  12/09/22 - Josh WhylerSr/2023, Cincinnati, 6-7, 248 (DS#10 TE) + More +

One of the Cincinnati players who won't be available for the Fenway Bowl is senior tight end Josh Whyle. The 2022 first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection announced Tuesday he is opting out of the bowl game to focus on preparing for the 2023 NFL Draft. "What I'll miss most about Cincinnati is the locker room," Whyle wrote to his Bearcats coaches and teammates in a Twitter post. "None of our goals and dreams would've been possible if it wasn't for the tight-knit bond we created. Thank you for always believing in me, trusting me, and pushing me to be the best version of myself."

Whyle, a former La Salle High School standout, also thanked his family, or the "Whyle Crew," and the Cincinnati fans, who Whyle said "made everything worth it." "With that said, this chapter of my life has come to an end, and another is beginning," Whyle wrote. "...I am excited for what's to come." Whyle became a three-time all-conference honoree last week, earning a 2022 first-team nod to go along with his honorable mention in 2021 and second-team honors in 2020. Whyle finished with 32 receptions for 326 yards and three touchdowns this season. Whyle ends his Cincinnati career with 15 touchdowns, the most career scores by a tight end in program history. - Cincinnati Enquirer

2022 RAY GUY AWARD FINALIST (BEST COLLEGIATE PUNTER): Mason Fletcher, Cincinnati,...Fletcher, a native of Melbourne, Australia, is joined by Rutgers' Adam Korsak and Michigan State's Bryce Baringer as finalists. The winner will be announced on the 32nd annual The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. Fletcher ranks fourth nationally in average (46.7) and the Bearcats' net average of 44.69 sits second-best in the country. He has boomed 28 punts inside the 20 and sent 14 at least 50 yards with only two touchbacks in 55 attempts. Fletcher is a two-time AAC Special Teams Player of the Week and was selected as the Ray Guy National Punter of the Week earlier this season.

He shattered UC and AAC records at SMU last month. Fletcher booted an incredible 84-yard punt in the first quarter against the Mustangs, breaking the 46-year-old Cincinnati record by six yards as well as the AAC record by five yards. The previous UC mark of 78 yards was set by Mike Connell in 1976. Fletcher sent each of his three punts at least 50 yards with two dropping inside the 20-yard line versus SMU. His 65.0 average also shattered the UC and AAC marks, and remains the best single-game average in college football in 2022. Current Cincinnati Bengals punter Kevin Huber held the old UC mark of 58.7 - set in 2007. He is the third Bearcat to be named a finalist for the prestigious punting award, joining Kevin Huber (2008) and James Smith (2018). - Cincinnati Football

Cincinnati has hired Louisville's Scott Satterfield to be its next coach, the university announced Monday. Louisville was 7-5 this season under Satterfield and earned a berth in the Fenway Bowl, where coincidentally it will face Cincinnati. He replaces Luke Fickell, who recently left to become coach at Wisconsin. Satterfield said he was honored to become coach of the Bearcats and looked forward to continuing the program's winning tradition. "I'm excited to take Cincinnati into the Big 12 this fall and ready to compete for championships," he said in a statement. "I'm most looking forward to meeting the current team and beginning to build relationships with these young men. We will hit the ground running today." Athletic director John Cunningham called Satterfield "a proven winner" and noted his competitiveness and culture-building.

"He's an innovative offensive mind and a leader who develops men on and off the field," Cunningham said in the statement. "He's the perfect fit to grow this program and lead us into the Big 12 next season and beyond." The Cardinals overcame starts of 2-3 overall and 0-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 5-2 stretch run highlighted by wins over then-No. 10 Wake Forest, Pittsburgh and North Carolina State. Their disappointing start fueled speculation at midseason that Satterfield would be fired before Louisville won 34-17 at Virginia to begin its second-half surge toward bowl eligibility. It also finished 4-4 in league play despite a 31-16 loss at Clemson. - AP College Football

  10/22/22 - Charles McClellandrSr/2023, Cincinnati, 5-11, 192 (DS#41 RB) + More +

Ryan Coe kicked a school-record five field goals, including a season-long 52-yarder, and No. 21 Cincinnati broke up a game-tying two-point play in the closing minutes to hold on for a 29-27 win over SMU on Saturday for its sixth consecutive win. Charles McClelland and Ryan Montgomery scored on runs of 76 yards and 1 yard for the Bearcats (6-1, 3-0 American), who won their 19th in a row against against American Athletic Conference opponents. Tyler Lavine scored on a 1-yard plunge with 1:57 to pull SMU (3-4, 1-2) within two, but Preston Stone's 2-point conversion pass intended for Roderick Daniels Jr. was incomplete. Stone, a redshirt freshman, replaced starter Tanner Mordecai, who left the game and the field late in the third quarter with an apparent injury.

Coe's other field goals were from 44, 31, 30 and 25 yards. He's in first season at Cincinnati after kicking for Delaware, where he hit from 53 yards. Coe had a 45-yard attempt blocked in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati's Mason Fletcher boomed an 84-yard punt with the help of a healthy breeze at his back following the Bearcats' first possession for the longest punt in college football this season and an AAC and school record. The sophomore from Australia made contact at Cincinnati's 5-yard line. The ball landed at SMU's 20 and bounced into the end zone for a touchback. The Mustangs' other touchdowns came on a 3-yard run by TJ McDaniel in the second quarter, a 1-yard pass from Mordecai to Jordan Kerley in the second quarter and a 16-yard pass from Stone to RJ Maryland in the fourth quarter. - Cincinnati/AP College Football
