  05/29/21 - Jack LambrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 230 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

From "Touchdown Jesus" to "First Down Moses" and other football statues and traditions associated with Notre Dame, Jack Lamb felt fortunate to get a chance to play for the Fighting Irish. He is now, however, embracing a new opportunity to play for the Colorado Buffaloes. An inside linebacker, Lamb will join the Buffs in June as a graduate transfer after three seasons with the Irish. He has three years to play with the Buffs. Former Notre Dame linebacker Jack Lamb is transferring to Colorado.

"When I made a decision to transfer, CU was one of the first places that reached out to me and it was a place that I've been thinking about for a while anyway," said Lamb, who grew up in Temecula, Calif. "I like the area, I like the proximity to home. I think it's a program in the right direction in terms of reaching towards winning more games and possibly towards the Pac-12 championship and giving yourself a shot at the national championship. I think they have all those attributes, and that's important to me. All those things added up." Lamb played for a national championship contender in South Bend, Ind., as the Irish were among the four teams in the College Football Playoff semifinals twice in his three years. Notre Dame is 33-5 over the past three years. - Daily Camera

  05/21/21 - Nate LandmanrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 238 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

The 2022 NFL Draft is about 11 months away and a lot could happen between now and then, but here's a look at CU top potential draft candidates for next year. A senior last year, Landman is taking advantage of the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility. He was having an All-American type of season in 2020 before rupturing his Achilles' tendon in the regular-season finale. An exceptional tackler and run stopper, Landman was possibly a mid-to-late-round pick this year if healthy. If he proves healthy this fall and has a great season, he could be the first Buff off the board. - Daily Camera

  05/21/21 - Taurean Carter IIrSr/2026, Colorado, 6-3, 280 (DS#999 DT) + More +

After feeling his way through the 2020 season and earning a start against LSU toward the end of Arkansas' SEC-only schedule, Carter was overcome with a sense of belonging. The 6-3, 300-pound tackle believes he can compete and more than hold his own against high-caliber offensive linemen and is a fit in the conference. The former Mansfield (Texas) Legacy standout's numbers last season don't jump off the page. He finished with 11 tackles, which was sixth most among the Razorbacks' defensive linemen. But included in his statistics were confidence-building moments and games, particularly against Georgia (2 tackles), Tennessee (3) and LSU (3). It was a significant stepping stone for Carter, who spent the 2019 season on the Razorbacks' scout team and did not travel to road games. Sam Pittman pointed to the lineman as a player who stood out in spring drills and made individual strides.

Arkansas center Ricky Stromberg, who faced off with Carter often during team work, commended him for the manner in which he used his hands as a weapon. Carter's work with his hands gives way to getting extension on his matchup and shedding blocks to make plays. "I love to try to work with my hands," Carter said this spring. "You can't do nothing without your hands, so I try to slow my processes down and think about bringing my hands to the fight. Every time I come off the ball I think of it as a fight. "I'm still working on it. I'm not where I want to be, but I continue to work on it." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  05/10/21 - Max WrayrSo/2024, Colorado, 6-6, 285 (DS#999 OT) + More +

Former Ohio State offensive lineman Max Wray plans to transfer to Colorado. The competition on Colorado's offensive line got tougher on Sunday. Max Wray, a former four-star recruit who played the last three years at Ohio State, is joining the Buffaloes. He has three years of eligibility. Listed at 6-foot-7, 308 pounds on his OSU bio, Wray will join his brother at CU. Jake Wray was a highly-touted recruit for CU last year, but was forced to medically retire this winter and is now working with the program as a filmmaker. Max Wray redshirted at Ohio State in 2018 and appeared in three games in 2019. Last season, he played in seven games, including his first career start against Michigan State, at right tackle. At CU, Wray is expected to immediately compete for a starting job, likely at tackle. He is now one of the most experienced tackles on the team. After the Buffs lost left tackle Will Sherman to the NFL, their top returning tackle, Frank Fillip, suffered a torn labrum in spring. - Daily Camera

  05/10/21 - Daniel AriasrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-4, 208 (DS#76 WR) + More +

A 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior with speed, Arias has been a top breakout candidate the past two years but caught just six passes for 105 yards last year. He has 10 career catches. "People ask me, 'Well what happened with Daniel last year?'" Chiaverini said. "People forget that Daniel got hurt against Stanford (in Week 2). He had a high ankle sprain and … he wasn't the same player after he got injured against Stanford. He's had a phenomenal spring." There are also high expectations for a group of returning freshmen that includes Rice, Chris Carpenter, Montana Lemonious-Craig and Keith Miller III. True freshmen Chase Penry and Ty Robinson will join the group this summer. "We have a lot of really talented players that are fighting for playing time and I tell them this, 'Look, at the end of the day, it's going to be about what you do in practice that's going to get you reps in games,'" Chiaverini said. "They're fighting for those opportunities right now." - Daily Camera

  05/05/21 - Juwan MitchellrSr/2024, Colorado, 6-0, 223 (DS#79 ILB) + More +

Texas linebacker Juwan Mitchell is transferring to Tennessee football. Mitchell announced his decision Monday on Twitter, addressing a major need on Josh Heupel's first Tennessee team. "Get ready for the SEC takeover!" Mitchell wrote. "(Vols football) let's ride. Can't wait to ball out in front of 103,000 every Saturday." The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Mitchell played in 21 games and started 13 in two seasons at Texas. Mitchell led Texas in tackles last season with 62. He also had 4½ tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery for the Longhorns. Mitchell, a Newark, New Jersey, played a season at Butler Community College in Kansas before transferring to Texas. Tennessee's linebacker corps were depleted this offseason. - Knoxville News Sentinel

  05/04/21 - *William ShermanJr/2021, Colorado, 6-3, 304 (DS#15 OG) + More +

William Sherman bet on himself this winter, and it paid off. On Saturday, the former Colorado offensive lineman was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Sherman, who is 6-foot-3, 310 pounds and skipped his senior year with the Buffaloes, was selected 197th overall and was the only lineman drafted by the Patriots. Sherman is the first CU offensive lineman taken within the first six rounds since David Bakhtiari was a fourth-round choice of the Green Bay Packers in 2013. This is the fifth consecutive season CU has had a player drafted. It's the second straight year an offensive lineman was taken after Arlington Hambright was a seventh-round choice of the Chicago Bears in 2020. A three-year starter with the Buffs, Sherman elected to skip his senior season to enter the draft early. He is the 11th CU player to enter the draft early and all 11 have been drafted. - Daily Camera

  04/30/21 - Robert BarnesrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-3, 221 (DS#68 ILB) + More +

When Robert Barnes isn't turning heads, he's crunching them. And if you're trying to get a finger on why the CU Buffs' defense has been the story of the spring in Boulder, the former Oklahoma Sooners defender isn't a bad place to start. "He's probably taken more steps forward than anybody," CU inside linebackers coach Mark Smith said Wednesday of Barnes, a graduate transfer who's in his first spring with the Buffs after playing the previous four seasons with the Sooners. "But he probably started a further ways (back) than anybody...He's a student of the game." Smith said he's been impressed with Barnes' "length" and "power" this month, two traits that played a role in the interception that the inside linebacker notched during last Friday's scrimmage. "(We're) very pleased with Robert," Smith continued. "He's got a way to go, but Robert has come leaps and bounds from the first practice." - Denver Post

  04/29/21 - Josh WattsrJr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 210 (DS#999 P) + More +

Just as the Colorado football team was wrapping up the 2020 season, punter Josh Watts started to feel a bit more comfortable in his role. New to the game last season, Watts said he felt more confident by the time the Buffaloes played in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. Although the season ended at that point, the junior has carried that momentum into the spring. "Towards the back end of the year I started to feel more comfortable, but I feel like I definitely still haven't punted my best in games and I'm looking to do it this year for sure," said Watts, who has two more seasons of eligibility at CU. A native of Hobart, Tasmania, an island state of Australia, Watts, 25, played in the Australian Football League before joining the Buffs in December of 2019. He learned to punt at ProKick Australia Academy - which has sent numerous punters and kickers to United States colleges - but had never played American football until last year. "I had only seen a couple of games," he said. "To be honest, I wasn't that nervous (last season) because I didn't know what to expect." - Daily Camera

  04/29/21 - Brady RussellrSr/2023, Colorado, 6-3, 247 (DS#25 TE) + More +

At the time of Brady Russell's last haircut, he was a student at Fossil Ridge High School who was hoping for a shot at eventually playing Division I football. It's been about six years since Russell cut his hair, he said, and his growth as a player and as a person might be as impressive as the growth of his long locks. Entering his fifth season with the Buffaloes, the former walk-on has become one of the better tight ends in the Pac-12 Conference and a leader in a crowded room. His focus this spring, however, has been on getting healthy.

"It's been very humbling," he said of recovering from a leg injury that caused him to miss most of the shortened 2020 season. "I think it's been good for me in the long run, because it's easy to get ahead of yourself and think...I don't want to say I thought too highly of myself, but this kind of brought me back down another level and made me feel human again, if you will, and kind of grounded me and made me realize what my identity is in." Russell, who joined CU as a walk-on in 2017 and earned a scholarship in 2018, became a regular starter in 2019. He caught 23 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns that season. Last year, Russell, who will be a junior in the fall, was looking to make a bigger impact and caught five passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in the season opener. The next week, he was injured on CU's fourth offensive play at Stanford and didn't play the rest of the season. - Daily Camera

  04/25/21 - Kary KutschrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-4, 297 (DS#61 OG) + More +

After playing mostly on special teams during his first season at CU in 2018, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound Kutsch started all 12 games at left guard in 2019. That's where Kutsch started against UCLA in the first game of the delayed 2020 season, but an injury to Colby Pursell forced Kutsch to step in at center the next two games. After missing the following two games while dealing with COVID, Kutsch returned to the lineup for the Buffs' Alamo Bowl loss against Texas at his more familiar left guard spot. "I think focusing on (left guard) will help a lot," Kutsch said. "I really only got to play one game fully prepared at left guard. I feel like another year is great for improvement. I'm still trying to practice center too in case anything ever happens, but I am focusing more on left guard.

"I think I've made a jump every year, and I think every coach I've had has done something new for me every year, taught me something new. The longer I spend here, the more my confidence builds, and that also helps. Every year I just get more confident in my play." During a session with reporters on Wednesday, CU offensive line coach Mitch Rodrigue noted that it has been difficult to establish continuity along the offensive line this spring. Having a player like Kutsch, a veteran who has logged starts at multiple positions, no doubt is an asset to any offensive line. However, Rodrigue also said that in Kutsch's case, the chance to focus throughout the spring on his familiar, more natural left guard spot will likely give Kutsch a boost going into his extra season. - Daily Camera

  04/19/21 - Ray RobinsonrJr/2024, Colorado, 6-1, 210 (DS#999 SS) + More +

For Ray Robinson, there was some value to getting out of his comfort zone and playing inside linebacker the past two years for the Colorado Buffaloes. The fourth-year sophomore feels more at home this spring, however. A 6-foot-2, 220-pound safety from Highlands Ranch High School, Robinson is back to playing the position he started with at CU. "I definitely feel more comfortable playing a strong safety role," he said Friday after the Buffs completed the ninth of their 15 spring practices. "It's kind of good to get back to my roots. I'm definitely starting to feel really comfortable and smooth back at that position."

A first-team all-conference performer as a junior at Highlands Ranch, Robinson missed his senior year with a torn ACL in his knee. He then redshirted in 2018 and has been one of CU's better special teams players the past two years. He has yet to play a snap on defense, however. "It's absolutely been a humbling experience," he said. "Just kind of patiently waiting my turn for the past couple of years, but I also think it was good for me to get that experience of just being out on the field and getting a feel for it. … I think it's all led me to be more comfortable with where I'm at today. I'm grateful for it and I'm grateful for where I'm at now." - Daily Camera

  04/18/21 - Taurean Carter IIrSr/2026, Colorado, 6-3, 280 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Taurean Carter is moving on up this spring for the Arkansas Razorbacks. An ankle injury to returning starter Isaiah Nichols at defensive tackle has slowed the Springdale junior much of the spring, and Carter has gotten plenty of work on the first unit for the University of Arkansas defense. Coach Sam Pittman, asked on Wednesday who has surprised him this spring, brought up Carter first. "Taurean Carter's had a really good spring," Pittman said, "along with Zach Williams, who is at 265 now. "The D-line has surprised me. They're playing better ball than possibly what I might have thought."

The 6-3, 298-pound redshirt sophomore saw action behind Jonathan Marshall and Nichols in eight games last season and notched 11 tackles and a pass breakup. When covid-19 decimated the Hogs' front for the LSU game late in the season, Carter got a start and held up well against the Tigers. "Looking at the amount of plays that I had and the stats I was able to come up with at the end of the year, I feel like I'm fit for this conference and I'm able to compete," Carter said. "I just have little things I've got to work on, such as finishing. Finishing to the quarterback. Putting effort here and there." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  04/13/21 - Maurice BellrSr/2024, Colorado, 6-0, 185 (DS#999 WR) + More +

When Maurice Bell looks back at the 2020 season, he can't help but think about missed opportunities on kickoff returns. "I should have had three (touchdowns) last year," said Bell, a junior receiver with the Colorado Buffaloes. "This year we're gonna have to go for at least five. I've got some making up to do." Now one of the veterans in the receiver room, Bell is looking for big things next season, on offense and in special teams. Last season, the 6-foot, 180-pound Bell earned the most extensive playing time of his career and, including the Valero Alamo Bowl, caught 10 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown, while also gaining 151 yards on seven kickoff returns. Bell has been a bit limited because of injury in the early going of spring drills, but offensive coordinator/receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini said the junior is aiming to be even better than last fall. "Maurice has worked really hard this offseason," Chiaverini said. "He's worked hard in the weight room, he's worked hard obviously in the offseason conditioning program. I'm excited to see him take the next step this year." - Daily Camera

  04/13/21 - Jaylon JacksonrSr/2023, Colorado, 5-09, 170 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Although he's been at the University of Colorado for two years and is already going into his third season with the football team, Janaz Jordan has not been in the spotlight. He has been a valuable piece to the puzzle on the Buffaloes' defensive line, however. A former junior college transfer, Jordan earned his way into the starting lineup last season and doesn't appear to be slowing down as the Buffs have gone through the first five practices of spring. "Janaz has been a pleasant surprise from a year ago," CU defensive coordinator Chris Wilson said this week. "He's got a lot of growth in him. He's got a really high ceiling." Listed at 6-foot-4, 305 pounds, Jordan took over as the starting nose tackle for the last four games of the abbreviated 2020 season, finishing with 11 tackles. He had 12 tackles in a reserve role in 2019.

Jordan came to CU after playing his freshman year at Hinds (Miss.) Community College. Although he was recruited by the previous coaching staff, Jordan fits well in Wilson's system. "There's been a lot of D-line coaches here in the last few years and what we're doing now is we've got a system and we've got a guy (Jordan) who actually believes in what we're doing right now," Wilson said. "What I mean by that is we'll tailor everything towards our players, so we're asking these guys to do things that they can do. It's not about the system. It's really about the personnel, so he fits our personnel. He's big, he's strong, he's athletic, and we've just got to keep working on this conditioning." - Daily Camera
