SEPT 6 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Charlotte QB Chris Reynolds led the 49ers' dramatic first-ever win over a power five opponent, 31-28, against Duke. The two-time team captain threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth in the victory. Reynolds opened the scoring with a 56-yard touchdown strike on the 49ers' first drive. On Charlotte's final two drives of the seesaw battle, Reynolds was 9-of-10 for 161 yards and threw for two touchdowns in the final three minutes to secure the historic win. The game-winner came on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Shadrick Byrd with 33 seconds remaining. Reynolds notched his school-record fourth career 300-yard passing game (324 yards) and figured in all four of the 49ers touchdowns by passing for three and running for a fourth. He also moved to within 39 yards of the 49ers all-time record with 5,366 career passing yards. - Conference USA Football

Charlotte 49ers coach Will Healy propped his son Eli up on his lap at his postgame news conference and tried to hold back tears as he took in the magnitude of the moment. The 49ers football program had just taken a huge step forward - and he knew it. Chris Reynolds threw for 324 yards with three touchdowns, including an 11-yard scoring strike to Shadrick Byrd with 33 seconds left and Charlotte knocked off Duke 31-28 on Friday night for the school's first ever win against a Power Five team. "I get the emotional side from my dad," Healy said. "He cries about everything and I think I'm becoming like that." There were times Healy wondered if he and his staff were headed in the right direction, and having nine games from their original schedule in 2020 cancelled or postponed due to Covid didn't help matters. The team wound up only playing six games last season - often scrambling to find an opponent to play - and won two of them in what amounted to a lost season. - Charlotte/AP College Football

The waiting, North Carolina receiver Justin Olson admitted, was the hardest part. Two years into his collegiate career and he's collected exactly zero passes. Not even in the spring game. He's rarely even got the opportunity to line up at receiver. That'll all change this season. Olson's turn has arrived. He may be the best receiver no one outside of Chapel Hill has paid attention to - but to be fair, there was really no reason to do so. "I've challenged Justin to try to carve out a role for himself," UNC receivers coach Lonnie Galloway said. "As a group, your peers know who should be out there playing, and they (receivers) all have confidence in him and Sam (Howell) and the quarterbacks have confidence in him."

Olson has established himself as a potential starter for in the wake of Dyami Brown and Daz Newsome going to the NFL. Olson has practiced at both a slot receiver and on the outside. His speed will place him among Carolina's new deep threats with Antoine Green and Khafre Brown. "There was a lot of times where it was hard, you know," Olson said. "Not even traveling my freshman year, watching from my house. I mean, that hurt. I want to be with the team. But you look at the roster and you're like, 'OK, well, Dyami's a great player." - Raleigh News Observer

Remember the upbeat young Miami defensive tackle caught on camera dancing during games - in particular during the November 2019 outing against the FIU Panthers, who embarrassed the Hurricanes 30-24 at Marlins Park? His name is Jalar Holley, and he has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Holley, a consensus three-star prospect in the recruiting class of 2019, will be a repeat redshirt freshman in 2021 because the NCAA gave all players an extra year of eligibility. He played in seven games last season and finished with six tackles. He is listed on the UM roster as 6-2 and 282 pounds and is from Queens, New York. - Miami Herald

A family connection and a chance to make an impact in a new conference attracted Auburn transfer defensive lineman Jaren Handy to Indiana. Handy watched the Hoosiers weekly last season as his cousin, standout wide receiver Ty Fryfogle, caught pass after pass from quarterbacks Michael Penix Jr. and Jack Tuttle. "I felt like they should have won every game," Handy said of IU's 6-2 season. "The Ohio State game. I was really upset with them with the Ole Miss game because I really felt like they could have pulled it out." The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Handy views himself as someone who can help make a difference defensively, which is why he transferred to IU. "I felt like I had a pretty good chance to play," Handy said. "The team was up and coming. I feel like we were one step away from, you know, winning the Big Ten and getting a championship at the end."

Handy, a junior, played seven games at defensive end at Auburn last season, recording his first career sack in the Iron Bowl game against rival Alabama and a tackle for loss against Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl. A former top-100 national recruit from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Handy projects to bring more speed and athleticism to IU's defensive front. He's preparing to play the bull position in IU's 4-2-5 defense and wants to get down to a playing weight of 255 to 260 pounds. "I'm going to be pass rushing, dropping back in coverage and moving around and stuff like that," Handy said. "I feel like it would be a great chance to showcase my talents and what I can do." - Herald Bulletin

Former Auburn defensive lineman Jaren Handy has a new home, and it's in the Big Ten. The former four-star prospect, who entered the transfer portal at the end of April following the conclusion of spring practices, announced on Wednesday that he has committed to Indiana. Once a top-100 prospect coming out of Hattiesburg, Miss., in the 2019 class, Handy appeared in 14 games during his first two seasons at Auburn. He totaled just 10 tackles, including three for a loss and one sack, during that time while adding one pass breakup. Handy spent this spring at Auburn's newly listed edge defender spot in defensive coordinator Derek Mason's hybrid 3-4 scheme, though Mason said in March that the 6-foot-5, 252-pounder could also line up at defensive end and as a 4-technique, providing the Tigers with versatility along the defensive front. - Birmingham News

On the same day Lance Leipold had his introductory press conference at the University of Kansas, one of the scholarship players on the roster the new head football coach inherited decided to leave the Jayhawks. Valerian Agbaw Jr., who would've been a sophomore in the KU football secondary this coming season, announced Monday his plans to enter the NCAA's transfer portal. Agbaw was a member of KU's 2019 recruiting class, the first one assembled by Miles. Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals as a high schooler out of Powder Springs, Georgia, Agbaw played sparingly as a reserve in 2019 but didn't record any statistics, and then redshirted in 2020. - Lawrence Journal World

Ben DeLuca, the Bishop Moore safety who went on to big things at UNC-Charlotte, sat through the NFL draft this weekend hoping to hear his name. Prior to the event, however, DeLuca already had made up his mind. If he was drafted, great. If he was not drafted, it wasn't going to have a significant impact on him. DeLuca went undrafted after 259 players heard their phones ring this weekend, but the 6-foot-1, 215-pound DeLuca wasn't concerned. It will just push him harder, the same way many things have pushed him throughout his career. "It's just one of those things that's kinda out of your hands and so you just have to trust God and trust that you're going to go where you need to go," DeLuca said. "I'm excited that part is over and now I just get to go play football." Within an hour of the draft's completion DeLuca was already a member, via free agency, of the Los Angeles Chargers, and he was happy about his choice. - Charlotte Observer

Auburn is set to lose another one of the top players from its 2019 signing class. Defensive end Jaren Handy entered the NCAA transfer portal Friday morning, AL.com has learned. Handy, who didn't participate in the team's spring game earlier this month, posted just three tackles and a sack as a sophomore last season. With Handy leaving, six of the top 11 ranked players from that 2019 Tigers class are no longer with the program, including three of the top five. - Birmingham News

It appears Auburn's defensive front is on the verge of taking another considerable hit this spring. According to multiple reports, Auburn Edge player Jaren Handy has entered the transfer portal. The news comes after the rising junior was one of several players who did not attend the Tigers' A-Day spring game on April 17. Handy's decision was first reported by AL.com's Matt Zenitz. A former four-star recruit from Hattiesburg, Miss., the 6-foot-5, 242-pound Handy has been in the mix for playing time during his two years at Auburn. Handy appeared in seven games in 2019 and in seven games in 2020. He finished his sophomore year with three tackles, including his first career sack in the Tigers' Iron Bowl showdown with Alabama. Handy has 10 total tackles, one sack and one pass defended during his time with the Tigers. - Opelika-Auburn News

The 49ers are not short on new faces this season. Multiple Power Five transfers made immediate impacts in the spring game, starting with safety Jon Alexander intercepting James Foster's first pass. Foster turned the ball over twice on the day with the interception and a fumbled snap in the red zone. Kofi Wardlow, a defensive end transfer from Notre Dame, made his presence felt with a sack, fumble recovery and multiple quarterback hurries. Wardlow is making a strong case to start with Markees Watts as the defensive end combo. - Central Michigan Life

The Charlotte 49ers' spring practice began last Thursday with all eyes on the quarterbacks. Newcomer James Foster, a former four-star recruit and transfer from Texas A&M, is looking for the first meaningful playing time of his career. He sat behind Kellen Mond in College Station and is now competing with three-year starter Chris Reynolds for the starting role. But 49ers coach Will Healy clarified the position battle status Monday through three spring practices: It's Reynolds' job to lose. "Somebody is going to have to come in and beat him out for that to happen," Healy said regarding Reynolds. "There's nobody I believe in more than him. I'm just proud of who he's become as a leader. Everything you throw at him, he conquers. He's a great guy to have as the face of your program." News broke last December that the 49ers landed their highest-rated transfer ever in Foster. He joins the QB mix with Reynolds, last year's backup Dom Shoffner, and incoming freshman Xavier Williams as the fourth quarterback on scholarship. - Charlotte Observer

  03/27/21 - TJ MoorerSr/2023, Charlotte + More +

Offensive lineman T.J. Moore has decided to move on from UF. Less than a week removed from spring football, Florida's offensive line suffered some attrition Thursday with the departure of tackle T.J. Moore. The redshirt senior has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will look to play elsewhere with his remaining eligibility. The 6-foot-5, 309-pound Moore was a reserve lineman in his three seasons of action, appearing in less games last year (four) than he did in 2019 (13). Moore was a consensus four-star recruit and Rivals250 member in the Class of 2017. He's from Charlotte, N.C. and attended Mallard Creek, the same high school as former Florida offensive tackle D.J.   Jalon Jones threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Jackson State rolled past NAIA Edward Waters 53-0 in Deion Sanders' coaching debut on Sunday. Kymani Clarke scored two rushing touchdowns. Warren Newman showed some dazzling speed as a wideout and kick returner and caught a 6-yard pass from Jones for JSU's first score. After a week of rare freezing weather had many residents of Jackson waiting in long lines for bottled drinking water, the atmosphere among 12,000 fans sprinkled within Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium (44,215 capacity) was festive. National Guard soldiers shot a cannon and did pushups after Jackson State scores, and Sanders, an NFL Hall-of-Famer, had a bucket of ice dumped over his head at the end of the game as the people in the stands cheered the win. - Jackson State/AP College Football
