was in the spotlight as the main competitor for the starting job. Meanwhile, Drew Carter continues his own work as he strives to get on the field. "I just try to control what I can control and get better each and every day," the true sophomore said. "I try to focus on two things to get better on (every day). I don't really see it as a competition. I mean, I'm definitely competing against them but my biggest competition is myself."

With Shrout injured, Carter went through last season as the No. 2 quarterback for the Buffs. He played in six games, but despite the offense struggling all season, he took only 31 snaps. Carter threw 12 passes - 8 of those in a Week 3 game against Minnesota - and either handed the ball off or took a knee 16 times. Overall, he was 5-for-12 for 35 yards. "A little bit (frustrating)," he said of last season. "I mean, it would be frustrating for anyone, but I just tried to control what I control." Carter threw for 6,955 yards and 54 touchdowns during his three-year career at Tigard (Ore.) High School, but didn't get a senior year in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He then graduated early and enrolled at CU in January of 2021. - Daily Camera

  05/11/22 - Brady RussellrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-3, 247 (DS#25 TE) + More +

With one more season to play, Russell has already left his own indelible mark on CU. Named the Buffs' offensive scout team player of the year in 2017, he earned a scholarship during fall camp in 2018. By the end of that season, he was a starter. He enters this season with 38 games and 28 starts under his belt and he's developed into one of the better tight ends in the Pac-12. Last season, he led the Buffs in receptions (25) and receiving yards (307). Russell has spent the offseason trying to be even better, though. "It's been really, really good," he said of the offseason. "I kind of got to grow a lot more in my pass game and understanding the different things I can do. That's probably where I've seen the most growth."

In spring, Russell said he focused on "hand placement in my blocking and also having more vertical footwork instead of horizontal. I've definitely improved a lot in both categories. Coach (Clay) Patterson has helped tremendously." Clay Patterson was hired as CU's tight ends coach in January and there may not be a better coach/player fit than Patterson and Russell. "It's kind of like having another me in the room," said Russell, who shares a love of country music with his new position coach. "We're very similar - the way we think, the way we talk; our vernacular even in the meeting room." - Daily Camera

  05/09/22 - Taurean Carter IIrSr/2026, Colorado, 6-3, 280 (DS#999 DT) + More +

University of Arkansas defensive tackle Taurean Carter underwent knee surgery on Friday, sources with knowledge of the situation said Friday. The magnitude of the injury and how long it will keep Carter sidelined have not been disclosed by Coach Sam Pittman. Carter went to the turf in pain during a "thud" contact segment of the team's spring showcase event inside the Walker Pavilion on April 16. He was aided off the field by team by medical personnel and has been under observation since then. Pittman said at the time, "I don't think it's an ACL or anything of that nature, but there is something there that we have to tend to." The injury to Carter comes at what stacks up as the thinnest position on the team, the interior defensive line. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  05/07/22 - Alvin WilliamsJr/2025, Colorado, 6-2, 230 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

During an open scrimmage on April 9 at Folsom Field, it was tough to miss No. 58 coming around the edge and making plays in the backfield. "Just doing my job," Colorado sophomore outside linebacker Alvin Williams said. "It's always fun to do your job, return to that childhood game you played back in the backyard. Coming off the ball and getting that sack, you get super excited. Me wearing the 58 in Colorado, I feel like Von Miller every time I get a sack."

While Miller is no longer starring for the Denver Broncos - he's now gearing up for his first season with the Buffalo Bills - Williams is continuing his pursuit of being like the future Hall of Famer. "That's where I get most of my moves from, either Von Miller or Khalil Mack," Williams said. "I've been watching Chandler Jones lately, too, just working on the ghost moves and just seeing how guys in league (work)." Last season, only three teams in the country had fewer sacks than the Buffs (13, 1.08 per game) and they were 107th nationally in tackles for loss (59, 4.92 per game). Then, they lost their best edge rusher, Carson Wells, to graduation. This year, the Buffs are banking on several players, including Williams, taking their game to a new level so they can improve on the edge. - Daily Camera

One of the best inside linebackers in the Big 12 is coming to the Pac-12. On Saturday, Josh Chandler-Semedo announced that he is transferring to Colorado for his final year of college football after playing the previous four seasons at West Virginia. Chandler-Semedo played in 44 games at West Virginia, with 31 starts and he was the Mountaineers' active leader in career tackles with 260. Last season, he was a 13-game starter at middle linebacker, finishing with 110 tackles, including 68 solo stops. He also had 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and three pass breakups. He was voted All-Big 12 honorable mention by coaches and was third-team All-Big 12 by Phil Steele. Chandler-Semedo was named WVU's defensive MVP at the Liberty Bowl in 2020 after recording 13 tackles and his first career interception. - Daily Camera

  05/02/22 - R.J. Sneed IIrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-1, 194 (DS#245 WR) + More +

RJ Sneed hasn't been in Boulder very long, but it hasn't taken much time for Colorado quarterback Brendon Lewis to develop a good rapport with his newest weapon. During the spring showcase on Saturday at Folsom Field, Lewis connected with Sneed four times for 29 yards. Two of those receptions went for first downs, including a 14-yarder on a second-and-12 play. "Oh yeah, it's really fun throwing to RJ, watching RJ catch the ball," Lewis said. "As soon as he got here, we had a connection. I don't know why. Maybe because we're both from Texas, but it's really fun playing with RJ. He knows a lot about the game and stuff, so I like throwing him the ball." During an open scrimmage on April 9, Sneed played sparingly, but Lewis found him for a 19-yard reception on a third-and-9 play. CU lost five receivers to the transfer portal after last season, including starters Brenden Rice and Dimitri Stanley. The addition of Sneed is expected to be a boost for the offense. A graduate transfer, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Sneed caught 133 passes for 1,564 yards and eight touchdowns at Baylor. He led the Bears in receiving in 2020. - Daily Camera
