Dynamic Colorado wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. will skip his final season and declare for the NFL draft. Shenault is a top prospect after a career with the Buffaloes that included plenty of big catches while facing plenty of double coverage. He also was hampered by injuries as he finished with 149 catches for 1,943 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had 280 yards rushing and seven scores. Over the last two seasons, the Buffaloes took advantage of Shenault's power and speed by lining him up at different spots. He played outside receiver, in the slot, h-back, tailback, some tight end and even ran the wildcat position. He posted big numbers in 2018 when he had 86 receptions for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns. He missed three games that season with an injury.

"Laviska Shenault represented our relentless culture and was one of the most dynamic, dominant and versatile players that I have ever coached," Buffaloes coach Mel Tucker said. "He embodies the true `show me, don't tell me' competitive spirit. I look forward to watching him develop and compete at the elite level and thank him for his contributions on and off the field." The standout receiver from Texas becomes the 10th Colorado player to declare early for the draft. The last one was cornerback Isaiah Oliver, who was a second-round pick by Atlanta in 2018. Shenault will soon start training for the NFL combine. The NFL draft will be held April 23-25. - AP College Football

Laviska Shenault Jr., one of the most dynamic players ever to play at the University of Colorado, is forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL draft. Shenault announced the decision on his Twitter page. "Laviska Shenault represented our relentless culture and was one of the most dynamic, dominant and versatile players that I have ever coached," said CU coach Mel Tucker. "I look forward to watching him develop and compete at the elite level and thank him for his contributions on and off the field. Once a Buff, always a Buff."

"Special thanks to the fans. You guys gave me strength, you guys pushed me when it was tough. I appreciate you all so much. You made me feel comfortable and confident more than I can express," Shenault stated on social media. Shenault battled through injuries during the 2019 season, but still finished with 56 catches for 764 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 161 yards. - CBS4 TV Denver

Those bowl thoughts by the Colorado Buffaloes are still distant. At least they're still flickering. For that, they can thank a banged-up Laviska Shenault Jr. picking up a late fourth down with a powerful surge, a maligned defense digging in and of course a fill-in freshman kicker coming up clutch with the biggest boot of his life. Evan Price made a 37-yard field goal with no time remaining as Colorado beat Stanford 16-13 on Saturday to snap a five-game skid. "Finally," Shenault said. "Finally, we got this one. Shout-out to our kicker -- freshman, too." Price was promoted this week with James Stefanou dealing with a hip injury. Price was instantly mobbed by teammates, briefly falling to the ground and losing his helmet. It was Colorado's first game-winning field goal as time expired since Sept. 29, 2007, against Oklahoma.

Shenault and the offense did the rest for the Buffaloes (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12), who need to win their final two games to become bowl eligible. Quarterback Steven Montez methodically drove the Buffaloes down the field to set up the winning score. The drive was aided by a pass interference call on Stanford's Kyu Blu Kelly, who reached out to slow down Tony Brown on a deep pass. Colorado also went for it on fourth-and-short at the Stanford 34, with Shenault Jr. taking a handoff and churning for the yardage -- banged up knee and all. "I live for moments like this," Shenault said. Shenault briefly went to the Colorado locker room late in the second quarter with a knee injury only to return for the second half. He had eight catches for 91 yards. - Colorado/AP College Football

Colorado's Laviska Shenault was held to three receptions for 18 yards, a week after he had nine catches for 172 yards against USC. "It's a group effort when you have something like that. We had to be conscious of where he was at all times," Kelly said. "We did a lot of in-and-out on him and top-down coverage on him. I thought that Darnay (Holmes) did a nice job when he was iso'd on him one-on-one. But also, when you can get to the quarterback and force the ball out a little bit quicker, that helps." - AP College Football

  10/25/19 - Steven MontezrSr/2020, Colorado, 6-4, 231 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Steven Montez, who had zero TDs and six interceptions in his last two games, threw three TD passes, including a 71-yarder to Laviska Shenault Jr. on the second play of the second half. But he wasn't the same after taking a hard hit from safety Hunter Echols late in the third quarter. "He seemed fine," Tucker said. "If he wasn't, he wouldn't have been back in there." Montez said as soon as he passed concussion protocol, "I was just like I've got to get back out there. This is crunch time, I can't be sitting in the training room."

Montez's backup, Blake Stenstrom came in with 4 seconds left in the third quarter and gained 27 yards on a keeper but was replaced by Montez to start the fourth quarter. Montez completed just 4 of 11 passes for 40 yards after that, and one of those was a 3-yarder to Alex Fontenot on fourth-and-4 with 90 seconds left. "I think we did some positive things, some things we can definitely build on in the future," Montez said. "But we just got to do a little bit more." - AP College Football

  09/22/19 - Steven MontezrSr/2020, Colorado, 6-4, 231 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Steven Montez threw for 337 yards and had three touchdown passes to Tony Brown, lifting Colorado to a 34-31 win over No. 24 Arizona State on Saturday night. Arizona State (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) won its first three games behind its defense, allowing 21 combined points. Colorado (3-1, 1-0) had 24 points by halftime and racked up 477 total yards against the Sun Devils, despite playing most of the game without star receiver Laviska Shenault due to injury. Brown, who had three career touchdowns entering Saturday's game, picked up the slack with nine catches for 150 yards. Arizona State's Jayden Daniels threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Brandon Aiyuk nine times for 122 yards to keep the Sun Devils within reach.

Montez put Colorado up 31-24 in the third quarter with a 20-yard TD pass to Brown. Daniels answered with a 39-yard TD pass to Frank Darby to tie the game for the fourth time. James Stefanou gave Colorado the lead back with a 44-yard field goal with 2:03 left and Colorado forced the Sun Devils to turn the ball over on downs. A year ago, Arizona State moved into the AP Top 25 with the marquee win of coach Herm Edwards' first season, knocking off Michigan State. The Sun Devils fell flat after that, losing their next two games on the way to a 7-6 season. - Colorado/AP College Football

  08/30/19 - Alex FontenotrSr/2023, Colorado, 5-11, 200 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Mel Tucker's debut as Colorado coach was a success in part because his defense created four turnovers. The real takeaway was this: The Buffaloes still have a ways to go. "Winning is good," Tucker said. "We've got a ways to go before I can say that's the type of football team that we want to have." Tailback Alex Fontenot scored three second-half touchdowns and safety Mikial Onu intercepted two passes as Colorado beat Colorado State 52-31 on Friday night to kick off the Tucker era. "This is a starting point," Tucker said after a game that lasted 3 hours, 19 minutes and featured a 37-minute lightning delay before the opening kick. "I'm looking forward to getting this film watched and getting these corrections."

Fontenot finished with 125 yards rushing to help the Buffs win their fifth straight over the Rams in what was the final Rocky Mountain Showdown held in Denver. The 83 combined points were the most in the rivalry's 91-game history. Tucker was hired in December after serving as defensive coordinator at Georgia. He appreciated all the turnovers. He didn't appreciate allowing 505 total yards. "The yardage and some of the plays we gave up, I'm not happy about that," he said. Fontenot broke out of several tackles on a 22-yard run with 9:16 remaining to give the Buffaloes a 45-31 lead. Jonathan Van Diest helped seal the win by sacking Collin Hill, who fumbled the ball. Mustafa Johnson scooped it up and scored from 9 yards. - AP College Football
