  2023 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jay Person, Sr., DL, Chattanooga,...Chattanooga's Person posted 53 tackles this season, with 16 of those going for lost yardage, leading the SoCon. His average of 1.45 TFLs ranks 14th in the FCS. Person leads the conference in sacks with 8.5 this season, ranking 20th in the FCS with 0.77 per game. Against Mercer on Oct. 14, Person had 4.0 TFLs, tying a career best. He also had a sack and a forced fumble in that game, leading to him being named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 16. The Mocs have won it in three straight years, as Cole Strange shared the honor in 2020-21 before winning it outright in 2021. Curtis helped Chattanooga rank second in the SoCon and 17th in the FCS in sacks allowed at just 1.27 per game.   NOV 7 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Reuben Lowery III, So., DB, Chattanooga, Powder Springs, Ga.,...Chattanooga defensive back Reuben Lowery III had nine tackles (eight solo) and a fumble recovery as the Mocs downed The Citadel 31-21 on Saturday. His first-quarter fumble recovery, one of two for UTC on the day, gave the Mocs the ball deep in The Citadel territory and led to a field goal for Chattanooga's first points of the day. Lowery, who found out on game day that he was moving from slot to safety due to a flu outbreak on the team, added an 8-yard sack, the first of his career, that effectively ended the game, giving the ball back to Chattanooga on downs with 1:18 to play.   Ailym Ford rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns to lead Chattanooga to a 31-21 victory over The Citadel on Saturday. Ford put Chattanooga (7-2, 5-1 Southern Conference) on top for good early in the second quarter when he capped a seven-play, 57-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Mocs a 10-7 lead. Ford's 6-yard scoring run early in the third quarter made it 17-7, Preston Hutchinson connected with freshman Camden Overton for a 36-yard touchdown and the Mocs led 24-7 heading to the final period. Ford carried 29 times for Chattanooga and he also caught three passes for a team-high 67 yards. Hutchinson completed 12 of 20 passes for 202 yards with one interception. Peyton Derrick totaled 118 yards on 11-of-13 passing for The Citadel (2-7, 2-5) with two touchdowns and an interception. Freshman Christian Hilton and Cooper Wallace had the touchdown catches.   OCT 24 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kameron Brown, Jr., DB, Chattanooga, Mobile, Ala.,...Chattanooga defensive back Kameron Brown had a banner day in Saturday's 41-21 win over then-No. 11/11 Mercer, pacing a Mocs defense that forced six turnovers in the clash between ranked SoCon squads. Brown helped set the tone early, picking off a pass on Mercer's first offensive series and returning it 53 yards for a touchdown just 3:05 into the contest. The junior from Mobile, Alabama, logged his second turnover of the day late in the fourth quarter, intercepting a pass in the end zone to snuff any hopes of a Bears rally. Brown also added three tackles on the afternoon for Chattanooga, which was named the FedEx Ground FCS National Team of the Week by Stats Perform.   OCT 24 STATS FEDEX GROUND FCS NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK: Chattanooga (41-21 win over Mercer),...Chattanooga won one of the season's bigger SoCon games by posting a 6-0 turnover advantage against a Mercer squad that entered with a plus-nine ratio. Kameron Brown had a pair of interceptions, including a 53-yard pick-six just over three minutes into the game. Preston Hutchinson passed for 291 yards and three touchdowns, while Ailym Ford surpassed 3,000 career rushing yards with 123 yards and a TD. The Mocs (6-1, 4-0) share first place with Samford.   Preston Hutchinson threw three touchdown passes and Chattanooga had six takeaways in knocking off Mercer 41-21 on Saturday in a matchup of teams unbeaten in Southern Conference play. Hutchinson was 20 of 32 with 291 yards passing without an interception. Ailym Ford, the SoCon's leading rusher, added 123 yards on 22 carries with a score and went over 3,000 career yards. Jamoi Mayes made eight catches for 121 yards and a TD for the Mocs (6-1, 4-0), ranked eighth in the FCS coaches poll. Mercer (6-2, 4-1), ranked 11th, came into the game as the nation's leader with 18 takeaways but had none against the Mocs. Mercer's Fred Payton entered the game 21 passing touchdowns and just one interception but threw three picks Saturday, including one Kameron Brown returned 53 yards for a TD. Brown had two picks. Payton did throw for three scores to break a tie for the most in a season for a Bear. Ty James caught seven passes for 126 yards with a TD.   OCT 10 PIONEER FOOTBALL CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clayborne Fields III, Marist,...Fields turned the tide with two touchdowns in 1:29, leading Marist to a 45-31 PFL victory at Stetson, Saturday. With the game tied 31-31, he gave Marist the lead with an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown. On the ensuing Stetson drive, Fields sealed the victory with an interception at the Marist 30-yard line that he returned 70 yards for a touchdown (fourth longest pick-six in the FCS this season).   SEPT 19 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Preston Hutchinson, Sr., QB, Chattanooga, Mason, Ohio,...Quarterback Preston Hutchinson earned his second straight SoCon weekly honor after accounting for five touchdowns in Chattanooga's 44-14 win over North Alabama on Saturday. The senior from Mason, Ohio, completed 22 of his 31 pass attempts for 303 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 10 yards and two more scores. Hutchinson, who turned in a pass efficiency rating of 178.55, became the first Moc to total five TDs since Alejandro Bennifield in 2018 and is the first UTC quarterback to rush for multiple touchdowns in consecutive games since Jacob Huesman did so in 2015. Hutchinson is the first Mocs QB to throw for 300 yards since Nick Tiano in 2018.   SEPT 12 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Preston Hutchinson, Sr., QB, Chattanooga, Mason, Ohio,...Quarterback Preston Hutchinson was responsible for three touchdowns in Chattanooga's 38-20 win at Eastern Illinois on Saturday. The senior from Mason, Ohio, carried six times for 64 yards and two TDs, averaging 10.7 yards per carry and scoring on runs of 20 and 14 yards. Hutchinson also completed 17 of his 27 passes for 278 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown, giving him a pass efficiency of 154.27 on the afternoon. The Eastern Michigan graduate transfer, making just his second start at Chattanooga, rolled up 342 yards of total offense on the day in helping the Mocs move to 2-0 on the season. Hutchinson also pinned the Panthers inside their own 10-yard line twice on pooch punts. East Tennessee State led 13-3 heading into the fourth quarter. Ford scored on a 9-yard touchdown run with 14:22 remaining. Preston Hutchinson tossed a 11-yard TD pass to James Mayes about four minutes later that gave 10th-ranked Chattanooga (4-1, 2-0 Southern Conference) the lead for good. Tyler Keltner's 31-yard field goal pulled ETSU (2-3, 0-3) to 17-16 with 7:10 remaining before Ford sealed it with his 1-yard scoring run that capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive for the Mocs.
