Trevor Lawrence has had plenty of big moments at Death Valley. Clemson's star quarterback had one of the biggest of his life on Friday. Lawrence proposed to his longtime girlfriend and high school sweetheart Marissa Mowry on Friday at Memorial Stadium, and the two are now engaged, they announced on social media. "Easiest YES of my life!!!" Mowry posted on Instagram. "FOREVER. You're everything I've dreamed of. I love you and can't wait to marry you. #Engaged" Lawrence added on his own Instagram post.

Lawrence and Mowry have been in a relationship dating back to their time at Cartersville High in Georgia where Lawrence was the star QB. Lawrence is now the star quarterback at Clemson and one of the Heisman favorites entering the 2020 season. Mowry plays soccer at Anderson University. Wrigley Field won't host the scheduled Nov. 7 football game between Northwestern and Wisconsin because of COVID-19 concerns. The decision was announced Wednesday after the schools consulted with the Chicago Cubs, state and local authorities and the Big Ten "in consideration of the myriad challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic," Northwestern said in a statement. A team spokesman said it's "safe to assume" the game would take place at Northwestern's Ryan Field instead, although uncertainty about the college football season looms. There won't be any activity at South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium or Clemson's Memorial Stadium if things don't change with the trajectory of COVID-19 cases, Gov. Henry McMaster warned Wednesday. McMaster's current executive order bans such things as spectator sports, concerts and movie theaters. That's been the case since the beginning of the pandemic in March. That ban will remain in place until the state turns the corner with the cornavirus, the governor said sternly. "I will not remove those restrictions. I cannot lift those restrictions, if these numbers continue to rise and the danger persists. I can't do it. I won't do it," McMaster said. "This fall will not be like other falls. We will not be able to have college football. We will not be able to have high school football."

On Wednesday, there were 1,497 new COVID-19 infections reported in South Carolina, a day after a record 1,741 new cases. The Palmetto State has been at or above record daily coronavirus case counts over the last three weeks. The daily percentage of positive cases among what's been tested also continues to rise, one indicator that the virus' activity is increasing. "Let me make it very clear. Wear a mask and social distance now so we can enjoy high school and college football in South Carolina this fall," McMaster posted to Twitter minutes after Wednesday's press conference. - The State

Clemson legends C.J. Spiller and Donnell Woolford join former South Carolina coach Jim Carlen on the 2021 ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. Spiller was a star running back at Clemson from 2006 to 2009, and Woolford was a defensive back for the Tigers from 1985 to 1988. Spiller is one of the most productive running backs in Clemson history and was named a first team All-American kick returner his senior year in 2009. That is the same season he was named ACC Player of the Year after rushing for 1,212 yards and 12 touchdowns. Spiller was taken ninth overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills and made one Pro Bowl in his eight-year career. - The Post and Courier

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is aware that some fans disagree with his decision to be so vocal while speaking out against racism, and to those people Lawrence has a message: good riddance. "It's important for us to stand up for something. It's easy to stay quiet because some people don't want to make people mad," Lawrence said. "But my thoughts on it are - those aren't the kind of fans, followers, whatever (that) you want, if it makes them mad if you stand up for equality." The Tigers star and arguably the face of college football, Lawrence first spoke out about George Floyd's death and the need for change on Twitter May 29, four days after Floyd died when a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes.

"There has to be a shift in the way of thinking. Rational must outweigh irrational. Justice must outweigh injustice. Love must outweigh hate. If you put yourself in someone else's shoes and you don't like how it feels - that's when you know things need to change," Lawrence posted. "I'm siding with my brothers that deal, and continuously deal, with things I will never experience. The injustice is clear... and so is the hate. It can no longer be explained away. If you're still 'explaining' it - check your heart and ask why." The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee on Thursday announced the approval of a modified "training camp" model for the 2020 season, including walkthroughs to begin in late July. Because most programs had little or no spring practice due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, schools will be allowed to begin full-squad activities at an earlier date than normal. According to the NCAA's announcement, the new policies assume local and state health policies allow for football activities. "This is the culmination of a significant amount of collaboration in our effort to find the best solution for Division I football institutions," said Shane Lyons, chair of the committee and director of athletics at West Virginia. "Our student-athletes, conference commissioners, coaches and health and safety professionals helped mold the model we are proposing." If schools have their first regular-season game scheduled for Sept. 5, teams could hold mandatory weight training, conditioning and film review for up to eight hours per week from July 13-23. Clemson fans have long wondered why NFL star DeAndre Hopkins refers to himself as a Daniel High alum instead of a Clemson product during introductions for prime time NFL games. On Monday, arguably the best receiver in the world explained why. Hopkins said on an Instagram post that he doesn't associate himself with Clemson during introductions because of the university's ties to John C. Calhoun. The South Carolina native and politician, who was the vice president of the United States from 1825-1832, is well known for his pro-slavery stance. The Clemson University website says Calhoun "declared that slavery was not an 'evil,' but rather a 'positive good."

The honors college on Clemson's campus is named the "Calhoun Honors College" after John Calhoun. "As we watch everything happening in the world, I want to bring up something that has been bothering me for a long time in my community," Hopkins posted on social media. "Clemson University still honors the name of well known slave owner and pro-slavery politician John C. Calhoun on its buildings, signs, and in the name of its honors program." A petition was started four days ago to change the name of the building. - The State

Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney is catching more heat after a photo surfaced on Twitter Saturday that appeared to show him wearing a "Football Matters" shirt. The shirt added to Swinney's problems after his response to the death of George Floyd that has prompted widespread protests and a national discussion on race. Floyd, a black man, died after Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, pressed his knee into the back of Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. The tweet showing Swinney in the shirt has since been deleted, but there are plenty of screenshots of the post. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has forcefully spoke out against racial injustice, defended Swinney wearing the shirt. Coach Swinney's shirt, in any way, is not mocking the Black Lives Matter movement. He has been wearing the shirt for months in meetings. Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross had surgery Friday for a congenital fusion in his spine that will keep him off the field this upcoming season. Ross said on social media that the operation "went great" and he was ready to get to work to return to football. Ross was hurt in March during spring workouts with what looked like a shoulder injury. But X-rays revealed that two vertebrae in his spine were fused and he had a bulging disc, according to Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

Ross is a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Phenix City, Alabama led the Tigers with 66 catches last season for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. He was expected to become Clemson's featured receiver after Tee Higgins left for the NFL after this past season. Ross first made his mark as a freshman, catching 12 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns in Clemson's two College Football Playoff games on the way to the national championship. Ross was projected as a top-10 selection in the next NFL draft before the injury. - AP College Football

The 2020 college football season could be shortened so that conference championship games would be completed by Thanksgiving, according to a report Wednesday by The New York Times. NCAA president Mark Emmert met with members of Congress via conference call Wednesday to discuss contingency plans in relation to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, according to the report. The news came as college football players began returning to campus for the first time since March to participate in strength & conditioning workouts.

Emmert told House members that the season would begin as scheduled on Labor Day weekend if local health guidelines allow it. Teams typically play their final regular-season game on Thanksgiving weekend, with conference championship games the first week of December. However, with a "second wave" of COVID-19 feared as weather turns cold, there appears to be urgency to finish the season earlier than normal. Several schools are planning to return to on-campus classes this fall, but cease in-person instruction following the Thanksgiving holiday. - Birmingham News

Clemson's Travis Etienne is closing in on the ACC career rushing record N.C. State's Ted Brown has held for more than 40 years. Officially, Etienne needs 565 yards this season as a senior to surpass Brown's record of 4,602. That's how the record book sees it, anyway. Brown, though, actually gained an additional 399 yards in bowl games during his Wolfpack career, which if counted would make his record tougher for Etienne to break. But those yards aren't counted for Brown even though the yards Etienne has gained playing in three ACC championship games and five College Football Playoff games are counted toward his total.

That's right - the NCAA, and ACC by extension, each counts eight additional games for Etienne that it wouldn't have counted for Brown. Etienne rushed for 625 yards in those eight games. If Clemson makes the postseason this year, Etienne can possibly end his career having played in 11 postseason games that count toward his statistics - almost a full season's worth - while Brown's three bowl game performances don't count at all. Is this fair? And how can this be? Well, it's a statistical oddity of the NCAA's creation that remains a source of debate within college football circles. While some want it fixed, others are against it. - The State

Clemson star receiver Justyn Ross will miss the 2020 season, and his football career could be in jeopardy. Ross has a "congenital fusion" in his spine that he's had since birth, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told reporters Monday. Ross is slated to have surgery on Friday. The condition was discovered on an X-ray after Ross felt stinger-like symptoms during spring practice. "Nobody to this point knew that he had that, and he's had no issues his whole career. Because of the situation when they did this X-ray, it showed up. Very concerned," Swinney said. "And he had a little bit of a bulging disc as well. And that is an issue. There's been many people play football with a surgical fusion. That happens a lot of times. "But we don't know of one that's had a surgical and a congenital" issue, Swinney said.

Ross missed Clemson's final two workouts of the spring - a practice on March 11 and a scrimmage on March 13. The March 13 workout was Clemson's final one of the spring as the final six spring practices were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Phenix City, Alabama native had 66 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was first on the team in receptions and second in yards. - The State
