  12/01/19 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Chase Garbers and California were determined not to rest on their laurels after last week's win over Stanford in The Big Game. The Golden Bears showed no signs of a letdown as they defeated UCLA 28-18 on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Cal (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) was led by Christopher Brown Jr.'s 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns while the defense had a season-high six sacks and held the Bruins to 58 rushing yards. "Many people might have seen this as a trap game coming off the win over Stanford, but I think we came out and imposed our will on them. We had that mindset during practice all week," said Garbers, who completed 17 of 29 passes for 230 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Brown - who had his second 100-yard game of the season — scored both of his touchdowns in the second half as the Golden Bears completed the regular season with wins in three of their last four. Cal led 14-10 at halftime before they went up by two scores with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter on Brown's 1-yard run up the middle. After UCLA responded with Joshua Kelley's 1-yard TD run and Dorian Thompson-Robinson's pass to Delon Hurt for the 2-point conversion, Brown got another huge hole and went 11 yards to give the Bears a 28-18 advantage 7 seconds into the fourth quarter. - California/AP College Football

He was a second-team midseason All-American selection by Athlon Sports and The Athletic and Davis is on the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, given annually to the nation's most versatile player. Davis walked on the Cal track team and after several unsuccessful attempts to contact the football staff, joined the team in the spring of 2016. He was named first-team All-Pac 12 by the Associated Press, Athlon Sports and Pro Football Focus in 2018, recording 56 tackles and an interception with an 89-yard kick return.   11/23/19 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

It took nearly a decade, a heads-up play by oft-injured California quarterback Chase Garbers and one final stand by the Golden Bears defense to make it happen. The Axe is headed back to Berkeley. Garbers scored on a 16-yard scramble with 1:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, lifting California to a 24-20 win over Stanford in the 122nd annual Big Game on Saturday. "We finally got it back," Garbers said of The Axe, which has been in Stanford's possession since 2009. Garbers, who was knocked out of last week's loss to USC, passed for 285 yards and a touchdown and ran for 72 yards on 13 carries. His final run came after he overthrew Nikko Remigio in the end zone and helped the Golden Bears (6-5, 3-5 Pac-12) end a nine-game losing streak to their San Francisco bay rivals. "I was just excited I had a rushing touchdown" Garbers said.

Garbers wasn't even cleared to play against Stanford until late Thursday evening. He had suffered an upper body injury a week earlier against USC and was held out of all contact drills in the days leading up to the Big Game. "Gutsy, tough," Bears coach Justin Wilcox said of his quarterback. "To make the throws that he made on the last drive and then the scramble for the touchdown, those are huge plays. I think people are going to be talking about that drive for a while." California fans stormed the field after the game, forming a blue-and-yellow sea on the floor of Stanford Stadium. More importantly for Wilcox's team, California became bowl eligible heading into the season finale against UCLA next week. - California/AP College Football

  11/10/19 - Devon ModsterrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Devon Modster wasn't too impressed with the best game of his career. That it helped stop California's four-game losing streak was much more important to the Golden Bears quarterback. Modster passed for a career-high three touchdowns and rushed for a fourth in his first game back from injury, California's defense made a pivotal stop late in the fourth quarter, and the Golden Bears beat the Cougars 33-20 on Saturday night to end a four-game losing streak. "I would say it was average," Modster said of his night. "A couple throws I should have made, a couple reads. I just think it was more of a great team win. We can all improve on this."

Modster did not play in Cal's 35-0 loss to No. 8 Utah on Oct. 26 because of an unspecified injury but was cleared earlier this week. He completed 16 of 24 passes for 230 yards and had a pivotal 26-yard scramble prior to his 52-yard touchdown pass to Makai Polk. Modster also had scoring throws of 9 and 13 yards, then sealed the game with a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. "I felt like he just played free and like himself and left it all out there on the field," Polk said of Modster. Chris Brown Jr. rushed for 95 yards and scored twice to help California (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12) win for the first time since Sept. 21. The Bears outgained the Cougars 196-16 on the ground. The win keeps California on track to become bowl eligible for the third time in three seasons under coach Justin Wilcox. - California/AP College Football

Evan Weaver has keyed California's stingy defense with his disruptive play. The linebacker leads the Pac-12 with 105 tackles, which include 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He is coming off a 21-tackle performance against Oregon State. Weaver is the only FBS player to finish with at least 18 tackles in three games this season.   10/01/19 - Chase GarbersrSr/2022, California, 6-2, 215 (DS#17 QB) + More +

California will be without starting quarterback Chase Garbers indefinitely because of an apparent shoulder injury he suffered in Friday's loss to Arizona State. Garbers was scrambling when he fell on his throwing arm late in the second quarter against the Sun Devils. After being taken to the locker room for examination, Garbers emerged in the second half wearing a splint. Coach Justin Wilcox declined on Monday to say what the nature or severity of Garbers injury is, saying only that it is an upper body injury. “That's kind of all we can say about it,” Wilcox said. “I understand the interest. There's only so much we can say. He'll be back hopefully as fast as humanly possible.”

A redshirt sophomore who split time as a starter in 2018, Garbers was coming off his best game with the Golden Bears after throwing for a career-best 357 yards and four touchdowns in a win at Mississippi on Sept. 21. Garbers led Cal on an early scoring driving against Arizona State and was 9 of 12 for 177 yards and a touchdown before getting hurt. “I thought he was really coming into his own,” Wilcox said. “Even in that game, he finished 9 of 12 and two of (the incompletions) were dropped. So you feel for him. He puts a ton of time in this too. But it's part of it. It'll be next man up.” Devon Modster, a transfer from UCLA who struggled in the second half after replacing Garbers, will start Saturday against at No. 13 Oregon. Modster was 5 of 14 for 23 yards and an interception in the end zone against Arizona State. Afterward, he called his performance terrible. - AP College Football

California quarterback Chase Garbers left the game against Arizona State in the second quarter with an apparent right arm injury. Garbers got hurt when he landed on his throwing arm on a scramble late in the second quarter for the 15th-ranked Golden Bears on Friday night. He was helped off the field, giving high-fives to teammates with his left arm and went straight to the locker room. There was no immediate word on the extent of the injury. Devon Modster came in to replace Garbers and threw an interception in the end zone in the closing seconds of the first half. - AP College Football

The Bears struggled to generate anything in the passing game after Garbers got hurt, which doesn't bode well for the future. Modster finished 5 for 14 for 23 yards and threw an interception in the end zone to deny Cal a chance at a field goal at the end of the first half. Garbers was coming off his best game at Cal, throwing for 357 yards and four TDs in a win last week at Mississippi. - AP College Football
