  11/10/19 - Devon ModsterrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Devon Modster wasn't too impressed with the best game of his career. That it helped stop California's four-game losing streak was much more important to the Golden Bears quarterback. Modster passed for a career-high three touchdowns and rushed for a fourth in his first game back from injury, California's defense made a pivotal stop late in the fourth quarter, and the Golden Bears beat the Cougars 33-20 on Saturday night to end a four-game losing streak. "I would say it was average," Modster said of his night. "A couple throws I should have made, a couple reads. I just think it was more of a great team win. We can all improve on this."

Modster did not play in Cal's 35-0 loss to No. 8 Utah on Oct. 26 because of an unspecified injury but was cleared earlier this week. He completed 16 of 24 passes for 230 yards and had a pivotal 26-yard scramble prior to his 52-yard touchdown pass to Makai Polk. Modster also had scoring throws of 9 and 13 yards, then sealed the game with a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. "I felt like he just played free and like himself and left it all out there on the field," Polk said of Modster. Chris Brown Jr. rushed for 95 yards and scored twice to help California (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12) win for the first time since Sept. 21. The Bears outgained the Cougars 196-16 on the ground. The win keeps California on track to become bowl eligible for the third time in three seasons under coach Justin Wilcox. - California/AP College Football

  10/01/19 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

California will be without starting quarterback Chase Garbers indefinitely because of an apparent shoulder injury he suffered in Friday's loss to Arizona State. Garbers was scrambling when he fell on his throwing arm late in the second quarter against the Sun Devils. After being taken to the locker room for examination, Garbers emerged in the second half wearing a splint. Coach Justin Wilcox declined on Monday to say what the nature or severity of Garbers injury is, saying only that it is an upper body injury. “That's kind of all we can say about it,” Wilcox said. “I understand the interest. There's only so much we can say. He'll be back hopefully as fast as humanly possible.”

A redshirt sophomore who split time as a starter in 2018, Garbers was coming off his best game with the Golden Bears after throwing for a career-best 357 yards and four touchdowns in a win at Mississippi on Sept. 21. Garbers led Cal on an early scoring driving against Arizona State and was 9 of 12 for 177 yards and a touchdown before getting hurt. “I thought he was really coming into his own,” Wilcox said. “Even in that game, he finished 9 of 12 and two of (the incompletions) were dropped. So you feel for him. He puts a ton of time in this too. But it's part of it. It'll be next man up.” Devon Modster, a transfer from UCLA who struggled in the second half after replacing Garbers, will start Saturday against at No. 13 Oregon. Modster was 5 of 14 for 23 yards and an interception in the end zone against Arizona State. Afterward, he called his performance terrible. - AP College Football

California quarterback Chase Garbers left the game against Arizona State in the second quarter with an apparent right arm injury. Garbers got hurt when he landed on his throwing arm on a scramble late in the second quarter for the 15th-ranked Golden Bears on Friday night. He was helped off the field, giving high-fives to teammates with his left arm and went straight to the locker room. There was no immediate word on the extent of the injury. Devon Modster came in to replace Garbers and threw an interception in the end zone in the closing seconds of the first half. - AP College Football

The Bears struggled to generate anything in the passing game after Garbers got hurt, which doesn't bode well for the future. Modster finished 5 for 14 for 23 yards and threw an interception in the end zone to deny Cal a chance at a field goal at the end of the first half. Garbers was coming off his best game at Cal, throwing for 357 yards and four TDs in a win last week at Mississippi. - AP College Football

Chase Garbers threw for four touchdowns, but No. 23 California needed a game-saving tackle at the 1-yard line from linebacker Evan Weaver on the game's final play to defeat Mississippi 28-20 on Saturday. Cal (4-0) was in control until the final six minutes, when reserve quarterback John Rhys Plumlee led Ole Miss (2-2) on a late rally to wipe out a 28-13 deficit. Plumlee was stopped by Weaver for no gain on fourth down at the 1-yard line as time expired. Garbers completed 23 of 35 passes for 357 yards, including TDs of 9 and 60 yards to Jordan Duncan and Jake Tonges on the opening two possessions of the third quarter, setting up the late defensive heroics.

The Rebels got strong performances from quarterbacks Matt Corral and Plumlee, who led the final two possessions. Corral had a 1-yard scoring run and was 22-of-41 passing for 266 yards before leaving with a rib injury. The Rebels had 525 yards of total offense but failed on two scoring opportunities with missed field goals. Plumlee went 7 of 7 for 82 yards in the final six minutes. Jerrion Ealy scored on a 15-yard run with 4:29 left to cap Plumlee's first series. The Rebels went 89 yards in 10 plays in the final 2:45, finished by the game-saving stop from the Golden Bears' defense. - California/AP College Football

California and Arizona State moved into the AP Top 25 college football poll to give the Pac-12 six ranked teams, the most for the conference in almost four years. A weekend filled with blowouts left the top half of the AP media poll presented by Regions Bank mostly unchanged. Clemson remains No. 1, with 57 of the 62 first-place votes, as the top nine held their spots Sunday. Alabama was No. 2, receiving five first-place votes, followed by Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Auburn and Florida. The ninth-ranked Gators were the only top-10 team to play a competitive game. The others won by a combined 428-97. Utah, the highest ranked Pac-12 team, moved up to No. 10. The last time the Pac-12 had six ranked teams was Nov. 8, 2015. - AP College Football

  09/14/19 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Chase Garbers passed for one touchdown after using his legs to get California's offense going, Greg Thomas kicked three field goals and the Golden Bears beat North Texas 23-17 on Saturday. Christopher Brown Jr. ran for 47 yards and a touchdown while Cal's defense had six sacks and forced two turnovers. The Bears are 3-0 for the third time in three years under coach Justin Wilcox. Cal won despite being held to three points over the final three quarters. For us it was all about the level of execution and we've just got a long way to go there," Wilcox said. "No two ways about it. Our guys play hard and the effort's really good. Now the level of execution's gotta match that for us to do what we want to do. We're not there yet."

North Texas quarterback Mason Fine completed 21 of 40 attempts for 210 yards and two touchdowns to surpass the 10,000-yard mark for his career but the Mean Green (1-2) fell behind big for the second straight week and couldn't recover. Cal dominated on both sides early in the first-ever matchup between the two schools then held on after North Texas made a late surge. The Mean Green pulled within 23-17 on Fine's 18-yard TD to Jyaire Shorter late in the fourth quarter and got the ball back with less than two minutes remaining but turned it over on downs. Garbers was a big factor for the Bears staying unbeaten, one week after Cal's stunning 20-19 win over then-No. 14 Washington in a game that was delayed by weather for more than 2½ hours. Garbers repeatedly burned the Mean Green with keepers and scrambles while running for a career-high 70 yards on 18 carries despite North Texas frequently stacking the box. - Cal Football
