2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Darren Anders, Bowling Green, Senior LB,...Anders was one of three players in all of FBS over the last two seasons to rank in the top-15 nationally in tackles and is the only one who returns to CFB in 2022. Anders has been named a preseason first-team All-MAC honoree by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. Anders is the first Falcon since Austin Valdez in 2016 to be named to the Bednarik Watch List.   For the first time in his IU tenure, Allen opens preseason without Peyton Ramsey or Michael Penix in his quarterback room. Ramsey has been gone for two years now, of course, but between them, he and Penix accounted for the bulk of positive production from the most important position on Allen's team between 2017-21. Now, Allen turns to a familiar face, Jack Tuttle, and a new one, Connor Bazelak, a transfer from Missouri.

Tuttle has the edge in terms of time in an Indiana uniform, but Bazelak brings impressive credentials of his own, having thrown for 2,548 yards and 16 touchdowns last season at Missouri. He has more than 5,000 career passing yards in college. With Donaven McCulley moved to receiver, and no other quarterback on roster having taken a collegiate snap, it's not surprising Allen has publicly declared Tuttle and Bazelak the frontrunners to be his starting QB for IU's Sept. 2 opener against Illinois. But somebody's got to win the job. There will be no more watched position battle in camp. - Indianapolis Star/News

  08/02/22 - Karl BrooksrSr/2023, Bowling Green, 6-3, 296 (DS#10 DT) + More +

Karl Brooks has been a staple on Bowling Green State University's defensive line since his true freshman season. Brooks, now a senior captain, appeared in all 12 games in the 2018 season. He established himself as a reliable contributor, starting eight times that season, including the final five. He has only improved since, and he appears primed for a big final season. "My goal is just to help my teammates," Brooks said on Tuesday at the Mid-American Conference football media day. "Be the best teammate that I can, put BG on the map, win of course. And personally, whatever's out there for me comes. My goal is to put my team first right now." Coach Scot Loeffler during the spring football game at Bowling Green State University's Doyt Perry Stadium in Bowling Green on April 23.

Last fall, Brooks finished the regular season with 7 1/2 sacks, which ranked fifth in the Mid-American Conference. He recorded five tackles and a sack against Tennessee in the 2021 season opener. "If you would have told me 2 1/2 years ago if he'd ever be a captain, I would've said no way," Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler said after a game last season. "He's bought in." The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder finished the season with 42 tackles, including 12 1/2 for loss. - Toledo Blade

  07/01/22 - Jordan OladokunrSr/2025, Bowling Green, 5-11, 188 (DS#33 CB) + More +

Persistence on the recruiting trail can sometimes unearth diamonds in the rough. For Group of Five football programs like Bowling Green State University, the transfer portal has become a helpful tool to help boost depth at the top of rotations. Coach Scot Loeffler has utilized the portal for depth options in previous years, but over this offseason, he has pulled in Day 1 starters to help with a young nucleus. He might have killed two birds with one stone in sophomore defensive back Jordan Oladokun. "We've always thought he was a really good football player," Loeffler said. "He's got great speed, great hands, athletic. The most impressive thing besides his character are his mom and dad. His mom and dad are phenomenal. They get it. They know it's not going to be easy, and I think from their experience, they realized our staff was sincere, legit, and wanted to really mold Jordan into the best possible player and person he could possibly be."

Oladokun was a three-star recruit out of Gaither High School in Tampa, where he was a four-time all-state selection in football and an all-state selection in baseball. He committed to Iowa among 26 offers - 18 from Power Five programs and one from BGSU - but decommitted in October, 2020, amid racial discrimination allegations against coach Kirk Ferentz and the program. As a result, Oladokun attended Football Championship Subdivision program Samford and played six games in the 2021 season before sustaining a torn labrum. He entered the transfer portal, and eventually found a home with BGSU, Loeffler, and defensive coordinator Eric Lewis. - Toledo Blade

The Bowling Green State University football program has added five additional transfers, according to head football coach Scot Loeffler. Offensive tackle Cedric Dunbar II (Jackson State), offensive guard Delonus Kabir (Florida A&M), wide receiver CJ Lewis (Boston College), defensive lineman Kitione Tau (Laney CC) and offensive tackle Kameron Stewart (Coastal Carolina) have signed letters of acceptance to BGSU. All five are on campus and working out with the team.

Dunbar II (Natchez, Mississippi) will have two seasons of eligibility after spending three years at Jackson State, two of which playing for head coach Deion Sanders. He appeared in 26 career games with 24 career starts. In 2021 Dunbar II started all 12 games in which he appeared, helping Jackson State go 11-2 and win the SWAC championship. JSU finished the season ranked No. 19 in the FCS coaches poll and No. 22 by STATS. - Sentinel Tribune

Almost a year before the NCAA finally voted to allow athletes to be able to profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL) rights, Indiana struck an agreement with Opendorse, a social media marketing company, to prepare its athletes for what they would be dealing with when they finally had the ability to market themselves. It was an early sign of how IU would approach NIL. It would stay inside the lines and avoid inducements or pay-for-play, but look for every opportunity to make it easier for its athletes to navigate the NIL landscape and help guide them to opportunities when allowed and appropriate. Last week's announcement that IU had come to a "total school solution agreement" with Campus Ink marks a continuation in that approach.

Campus Ink is an apparel company that works in officially-licensed college gear. It created the NIL store so there would be a central online hub for athletes to be able to partner with designers to make apparel and be able to use licensed marks of their school and athletic department. Illinois and several other schools had already come to agreements with Campus Ink before Indiana became interested, and it was only then that the athletic department realized one of IU's most famous and wealthiest alums, Mark Cuban, happened to be one of Campus Ink's investors. "We are always looking to be on the forefront of NIL issues, this is the most basic NIL opportunity, and Campus Ink is an innovative leader in this area," IU senior associate athletic director and spokesman Jeremy Gray told the Herald-Times via email. " Obviously, (Cuban's) involvement is a bonus!" "I'm really excited that the leading NIL company, Campus Ink, and the best university on the planet, my alma mater, Indiana University, are working together," Cuban said in the statement. "The sky is the limit!" - Herald Bulletin

The Hoosiers return two quarterbacks who started games last year in fifth-year senior Jack Tuttle and sophomore Donaven McCulley, and both are very much in the mix to win the starting job. However, Allen wanted more depth at the position than he had in 2021 and he has it. Bazelak comes to Indiana after three years at Missouri with far more passing production than anyone else in the room, throwing for 5,050 yards and 23 touchdowns. which puts him well beyond Tuttle's 819 passing yards and four touchdowns in a career spent almost entirely as a backup to this point.

Bazelak certainly doesn't have a lock on the starting job, but coaches do feel he has the arm strength to make all the throws. He's working on familiarity with Bell's offense and developing rapport with receivers he's never played with before, and honing his accuracy. "Just being able to be more comfortable with his teammates," Allen said when asked about Bazelak's development this spring. "...To be able to throw the ball accurately, and throw it with decisiveness." - Indianapolis Star/News
