  04/13/21 - Max WrayrSo/2024, Colorado, 6-6, 285 (DS#999 OT) + More +

Ohio State football's deep and versatile offensive line group now has one less player. The Athletic first reported Friday that Max Wray has entered his name in the transfer portal. The redshirt junior from Franklin, Tennessee, was among those believed to be competing for a backup tackle opportunity behind established starters Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Frere. Wray played sparingly in his three seasons. However, he started against Michigan State when both Munford and Petit-Frere were absent due to coronavirus testing protocols. He helped pave the way for a 52-12 victory that day. Wray was a four-star tackle in the 2018 class, ranked No. 121 overall and No. 9 among tackles. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  04/09/21 - Nate LandmanrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 238 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

On Tuesday night, Landman took part in a CU-sponsored virtual event, "Discovering Dorrell." During the event, host Mark Johnson interviewed head coach Karl Dorrell, while a set of former football players spoke with current players. Landman was interviewed by Matt Russell, who won the Butkus Award as an inside linebacker with the Buffs in 1996. During the interview, Landman provided an update on his injury recovery from rupturing his Achilles' tendon on Dec. 12 against Utah.

"The rehab is going a lot better than I thought," said Landman, who was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award last season and is not participating in CU's spring practices this month. "I'm actually ahead of schedule. I've been running for the past two weeks on the underwater treadmill and after this week, they'll move me to the (AlterG treadmill), which is just modified bodyweight running. So, I would say about two, three (weeks), maybe even a month ahead of schedule on that term." The Buffs are hopeful that Landman will be ready to go when preseason camp begins in August. "Nate's in great shape, he looks great," Dorrell said to Johnson. "He's got a great mindset about where he's going, he feels good about where the rehab situation is for him...He's going to be ready to go for sure by the fall before we start training camp." - Daily Camera

  04/09/21 - Colby PursellrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-3, 300 (DS#999 C) + More +

As a freshman in 2018, Colby Pursell became a fixture in the Colorado Buffaloes' lineup and seemed poised to anchor the offensive line for several years. Injuries and illness have limited him to 10 games the past two years, but the 6-foot-4, 305-pound junior is feeling good this spring. "It was kind of a weird little trip I've been on since I've been here, as far as injuries, but right now I'm feeling pretty good," Pursell said Monday after the Buffs' fourth practice of spring. In 2018, Pursell became just the third freshman to start a season opener at center at CU. He wound up starting all 12 games and played more snaps (830) than anyone on the line.

In 2019, he moved to right guard but was limited to seven games (five starts) after having his gallbladder removed in the middle of the season. Last season, Pursell was back at center and started three of the Buffs' six games, but missed three games in the middle of the season because of an injury. This spring, Pursell is working at center - but said he could shift to guard if needed - and is feeling good physically. He gives some of the credit to new director of strength and conditioning Shannon Turley, who was hired on Jan. 29. "I've been working a lot with coach Turley and he's great," Pursell said. "I think he's awesome for us. I think he's helped a lot. - Daily Camera

  04/09/21 - Terrance LangrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-4, 282 (DS#48 DE) + More +

Junior defensive end Terrance Lang was also a part of Tuesday's virtual event, as he was interviewed by former CU defensive lineman Alonzo Barrett (2004-07). Asked about his goals, Lang, who has eight career quarterback sacks, said, "On my mirror in my room I have two goals written out. It's to get a sack a game and the other one is, as far as school, to get a higher GPA than I got last semester. I've got those two goals written on my mirror in my room and I see them every day." Lang is not participating in team workouts this spring because of offseason shoulder surgery, but Dorrell said the 6-foot-7, 290-pound Lang is doing well in conditioning. "He's lapping the defensive lineman," Dorrell told Johnson. "He runs like a deer. … It's an impressive thing to see because he's a fabulous athlete. We're hoping he obviously gets recovered from the shoulder surgery and gets ready to go for the fall. We think he's going to be fantastic." Dorrell added that Lang had his best academic semester in the fall. Last season, Lang had 14 tackles, one sack, and five tackles for loss. - - Daily Camera

  04/08/21 - Carson WellsSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 241 (DS#22 OLB) + More +

Last week, Colorado head football coach Karl Dorrell said the Buffaloes' revamped defense could give the outside linebackers an opportunity to "pin your ears back and go." A smile came across the face of Carson Wells when he was asked about that comment. "It definitely opens it up for us to make more plays," said Wells, a junior outside linebacker. "We've just got to have that dog mindset in our play every play. This defense is really designed for us to make plays. I don't want to get into it too much but it's designed for us to make plays and we've just got to go out there and execute."

Wells is coming off a dominant 2020 season in which he led the country with 2.67 tackles for loss per game. Despite playing just six games, he tied for third nationally with 16 total TFLs. Nationally, he was one of only 15 players with at least 14 TFLs, and the others each played at least nine games. A 6-foot-4, 250-pound fourth-year junior, Wells is the unquestioned leader of the outside linebacker crew, but it's a group with intriguing possibilities. "It is a position that we feel confident that we can be very productive and mainly because of what Carson is able to do with his experience," Dorrell said. "We know that he's going to generate some plays on his side of it." - Daily Camera

  04/04/21 - Juwan MitchellrSr/2024, Colorado, 6-0, 223 (DS#79 ILB) + More +

After a short break, Steve Sarkisian's introduction to the football players at Texas resumed Thursday. The Longhorns, whose spring workouts were shut down March 24 because of what the school described as "student-athletes impacted by COVID-19 protocols," returned to the practice field in the morning. "Clearly we had a little bit of rustiness, having the time off," Sarkisian said. "It was good to have remotely close to our full allotment of players, which is key. This time of year, we're trying to teach schemes on offense, defense and special teams." There was one notable player missing from practice, however. Sarkisian confirmed reports that senior linebacker Juwan Mitchell, who led the team in tackles last season, has entered the transfer portal. He started 13 games over the past two seasons. - Austin American Statesman

  04/01/21 - Alex FontenotrSr/2023, Colorado, 5-11, 200 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Following a breakout season in 2019, Alex Fontenot was looking forward last fall to picking up where he left off. Instead, a hip injury kept Fontenot on the sidelines last season, but the Colorado junior is back this spring and ready to compete. "To me, it felt good," he said after going through CU's first practice of spring on Monday. "Obviously, a little rusty, but that's nothing that practice can't fix for me." Fontenot, listed at 6-feet, 205 pounds, had not practiced since injuring his hip in October, early in CU's COVID-19 delayed preseason camp, and he hasn't played a game since Nov. 30, 2019, at Utah, but was ready to roll on Monday. "He's back and it's good to see him at practice," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. "He feels good. He doesn't look like he's favoring anything. He's making good cuts; he's vertically getting push up the field; he's running strong through the line of scrimmage from what I saw today, so I think he's over the hump. It's good to have him back." Fontenot, who led the Buffs with 874 rushing yards in 2019, said he's felt 100 percent healthy for months. "Getting through this process, really it was just sticking to my rehab that I had to do and really just not going away from that so I can get back on the field as soon as possible," he said. - Daily Camera

  03/26/21 - Mustafa JohnsonrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-0, 288 (DS#64 DT) + More +

Mustafa Johnson knows he doesn't have the prototypical size that the NFL is looking for in defensive linemen. Many of the top line prospects in this year's draft class are between 6-foot-3 and 6-foot-6, with many of them north of 300 pounds. Johnson, a former Colorado star, measured at 6-feet, 280 pounds during the Buffs' annual pro timing day on Monday. "What I lack in size I make up for in versatility and how I play," Johnson said. "I don't play small. I play big." The most dominant defensive lineman at CU in recent years, Johnson, a former junior college transfer, racked up 30 tackles for loss and 16 sacks in 27 career games with the Buffs. Despite playing less than two-and-a-half years worth of games with the Buffs - in large part because of the COVID-19 pandemic shortening the 2020 season - Johnson ranks top 20 in CU history in tackles for loss and top 15 in sacks. Now, he's hoping that NFL scouts look at his productivity, rather than his height. - Daily Camera

  03/22/21 - *William ShermanJr/2021, Colorado, 6-3, 304 (DS#15 OG) + More +

Will Sherman checked just about every box as an accomplished Division I tackle at Colorado. In three seasons in Boulder, he made 15 starts at left tackle and 12 starts at right, anchoring the Buffs' line from both sides while earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2020. But at 6-foot-3, Sherman's lack of height has become an issue as an NFL tackle prospect. That's why he's determined to use his pro day on Monday to show scouts his versatility at guard and center. "I've put a huge emphasis in my training on being able to play all five positions, so I've been snapping the ball a lot to show I can play there and just to let all 32 teams know I can play wherever they need me to play up front," Sherman said. "I really want to show them I can play on the interior."

CU offensive line coach Mitch Rodrigue believes the Allen, Texas, native has the athleticism and intellect to make a position switch. Sherman's only played one game at guard in his career, while in high school, and none at center. "Will's best asset is his athleticism, and he's also a very intellectual player," Rodrigue said. "He works hard on studying extra film and understanding his opponent, and his natural position is going to be center or guard. He's going to excel, learn it really fast and take ownership of it. There's no doubt he can play either of those positions at the next level." - Denver Post

According to 247Sports.com, ongoing back issues led to offensive lineman Jake Wray, a freshman, to walk away from the game. CU confirmed to BuffZone.com that Wray has medically retired. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Wray was a true freshman last season and missed the entire season with injury. Rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, Wray graduated from Marietta (Ga.) High School and enrolled at CU in January of 2020. Wray was one of three offensive linemen signed by CU in 2020, along with Carson Lee and Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan. - Daily Camera

On Wednesday, the NFL announced the list of 323 draft prospects invited to take part in the scouting combine, and former CU tackle William Sherman is on the list. Sherman, a junior last season, elected to forgo his final season at CU to declare for the draft. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Sherman was named second-team All-Pac-12 by coaches and media last season. Sherman is the 11th player in CU history to declare early for the draft. - Daily Camera

  03/03/21 - Nate LandmanrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 238 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

Nate Landman is apparently tackling rehab with the same juice he uses to bring down opposing tailbacks. CU Buffs football coach Karl Dorrell told the Pac-12 Network on Tuesday morning that Landman, his star middle linebacker, is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a rupture to his right Achilles tendon suffered last December in the home finale vs. Utah. "He's doing really well," Dorrell said of Landman, who had surgery last Dec. 15. "He's excited."

While Landman, who elected to return for a fifth season rather than enter the NFL draft, won't participate in spring drills, Dorrell noted that the 6-foot-3 California native "will be doing some stuff on the side … he'll be pushing the envelope as much as he can without driving the doctors crazy." Landman was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection last season after leading CU in tackles (53) and solo stops (39) over five contests. The Buffs are slated to open spring practice March 29. - Denver Post

  02/09/21 - Alex FontenotrSr/2023, Colorado, 5-11, 200 (DS#999 RB) + More +

In each of the last two years, the Colorado football team has gone into a season without much previous experience at running back. Next fall, the Buffaloes could be loaded with experience at the position. Last week, head coach Karl Dorrell said junior Alex Fontenot has "a clean bill of health" after missing last season with a hip injury. A 6-foot, 205-pound back from Richmond, Texas, Fontenot led the Buffs in rushing in 2019 with 874 yards and five touchdowns on 185 carries. He also caught 27 passes for 122 yards. Without him last year, the Buffs discovered a star in sophomore Jarek Broussard, who ran for 895 yards and five touchdowns on 156 carries in only six games. He also had nine catches for 65 yards and was named the Pac-12 offensive player of the year. Looking ahead to the 2021 season, the Buffs could have both of them as weapons on offense. - Daily Camera

  02/04/21 - Jack LambrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 230 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

The Colorado Buffaloes are adding another transfer to the football program. Inside linebacker Jack Lamb, who played at Notre Dame the past three years, announced Thursday on Twitter that he is coming to Boulder. Lamb was not a starter at Notre Dame, but the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder saw time in reserve with the Fighting Irish. Playing mostly special teams this season, Lamb recorded 13 tackles and two quarterback hurries on defense. He had four tackles, including three solo stops, in a 47-40 double overtime win against then-No. 1 Clemson on Nov. 7. - Daily Camera
